Noah dropped his forehead to Luke’s shoulder as they sat alone at the kitchen table.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat again!” He groaned.
Luke just laughed and squeezed Noah’s hand on the table where it was intertwined with his own.
“I told you Grandma was cooking up a feast for your ‘Welcome Home’ dinner. She pulled out all the stops.”
“And it was all too good. I couldn’t stop eating! And then she brought out the pies for dessert and I had to try some of each…”
He groaned again, swiveling his head to look up at Luke.
“Ugh. So full.”
“And so tired,” Luke commented, noticing how Noah’s eyes were half closed already.
After his boyfriend’s return that afternoon, the family had gotten together at the farm to celebrate his homecoming. The girls had told him all of their news and Ethan had shown Noah his couple of scrapes that were still healing from his ordeal. Luke’s eyes had misted at the fierce hug that Noah had given Ethan, his relief in seeing the little boy was alright for himself almost emanating off him in waves.
Noah hadn’t had time to change or shower since getting back from the airport and Luke knew that the jetlag must be hitting Noah’s system full force by now but he didn’t want to give up any of this private time they had together. His parents had scooped up the girls and Ethan soon after supper was over to take them home to bed for school the next day. Grandma Emma had headed to a friend’s house for a weekly card game and Alison and Aaron had disappeared off to… somewhere. That left he and Noah alone, together, in the kitchen of a big empty farmhouse.
And Noah’s yawn was so big that it almost cracked his jaw.
He smiled sheepishly. “Sorry Luke. I swear it’s not you. There’s so much I want to tell you and pictures I want to show you but –,” he broke off for another yawn, “I don’t think I can keep my eyes open.”
Luke gave him a quick hug and a brief kiss before popping out of his seat. Noah seemed to waver for a moment without his headrest. Luke grabbed his arms and pulled him upright, steering him towards the living room.
“You lie down on the couch and have a rest while I finish cleaning up. You can tell me all about your trip later.”
Noah simply nodded, yawning again as he all but fell onto the large couch.
Luke smiled indulgently as he grabbed one of Grandma Emma’s hand-knit blankets to pull over his boyfriend. As Noah snuggled into one of the throw pillows, he smiled sleepily up at Luke.
“Love you.” He muttered, his eyes falling shut.
“Love you too.” Luke said kneeling in front of him. He kissed Noah’s forehead and took one last, long glance at his face before reluctantly heading back into the kitchen.
Luke wasn’t worried. They had plenty of time.
