Noah bites his lip and looks up at Luke who is staring at him intently from across the room. After the second ring, Maddie picks up.
“Hey you. I feel like you never answer my calls anymore. You’re not avoiding me are you?”
“Don’t be silly.” Noah says, “ Didn’t Reg tell you I had a lunch meeting?”
Luke rolls his eyes and walks out of the trailer door.
“ He did but this is important. What time are you coming home for dinner tonight?”
“Actually I have a dinner meeting tonight so I won’t be home until later.”
“No Noah. You missed dinner last night too. Besides I have a surprise for you.”
Noah sighs loudly and rubs his temple with his pointer finger. He switches the phone from one ear to the other before he answers.
“I uh, I have a dinner meeting with Luke Snyder. He wants to talk to me about a script he’s writing. I’m considering directing it.”
“Luke Snyder. Your roommate from college? I thought you two didn‘t speak anymore?”
“We don’t. I mean we didn’t. Well um, he contacted me about a month ago about this script and this is the only time that will work for both of us so I really need to do it tonight.”
Maddie is silent on the other line for a few moments. Noah thinks to himself that it was a huge mistake even mentioning Luke’s name to Maddie. She knows that he and Luke were close all through college; although she thinks they were just best friends. She knows they had a big falling out and they haven’t spoken in 5 years. So it must come as a complete shock for her to hear Noah mentioning his name so casually.
“Maddie you still there?” Noah asks, fearing the line went dead.
“Yeah I’m still here. I’m just thinking.”
“Thinking what exactly.”
“Why don’t you bring Luke with you to dinner tonight? I can give you your surprise and then you two can go out after to talk business?”
Noah throws his head on the back of the couch and runs his fingers through his hair. This just went from bad to worse in such a short time he can’t wrap his brain around it.
“ I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Why not?” she insists, “ I’ve never met him. I know you two were close and I think its great you are reconnecting. Just ask him. If he doesn’t want to come, then you can meet with him after dinner.”
“Maddie I-”
“Well if I can’t persuade you, I know someone who can.”
“Please don’t put Lucy on the phone.” But it was too late Noah could hear her passing the phone and his stomach begin to turn.
“Hi Daddy.”
“Hey princess. How was preschool today?”
“Good. Daddy please come home for dinner.”
“Princess I really want to but I…” his voice trails off.
Noah can hear Maddie in the background telling Lucy what to say. In his head he curses at Maddie for using their four-year-old daughter to convince him to come home. This was all getting to be too much for him. He can’t choose between his family and Luke. He knows it has to stop, but he can’t live with out either one.
“And bring your friend Luke too. Who’s Luke?”
Before Noah can answer he hears Maddie taking the phone back and telling Lucy to go play in her room.
“So you coming or what?”
“Yeah I’m coming. Just let me talk to Luke.”
