The young man named Noah looked up and down the deserted street and then back to the blond. “Doesn't look that way to me.”
Luke's honey eyes narrowed, although Noah hadn't seen his expression change because the wind was blowing Luke's hair in his eyes. “Get lost, Noah,” he drawled.
“I'll pay,” Noah offered.
Luke sighed allowed and looked up the road, attempting to ignore Noah in the hopes that he'd just go away, but Noah was too persistent.
“At least let me buy you a cup of coffee; get you out of the cold for a little while,” Noah insisted.
Luke glanced at Noah, down to his watch, over at the street, and then back to Noah before finally giving in. “Fine, but if someone takes my spot I'm gonna be so pissed off.”
Noah nodded and opened the door from the inside of his car. Luke got in and Noah pulled off.
“I think there's a diner a few blocks away,” he said calmly. Luke just stared out the window, not showing any sign that he heard or even cared what Noah had said, causing Noah to frown. “Business slow tonight?”
Luke sighed yet again and continued to ignore him.
Noah was beginning to become agitated himself. “Are you not going to speak to me at all?” he inquired.
Luke looked at him and smirked mockingly. “What would you like me to say?” he asked shortly.
“I don't care, but stop fucking ignoring me,” Noah spat out.
Luke looked back out the window. “Just stop the car,” he said in an exhausted tone. “I don't want to deal with this tonight.”
Noah began to slow down, but then appeared to change his mind because he sped up again. “No. I haven't seen you in over two weeks and you aren't going to—,” but he was cut short by an extremely angry blond.
“Fuck you!” Luke growled. “I don't want to see you, Noah! I don't want to see you, I don't want to talk to you, and I don't want to know you!”
Noah just kept driving, but his expression did fall a slightly. The two sat in silence for a while before they came to the shabby-looking diner Noah had mentioned prior. He pulled into the tiny lot and parked the car. Noah put his head on the steering wheel and then looked over to Luke. “I'm sorry,” he said gently.
Luke sighed and knocked the back of his head against the headrest behind him a few times. “Noah,” he began as calmly as possible, “you and I cannot happen. We've been over this. I don't do dates or boyfriends or any of that stuff. And I don't do love. I'm an escort. That's what I do. I can't afford to fall in love. I'll only hurt you because of what I do. Don't you understand that?”
Noah stared at him longingly and whispered, “Then why haven't you ever made me pay?”
Luke ran his hands through his hair and rubbed his eyes. “You're not... I mean...” he struggled for something to say. “I don't... I don't consider you a client. When we've slept together it wasn't work.”
“What was it?” Noah pushed.
“I don't know!” Luke raised his voice. “It was just... fun. A good time.”
“Is that all? I was just a good time? Because the last time didn't seem that way,” Noah said. “It seemed like more than that to me.”
Luke groaned. “Even if it was, it doesn't matter.” There was a tense pause before he added, “So are we going to get coffee or not?”
Noah smiled sadly and nodded. The two got out of the car and went into the diner. A young woman, maybe around their age, was waiting on the only other person there, a large man sitting in the corner.
“Sit wherever you like. I'll be with you in just a moment,” she called to them.
Luke and Noah sat down at a small table on the opposite side of the room. They waited in silence for the waitress to approach. She had long, dark hair pulled back in a loose bun, a red and white server's uniform with a stained, white apron, and a name tag that read: Maddie.
“What can I get you fellas this morning?” she asked politely.
“Just a couple cups of coffee,” Noah said quietly.
She nodded and asked, “Would you like cream or sugar?”
Noah glanced over to Luke, who shook his head, and then replied, “No thanks.”
“Alright then. I'll be right out with that. And my name is Maddie so if you need anything else just yell at me and I'll come right over,” she said with a smile and turned away.
“She seems nice,” Noah said, attempting to make conversation.
Luke just nodded and fidgeted with the napkin and utensils in front of him.
“Are you hungry?” Noah asked.
Luke frowned and looked up at him. “I'll be fine.”
Noah gave him a warm smile and said, “Get something to eat.”
“I said I'm fine,” Luke replied.
Noah leaned forward so he was a bit closer and whispered, “You're gonna eat, dammit,” with a quirky grin.
It made Luke smile slightly but he fought hard to hide it. “Fine,” he mouthed just as Maddie returned with two empty mugs and a pot of black coffee.
She placed the mugs in front of each of them and then filled them. “Is there anything else you would like?”
“Actually yes. What kind of desserts do you have?” Noah asked.
“Ice cream, chocolate and vanilla. And then we've got apple pie, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, and we may have some lemon bars left,” Maddie answered.
“Can we have two slices of that apple pie and maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side?” Noah asked and raised his eyebrow.
“Sure thing sweetie,” Maddie smiled and went off again.
“How'd you know out of all of that I like apple pie with ice cream?” Luke inquired.
“Cause that's what I wanted and I'm paying so you're getting the same thing!” he laughed.
Luke grinned and ran his fingers through his hair before taking a sip of the steaming coffee. “It's nice to be inside for a while, I guess. I didn't think the wind would be so cool tonight or I'd have gotten a jacket.”
“Do you have a place to stay tonight?” Noah pried.
Luke took another sip of his coffee and shrugged. “I was betting on a client getting a cheap motel room and I'd just stay there, but it's been so slow tonight...” he trailed off.
“You're gonna stay with me then,” Noah said.
Luke shook his head. “That's not a good idea.”
“Why? If you don't have anywhere to stay then—”
Before he could finish Luke started in. “I don't need your pity.”
“And I don't need your attitude,” Noah fired back. “It's not pity. I want to make sure you're okay, and if that means you need a place to crash then you'll use my flat. Besides, it wasn't a question.”
“I'm not taking your handouts,” Luke said angrily under his breath. “I can take care of myself.”
“If you consider sleeping with completely random strangers who you have no idea what they could do to you is taking care of yourself then I suppose you're right!” Noah cried out before realizing how loud he'd actually said it and looked around. The large man eating in the opposite corner either didn't hear or ignored it, because he seemed very occupied with the big, greasy burger and fries in front of him. When Noah caught Luke's face he knew what he'd said hit a nerve. Luke's eyes were watering and his expression was broken.
“I'm sorry,” Noah said quickly, but it was too late. Luke was already up and moving towards the door. Noah threw a twenty on the table and went out after him. He practically had to run down the sidewalk to catch up. Luke was bawling and stumbling incoherently along. When Noah reached him he wrapped his arms around Luke, who immediately began swinging.
“Leave me alone!” he shouted over and over again.
Luke tried to push Noah away, but he was just too exhausted and weak. He collapsed in Noah's arms and sobbed loudly, clutching onto him for support.
“I'm so sorry,” Noah cooed. “I didn't mean it.” As he continued to whisper soothing words to Luke, Noah rocked the blond back and forth until Luke was sniffling and hiccuping into Noah's neck.
Luke looked up at Noah, his face red and and tear-stained, and sobbed, “Why do you care about me?”
Noah stared down at him for a moment before replying, “Because you are a great person, and you deserve better than what life gave you.”
Luke melted into Noah and started crying again, but Noah knew it was for different reasons than earlier, so he said nothing. He just held Luke for a long while.
Finally, Luke whispered, “You're an ass,” and sniffled a laugh.
Noah chuckled. “I know.”
“I'm cold,” Luke said absentmindedly.
“Let's go home,” Noah replied. He helped Luke up and back to the car at the diner. Noah lived across town so it was a while before they got to his flat. Neither spoke the entire drive, but Noah held Luke's hand in his lap, rubbing comforting circles on Luke's wrist. Noah had to park a block away and they walked for a few minutes before arriving at their destination. Noah punched a pin number into a small device beside the door and there was a loud click. He opened the door and followed Luke inside. They climbed three flights of stairs and came to a single door. Noah fidgeted with his keys before letting them into his flat. He locked up behind them.
The flat was beautifully furnished with an open floor plan to make it seem that much larger than it already was. There were several paintings and artworks hanging on the neutral colored walls, and the floors were dark and hardwood. The modern kitchen with sleek, stainless steel appliances was off to the left. There was a large dining table just past the kitchen and beyond that was a half-bathroom. Centered was a sitting area with a flat-screen plasma hanging from the ceiling, and further to the right was an archway which led to the master bed and bath. There was also a balcony with a small breakfast table for morning coffee just outside the bedroom. The entire back wall was covered in glass windows that adjusted to the light, darkening when the sun hit them and becoming clearer during the night. The view of the cityscape was breathtaking.
“You remember where everything is?” he asked.
Luke nodded. “Yeah.”
“Do you want something to eat? Since we didn't stay for the ice cream and pie... The fridge is fully stocked and I'm sure there's plenty of stuff in the pantry too,” Noah offered.
Luke shook his head and said, “No. I'm not really hungry anymore.”
“Do you want a shower?” Noah asked.
Luke shook his head again. “I just want to go to bed.”
“You know the way,” Noah said, ushering Luke along. When they got in the bedroom Noah took his blazer and shoes off, and then went to the walk-in closet. He crouched down and retrieved a spare blanket. Then he went to the bed and grabbed one of the four pillows.
“Where are you going?” Luke asked.
Noah shrugged. “I'll let you have the bed and I'll sleep on the sofa... well, I don't think I'm going to get any sleep tonight, but still.”
Luke frowned. “Well, goodnight then.”
Noah smiled. “Sweet dreams.”
Noah walked back into the larger room and went to the sofa. He put the pillow down and tossed the blanket aside, deciding he didn't really want it. He laid down and crossed his arms over his chest. As he stared up at the ceiling blankly, his mind was stuck on Luke. Noah knew he was falling in love with him. He'd known that for a long time, ever since he first met the blond in the crowded nightclub he knew he was going to fall for Luke. They danced all night and went back to Noah's place. They became very comfortable with each other and Luke stayed all morning. Noah gave Luke his cell number and Luke went on his way late in the afternoon.
A week later Noah got a call from Luke, asking for help. Luke had gotten into a fight with a 'friend', who Noah later found out was an escort. Noah picked Luke up and let him stay with him. Noah nursed Luke's bruises and then they fucked like rabbits into the morning yet again. They fell asleep together and when Noah woke up Luke was gone. Noah went a while without hearing from Luke again, and then one night Noah was coming home from meeting friends at a bar. He passed by Luke standing by the road and asked him if he needed a ride. Luke blushed and told him he was fine; that he didn't need a ride from Noah. One of Luke's friends approached them and said, “He's cute. You want a good time, babe?” That's when Noah realized that Luke was an escort.
After that, Luke seemed to disappear. Noah had a hard time tracking him down, but eventually found Luke three weeks later at the nightclub. Luke tried to avoid Noah, and Noah had to practically drag Luke to his car so they could talk. Noah explained that even if he didn't want Luke to do that stuff, he didn't think any less of him for it. They reconnected and saw each other often over the next month. They hooked up every few days and went out a lot together, never on dates but more as friends with benefits. They would go to a bar and have a good time before returning to Noah's and repeating.
But then Noah started becoming attached to Luke and the sex grew more intense and passionate. His feelings got involved, and one night, late in the summer, Noah asked Luke to stop tricking and be his boyfriend. He offered to take care of Luke and since he was a successful interior designer he could afford to treat Luke to a good life. Luke painfully pushed Noah away, and broke contact with him for weeks. Noah knew of all the places Luke advertised himself, so it wasn't hard to find him after the shock of Luke turning him down, but each time was the same. Luke would tell Noah to go away and although Noah tried to get him to talk, he would end up leaving because Luke would either ignore him or yell at him enough to drive him away. However, on this cool autumn night Noah hadn't taken no for an answer, and although he may have gotten Luke to come home with him, he'd pissed Luke off and they still hadn't truly spoken of their relationship, or what little of a relationship they had left.
Fifteen minutes had passed by since Noah bid Luke goodnight. Noah heard light footsteps coming from the bedroom and started to sit up, but instead Luke's unclothed body came pressing down on him. “Luke, I—” he began to say but was hushed when Luke touched his lips against Noah's. Their kiss began slow and sincere as Noah ran his hands up and down Luke's back and shoulders. The delicate skin felt amazing against Noah's fingertips, and it wasn't long before he wanted more, his hands moving to Luke's soft bubble bottom. He hadn't even realized Luke was wearing underwear until he squeezed Luke's ass. Luke's black, low-rise undies were snug on his slim frame, and Noah recognized them from their first night together after the club. He smiled and pushed against Luke as their sweet kissing turned into passionate snogging.
Luke whimpered and rose up, straddling Noah and pulling the shirt off of him. The tanned skin of Noah's torso was smooth and his muscles defined. Luke was lost in the sight of Noah, but was snapped out of it when Noah grabbed him back down and sucked on the delicious flesh of his nick. Luke's moans where muffled into the arm of the sofa, and while Noah kissed and lapped at his collar bone, Luke fidgeted with Noah's pants. He unbuckled the belt and it took a few tries to undo the button before he managed to get the zipper down and Noah's jeans along with it. Noah was wearing underwear similar to Luke's in form, but Noah's were navy with a circular, metallic orange print on the left ass cheek, although it was difficult to see in the dark living space. With his jeans still tangled around his knees, Noah thrust up and started bumping and grinding against Luke's bulge with his own.
They dry-humped, kissed, and fondled each other for a long time before Noah finally kicked off his jeans completely and lifted Luke into his arms. He carried the smaller blond into the bedroom and gently laid him down on the bed. Noah dove in on top of Luke after he pulled their underwear off, and they continued where they left off on the sofa. Noah smashed his lips and tongue to Luke's and their naked bodies pushed together. Their rock-hard cocks rubbed against each others' and sticky precum attached the two just below their navels. Luke spread his legs so Noah could settle between them. He ravaged Luke's neck and shoulder with his tongue and teeth, leaving little marks as he went. Luke moaned louder as Noah attacked his nipple. He clamped down on it with his lips and sucked it hard before flicking his tongue across it several times.
"God, fuck me," Luke groaned huskily.
But suddenly Noah broke contact with Luke and sat on the edge of the bed, trying to catch his breath. “I can't,” he breathed.
“What's wrong?” Luke asked, also breathing heavily.
“I... I just can't,” Noah said quietly.
Luke climbed over to him and wrapped his arms around his dark-haired companion. “Is it something I did?”
Noah didn't answer right away, but then with a deep sigh replied, “I love you, and I can't handle this anymore.”
“You love me?” Luke asked meekly, his big honey eyes widening.
Noah nodded. “I do. But one day you're apart of my life and the next you disappear. Knowing what you do... and not knowing if you're okay; it's too much for me.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “I wanna be with you, but I know I can't. You made it clear. No boyfriends or relationships. And if we sleep together again it will make it even harder for me to try getting over you.” He looked over at Luke and saw silent tears running down Luke's cheeks. Noah pulled him into a warm embrace and stroked his hair.
“How can you love someone like me? I'm just a dirty fucking slut!” he cried.
“No you're not,” Noah said desperately and kissed his forehead. “You're one of the most amazing people I've ever met. You're so beautiful, inside and out. When we stay up all morning just talking about nothing, I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life. I don't care about who you were or how fucked up your past was. You make me happy and that's all I need.” Noah took a deep breath and wiped the tears from his own eyes. “Please just say you'll be with me and I'll take care of everything,” he whispered. “Please... I love you, Luke. I love you so much.”
There foreheads rubbed together and Luke whimpered. “Why do you have to make things so damn complicated?”
Noah touched Luke's wet cheeks with the back of his fingers. “Is it really so complicated? I'm offering you love and support...” he trailed off and then added, “a place to call home, the chance to do the things you want to do. You wouldn't have to worry about finding your next trick so you can make enough money to eat or have somewhere to stay.” Noah had broken down and was crying right along with Luke now. “I don't know why you find it so unfathomable. You could write a book. You always said you wanted to be an author. I could finance it, help get you published. Every morning we could sit out on the balcony and you could work on your book while I have coffee and read the Times.”
Noah stopped and stared as Luke began to grin like a wild man, and then doubled over laughing and sobbing at the same time. “What?” Noah asked.
“You are so ridiculously romantic,” Luke smirked. “You really thought this through, huh?”
Noah sighed and face-palmed himself. “I don't know. I just want to be with you.” He pulled Luke closer. “Will you be with me?”
They both sobered almost instantly and after a moment Luke nodded. “With an offer like that I guess I can't refuse,” he replied softly.
Noah's sapphire eyes lit up. “Really?”
Luke nodded.
“And no more tricking?” Noah added.
Luke shook his head. “No more.”
Noah crushed his lips against Luke's and they kissed briefly before Noah said, “I didn't think such a shitty night could turn out so good. It can't possibly get any better than this.”
“I can think of a few ways it could get better,” Luke replied suggestively.
Noah grinned. “I want to make love to you.”
Luke licked his lips and said, “So what's stopping you?”
