Chapter 2
When they got back in the house, Noah called for the cook to start supper for two. “Is steak ok with you Luke?”
“I can’t stay for dinner…I have to get back to my farm. I have a herd of horses that need my attention and a couple of mares that are expecting any time.” “I also have a deadline for the draft of my next book, so I need to get home.” “Sorry!” “If we could complete the sale now, I can make the arrangements to ship the horse and catch the next flight home.”
“Luke, I told you that we don’t do things quick here.” “I like to get to know who will be taking my horses.” “I told you that outside.” “Did you think I was kidding?”
“No, I didn’t think that, but I thought you understood that we need to do this faster than what you are used to because I am on a time schedule and I need to go home.” I need to get out of your presence soon before I make a complete fool of myself and attack you. Luke was thinking as he was sitting down to sign the papers of the sale. God, how much more do I have to endure? He is making me a bumbling idiot.
“Luke, I am sure that you can make some calls and have someone take care of things back at your…uh farm is it?” “I really would like for you to stay. I was going to set up the guest room for you to stay for a few days. I want you to get to know your horse that you are paying so much money for. He is worth staying for I assure you.”
“I am sure that you are.” Luke thought. “I will see what I can do.”
“Good, Steak okay?”
“Yes that is fine.” Luke got on the phone and called his farm hand Derek. He gave him the instructions and told him to call if the mares went into labor. Luke had built himself a really nice home on the other side of Snyder Pond and started raising horses. His property was still part of his Grandmother’s farm, which she had left him upon her death. The house was being used by his farm hand, because it was closer to the stables than Luke’s house was. Derek told Luke that he would call if he needed him to come home. He was a little curious as to why Luke felt the need to call because he knew that he would be handling things at home. Derek wondered what this was really about. Oh, well he is the boss, I am sure he will fill me in when he gets back.” Derek really likes Luke but he has not opened up to him about his feelings. Luke has always been so great to him that he doesn’t want to spoil their friendship by coming out to him.
Supper went without incident and the two men retired to the study. They discussed the horse Shadow and what he would do for Luke as a stud. Everyone was clamoring to buy this horse for stud service because his lineage was the who’s who in the racing circles. They also talked about how Luke would get the horse home. The one thing they didn’t discuss was the elephant that was in the room. Luke was very nervous being around Noah and it was really putting a strain on him.
Noah started to come across the room toward Luke. He came right up to him and stopped. He was close enough that Luke could feel his breath on his cheek. “Luke, why are you so anxious to get away from me?” “Why do I make you so nervous?”
“I think you know the answer to that.” “Don’t you?” “You kept me here just to see how I would react to you being this close…right?”
Noah didn’t say anything. He just moved one step closer and pulled Luke into his arms. Before Luke could even react, Noah’s lips were on his and making him respond to him. Luke had never felt a kiss like this one. It shook him all the way to his toes. Noah pulled away, leaving Luke feeling abandoned. He looked at Luke and told him, “I am so sorry for that. I never should have taken these liberties with you. We just met.” “I will have my man servant show you to your room.” “Goodnight Luke, We will sign all the papers in the morning and you can catch your flight home.” Noah excused himself and left the study.
Luke just stood there in the same place that Noah had just kissed him in. The servant came in and told him to follow him. Luke went with him and when he got to his room, Luke just sat on the bed wondering what had just happened. Why would Noah do this to me? What kind of motive would he have to treat me like this? I don’t even know him.
Luke did not sleep very well. At one point, he thought that he heard footsteps outside of his bedroom door but no one knocked or came in. Somehow he knew it was Noah but obviously he decided against coming near Luke again.
Luke came down to breakfast and Noah was waiting for him. “I have the papers here for you and I to sign and then my driver will take you to the airport. We will ship Shadow to you before the weeks end.” Noah was being very standoffish and cool. No smiles or any sign of the man last night that practically begged him to stay the night.
Luke signed the papers and went up to get his suitcase. He did not see Noah again before he left the ranch. All the way home on the plane, Luke was trying to figure out what had happened. What a strange man this Noah Mayer was. “Oh well, I will have no reason to see him again so get over it Luke.” He said to himself.
