Noah paces back and forth in the hallway of the hospital. He wonders to himself how this happened. How things got so out of hand. They were just supposed to talk to Casey and get his phone back. Now he is in the hospital waiting to hear if his unborn child is going to live.
Maddie had regained consciousness once the ambulance got there, but she was still really upset about the whole confrontation with Casey. She was hysterically yelling at him to leave her alone and telling Noah not to tell Casey which hospital they were going to. Noah wanted to ride in the ambulance with his wife, but the paramedics said that Noah was upsetting her more and he should drive himself to the hospital. Maddie got really pissed at that. If she had the energy she probably would have punched the guy who told Noah to leave her alone. As she was being rolled away she kept asking Noah if he was going to be at the hospital and begging him not to leave her alone.
Noah couldn’t even look at Casey after they took Maddie away. He just walked to his car and drove away. It’s a good thing too, because he probably would have gotten in a fist fight with the guy in the middle of the park.
On his way to the hospital Noah called Luke and asked him to bring Lucy to the hospital to see her mom. He wasn’t sure if Maddie would want Lucy to see her in a hospital bed, but he also knew that even if she was upset about Noah asking Luke to bring their daughter, she would still be really happy to see her.
Finally the doctor exits Maddie’s room and walks up to Noah.
“Are you Mr. Mayer?”
“Yes, I am, sir.”
“I’m Doctor Glover and I’m treating your wife.”
“Is she okay? Is the baby okay?”
“Your wife is fine. She is a severely dehydrated so we have her on an IV and we are giving her fluids.”
“What about the baby?”
“The heart beat is still strong and from what I can tell your baby is going to be fine.”
“Oh thank God.”
“But your wife really needs to take care of herself since she is still in the early stages of pregnancy. She needs to be sure to eat right and get lots of fluids. She mentioned you to have a four-year-old, so it might be hard for her to remember to do these things on her own.”
“I’ll try to get better about helping her out with those things,” Noah promises.
“Also she seems to be exhibiting some symptoms of stress. Has there been anything going on lately that would cause stress?”
“Yes. We have been having some-- Well there’s been some-- Maddie and I--”
“You don’t have to explain, Mr. Mayer, but I would suggest she start to exercise more. It will be good in preparation for the baby and it can help relieve stress.”
“Can I go see her now?”
“Yes, of course. We will only be keeping her until her fluids are normal again. We also want to get her something to eat. It should only take a couple of hours.”
“Thank you, Dr. Glover.”
“Not a problem. I’ll be in to check on her in an hour or so.”
Noah walks over to the door of Maddie’s room and takes a deep breath. Maddie was still so upset when they left the park he isn’t sure what her mood will be when he opens the door. He cracks it just a little and pokes his head inside. Maddie is lying on her side facing away from the door. He tiptoes in the room and softly closes the door behind him. He walks around the bed and finds Maddie staring out the window of the hospital room.
“Hey, you,” she says quietly.
“I thought you were sleeping,” Noah replies.
“No. Just thinking.”
“Oh. About what?”
“Casey and Lucy. I just don’t know what to do. I thought my plan was foolproof, I thought he would never know. Now it’s out there. I just don’t know what the hell I’m going to do.”
“Hey Maddie, don’t worry about that right now. Right now we have to focus on getting you healthy so you can get out of here.”
“I’m fine. I just got a little upset and fainted. I don’t know why they won’t just let me leave. Lucy is probably wondering where we are.”
“You’re not fine. The doctor says you are dehydrated and stressed out.”
“Well there’s a shock.”
“Maddie I--”
“Noah, I didn’t mean it like that. I don’t blame you for any of this. We’ve had a rough couple of days, but you’ve been there for me. You’re always there for me. I’ve made this mess, and now I have to live with it. I just never thought it would come back to bite me this hard.”
“Maddie we’re going to get through this. Somehow everything is going to be fine. I promise.”
“Noah, you can’t make a promise like that.”
“Yes. I can. I just have a feeling it will all work out.”
“If you say so.”
“I say so.” Noah bends down places a kiss on Maddie’s forehead.
“Noah,” she whispers.
“Yes, Maddie.”
“I want you to know that I’m happy Luke came back to you. I really am. He seems like a great guy. Lucy already loves him and I know one day I will too.”
“Maddie, that means the world to me.”
“When I look at Luke I see that he has so much love to give. He has love for you and all the things that are important to you. I’m not going to pretend like it’s easy having him swoop in and take you away from me, but I can tell how much he loves you and he deserves your love in return.”
“I appreciate you saying that, Maddie. Now you get some rest. I’m going to make a phone call and I’ll be right back, okay?”
“Call Lucy and tell her we will be home soon.”
“I will.”
Noah steps out of the room and starts to take out his cell phone. But before he can dial Luke’s number he sees Luke and Lucy walking up the hall towards him. Lucy is holding a doll under her arm and Luke is holding her hand. They are having an intense conversation so neither one of them sees Noah standing there. He can’t hear what they are saying, but Lucy has a big smile on her face and Luke is laughing. They stop walking for a moment and Luke picks up Lucy. Once in his arms she grabs Luke’s face and plants a kiss on his cheek. Noah is overwhelmed with emotion. Lucy is treating Luke exactly the way he had hoped she would, like family.
They spot Noah at the end of the hall and Luke walks briskly to get to him.
“Noah, how’s she doing?”
“She’s fine. She is just resting.”
“Good.”
“Daddy, can I go see Mommy?”
“Sure, Princess. I’ll take you to her now. But Mommy isn’t feeling well. So you have to be super gentle with her, okay?”
Lucy nods her head in agreement. Noah takes Lucy from Luke’s arms and walks into Maddie’s room. Maddie is facing the door this time and her face lights up when she sees Lucy in his arms.
“Hi, Mommy,” Lucy says quietly.
“Hey baby girl. What are you doing here?”
“Luke brought me. I wanted to see you.”
Noah walks over to the bed and lays Lucy beside her mom. Maddie lifts the covers up so Lucy can slip under them and lie beside her.
“Mommy, do you have a boo boo?”
“No, baby. Mommy is fine. I just have to rest here for a little bit. Do you want to rest with me?”
“Yes,” Lucy says cheerily.
“Okay. I’ll even let you pick out what we watch on TV,” Maddie says reaching for the remote.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Noah says before he exits the room.
Luke is standing in the hallway waiting for Noah.
“Thanks for bringing Lucy down here so quickly.”
“Not a problem.”
“I guess she’ll be disappointed we never did get her pancakes.”
“No she won’t. We made some together after I got off the phone with you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, she didn’t want to wait and I happen to be an excellent pancake maker.”
“I'll remember that.” Noah takes Luke into his arms and kisses him on the lips.
“Maybe we should take this outside,” Luke says, “I mean Maddie and Lucy are right in there.”
“Yeah okay. I said I would give them some time to themselves. So we can just go for a walk outside or something.”
“Sounds good to me.”
They take the elevator down to the first floor and make their way to the little park that is right bedside the hospital. They walk the grounds hand in hand.
“I like this,” Luke says.
“What?” Noah asks.
“Being in public with you. Not having to hide in your trailer or my apartment. I like being able to show the world who I love.”
“We are back to where we were in college.”
“No, Noah. We are so far away from where we were then. At least I am.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I was selfish and stubborn back then. I wanted you to do things when I wanted them done, not in your own time. I’m sorry for that and I will never do it again.”
“I know that, Luke.”
“I want you to take as much time as you need when it comes to the transition from living with Maddie and Lucy to moving in with me. Even if it means we can’t be together until after the baby is born.”
“Thank you, Luke. You don’t know how much that means to me. I want to be with you so much, but I just can’t leave my girls right now.”
“I understand believe me.”
They take a seat on a bench in the middle of the rose garden. They sit for what seems like forever. They talk about their future and their past. Sometimes they lean in and kiss. Sometimes they just gaze at each other or the flowers. For a little while Noah feels like everything is right with the world again. They decide to get back to Maddie and Lucy since it seems like they have been gone for awhile.
Noah and Luke return to Maddie’s room to find that she is dressed to go home.
“There you two are. I was afraid I had lost you forever.”
“Ready to go home?” Noah asks.
“Yes, please,” she answers.
“Well I guess I’ll be going then,” Luke says, “ Noah, I’ll call you tomorrow. Maddie, feel better. Goodbye, Lucy Goosey.” He turns to walk out the door, but Lucy’s voice stops him.
“No, Luke, you have to come home with us. Daddy promised.”
Luke turns back around to address Lucy.
" I want to, but you need to go home and be with your mom and dad. We spent the whole day together. It’s time for them to spend some time with you.”
“But Daddy said you would all tuck me in.”
“That’s true,” Noah chimes in, “I did say that.”
“Well a promise is a promise,” Maddie says with a smile, “I guess you’re coming with us.”
Luke doesn’t really feel like he’s in a position to protest so he just nods his head in agreement. They all head out of the room and down to the parking lot. Maddie is holding Lucy in her arms, while Lucy is holding her doll in her arms. Noah smiles to himself and reaches out to hold Luke’s hand. Luke is hesitant at first. He looks over at Lucy and Maddie and then back at Noah. Noah just smiles and grabs Luke’s hand.
“Best friends hold hands, remember?”
Luke chuckles remembering the picture that Lucy drew for him. It has been hanging on the refrigerator door since Friday evening when she gave it to him. Noah feels like they all make one big happy family. An untraditional one, yes. But it is certainly big and filled with happiness and love.
They walk through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital and it’s like they all hit a brick wall. The entire group stops dead in its tracks. Lucy and Luke look confused, while Maddie and Noah look scared.
Casey is standing outside the doors of the hospital with an older man who is wearing a business suit.
“What’s this about?” Maddie demands.
“I waited for you to come out because I knew you wouldn’t want me to bug you while you were in the hospital,” Casey explains, “and I didn’t want to show up at your house again. I didn’t think that would be appropriate.”
“And you think this is, Casey?” she asks angrily.
“I just wanted to finish our conversation. I didn’t want to upset you. I thought it would just be you and Noah here. I didn’t know she was going to be with you,” he says pointing to Lucy.
“Mommy, who’s that man?” Lucy asks curiously.
“I’m your mommy’s friend,” Casey says.
“No you’re not,” Maddie spits back. She turns to Lucy. “He’s nobody, sweetie.”
“Maddie, this is important,” Casey continues.
“I don’t care. We are leaving. Don’t contact me again. I will get a restraining order if I have to.”
“It’s not that simple, Maddie. That’s why I brought him,” he says pointing to the man standing beside him.
“Well I’m sure your father knows that I can get a restraining order against you, Casey.”
“He also knows my paternal rights.”
Noah can see Maddie is getting upset. She looks the way she did in the park right before she fainted, except she’s not crying this time. Noah knows she would be crying if she didn’t have Lucy in her arms. Maddie hates to cry in front of their little girl.
“Look, Casey,” Noah interjects, “I think you’ve upset Maddie enough for one day. You should leave. Call me in the morning and we can talk about whatever you want. But you talk to me, not her. All right?”
“No, Noah,” Maddie says, “I’ll talk to him now.”
“What?” both Noah and Casey ask at the same time.
“You heard me. I’ll talk now. We may as well get it over with. You and Luke take her home. Just leave the car keys with me. You guys can take Luke’s car. ”
“Maddie, are you sure?” Noah asks.
“Yes, I’m sure. Luke’s car has Lucy’s car seat in it anyways.”
“No, Maddie. I mean are you sure you want to do this right now? You were just released from the hospital.”
“I’m sure. There’s no time like the present, right?”
