Here is part five of Every Day Life! It's a teensy bit longer than the others...so I still hope that you enjoy it!
Title: Dishes
Pairing: Van/Jake
Rating: G
Disclaimer: I do not own Van and Jake, or the characters of Luke and Noah. This is complete fabrication.
Van looked up at the sound of a door opening, and watched as Jake entered his apartment.
“Hey you,” Jake greeted, setting the grocery bags down and removing his coat.
“Hey,” Van responded smiling, returning his attention back to the book in front of him.
“I brought the cereal,” Jake announced, walking into Van’s kitchen.
“Good, I’m starving!” Van called from the other room.
Jake removed the boxes of Fruit Loops and Golden Grahams from the bag. He chuckled at the thought of him and Van, two grown men, having cereal for dinner. But when he called Van about their dinner plans, Van made a joke about “Just having cereal!” and seemed pretty insistent about it, so Jake agreed.
Jake opened up the cupboard to collect two bowls for their cereal, but was surprised to find it almost completely bare. Only a few cups and mugs remained…no plates or bowls. Jake glanced over at Van’s sink to see that it was overflowing with dirty dishes. He let out a frustrated sigh.
“Uhh…Van,” Jake called, moving to stand in the doorway between the kitchen and the living room so he could look at his friend. Van looked up from his book and met Jake’s eyes with a questioning gaze. “When was the last time you did your dishes?”
“Umm…” Van’s expression went from confused to embarrassed the moment that Jake was done speaking. “I’m not sure.”
“Are you serious?” Jake asked, trying to hold back his laughter. “Were you not aware that you have no clean dishes and your sink is practically overflowing with the entire contents of your cupboards?”
“Uhh…I guess not.”
“You guess?” Jake exclaimed, laughter flowing freely now. “How do you live without clean dishes?”
“Jake! I’ve been spending most of my time at your place lately…I haven’t been paying attention to my dishes!” Van defended.
“Well, you are now,” Jake said, throwing a dish towel at the blonde. “Get up and help me so we can eat.”
Van mumbled something under his breath and reluctantly got up from the couch to follow Jake into the kitchen. He already had the water running and suds were slowly forming on top of the soapy water. Jake was busy moving the dishes from the sink to the counter.
“Here,” Jake said, taking the towel from Van and in turn, handing him a clean rag. “You wash, I’ll dry.”
Van glared at him in protest, but realized that these were his dishes, and it wouldn’t be fair to Jake to make him do them. He walked toward the sink, pulled up his sleeves, and began to wash the dishes. When he was done washing one, he would hand it to Jake, who would dry it and put it away in its proper place. It was a pretty efficient system.
About halfway through, Van started to scrub out a sauce pan, and Jake paused to watch him while he waited until he was done to dry it off. Van started to scrub violently, sloshing water all over the sides of the sink, onto the counters, and onto the floor.
“Whoa, Hansis…you are making a flood in here!” Jake exclaimed, motioning toward the water, and throwing him a towel to wipe it up.
Van stopped his movements and caught the towel, before looking over at the counter and the floor.
“Eh, I can clean it up later. It doesn’t matter,” he replied, throwing the towel back at Jake and turning back to the sauce pan. He suddenly stopped and looked at Jake, both of them realizing what just happened.
“Wow…did we just act out a Luke and Noah scene in real life?” Van laughed. Jake joined in the laughter, before moving closer to Van.
“I think we did,” he replied. “However, I do recall Luke and Noah being shirtless and soaking wet…”
“Oh…don’t you even think about it Silberm–“ but it was too late. Jake had already splashed some water from the sink onto Van’s front, soaking his black long sleeve tee. Jake laughed at Van’s appalled gaze, and then immediately moved away from Van as his friend moved to retaliate. Van grabbed his wet cloth and snapped it at Jake, barely getting him wet. He immediately submerged the rag in the soapy water, and quickly began to go after Jake again. But in his haste, he forgot about the water on the floor, and found himself slipping on the tile. He fell into a pair of strong arms, which he easily recognized to be Jake’s. He lifted up his head and saw that his face was just inches from the brunet’s. He gazed into Jake’s soft blue eyes, and smiled.
“OK…this is getting ridiculous,” his warm breath from his laughter tickled Jake’s face.
“Yeah, it is,” Jake agreed. “But…again I don’t recall Luke and Noah being able to do this…” Jake leaned down and pressed his lips to Van’s. As their lips moved, their hands followed…Van’s rising to cup Jake’s face, and Jake’s running down the soft, wet material of Van’s shirt. A sudden grumbling broke them from their embrace.
“Sorry,” Van said sheepishly. “I’m still starving.”
“Well, then,” Jake chuckled, moving away from Van’s arms. “Let’s finish these up so we can finally eat our cereal.”
Both boys went back to their respective duties at the sink to finish of the last of Van’s dishes. When the last dish was dried and put away, they grabbed a towel and wiped up the excess water from the counter and the floor. Van then left to change his soaked shirt while Jake got out two bowls and spoons for their cereal. He then turned around and opened Van’s refrigerator.
“You have got to be kidding me…” Jake sighed and shut the door. “Van!”
“Yeah?” Van answered, coming to the doorway to the kitchen and pulling a navy blue vintage shirt over his head. “What’s up?”
“You don’t have any milk!”
Van just looked at his friend, and then let out a guilty laugh.
“Oh…um…oops!”
