Title: Far Enough - Part 6
Pairing: Luke/Noah
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
AN: This is the final installment. I think this could possibly fit within the storyline and explain why Noah was so adamant about needing "the break." Thanks to everyone who has read this story and indulged me :-)

Noah looked into the hospital room where Holden had told him Luke was. The hallway was empty for the moment so he let himself rest against the wall while he gazed through the window.
Luke’s eyes were closed, but it didn’t exactly look like he was asleep. His brow was furrowed and his hands moved restlessly over the thin hospital sheet, smoothing it over his lap.
‘He looks pale.’ Noah thought.
It wasn’t often that he got to watch Luke unnoticed. They always seemed to be in public, crowded places with lots of people around. The farm, school, work. Even at the cottage where there had been times where they were actually alone, the whispers and silent voices of other people surrounded them. And the very real presence of Ameera had changed their relationship into hand holding and sly glances.
Was he ready to be alone with Luke? Could he walk into the room, hug and kiss Luke and sit next to him, all the while intending to break up with him?
While he worried, he silently watched Luke drift into sleep, his body relaxing and his chest rising evenly with his deep breaths. How many times had he done the same thing while Luke had been recovering from his fall? How many times would he be sitting by while Luke was injured, hurt or in pain?
Noah had never meant to hurt anyone. He could honestly say that. He only wanted Luke to be happy. And maybe Luke would be happier without him.
Noah didn’t feel the tears that again graced his face. A hallway had suddenly become a precipice and a doorway a looming cliff of indecision. Either direction, any direction was a minefield and Noah didn’t know where to turn.
He suddenly heard Luke's parents approaching, Lily's voice drifting down the hall ahead of her.
Noah furiously wiped his eyes, stepping away from the doorway. He couldn’t face them right now. Couldn't face Luke right now. He couldn’t be there. He didn’t know where he was going as he quickly strode the opposite way down the hallway. He could only think of escape.
He found an exit sign that was almost indecipherable through his tears. He gulped down clean breaths of air and pulled his jacket closer around him for some semblance of warmth. He was cold deep down. He didn’t know if he’d ever feel fully warm again.
As he walked away from the hospital his head was still down. On a bright, sunny day his solitary figure carried an aura of sadness. The day drifted on around him, most people taking no notice of Noah as he made his way through crowded sidewalks. Only time would tell what would happen next.
