“Shh” Luke sooths, stroking his good hand slowly up and down Noah’s shaking back. “It’s okay, I’m right here.” Luke doesn’t even notice his parents until he hears the door closing behind them, but he can’t bring himself to care. After three days of hell he’s finally right where he wants to be. “Hush now, everything is fine” Luke says once Noah finally seems to have calmed down.
“How can you say that?” Noah asks, sitting up and turning away from him. “My father put you in the hospital again. God Luke, I’m so sorry.”
“None of that” Luke insists, cupping Noah’s cheek in his good hand and forcing him to meet his eyes. “We went over this last time – what your father does is not your fault.”
“But he hurt you because of me-” Noah starts and Luke cuts him off.
“No. He hurt me because he’s sick and disturbed. He’s never going to be happy unless everything is exactly how he wants it to be” Luke says, squeezing Noah’s hand. “You can’t live your life to please someone else Noah.”
“You’re right. I know you’re right. It’s just hard not to feel guilty” Noah says, quirking a half-smile at Luke. He takes Luke’s broken arm gently in one hand and asks “Other than this are you okay?”
“Yeah” Luke answers. “I’m a bit dehydrated, but they said as long as I drink plenty of water the next few days I’ll be fine. What –” a knock on the door cuts him off. “Come in” he calls, and his parents rush into the room.
His mom has her arms wrapped around him in seconds, squeezing him tight, his dad right behind her. “Hey, I’m okay” he reassures them. “They’re letting me out of the hospital as soon as this I.V. is done.”
“Jack wanted me to ask if you’re up to making a statement” he father says.
“Absolutely” Luke answers, wanting to get it over with as quickly as possible.
“How bad is the pain?” his mom asks while Holden goes to get Jack.
“It’s throbbing a bit, but they’ve got me on the good drugs” Luke answers. “Seriously, I’m fine” he says when she just continues to look at him, concerned.
“Hey Luke, you sure you’re up for this?” Jack asks, coming into the room.
“Yeah. Let’s just get it over with” Luke answers.
“Okay. First just tell me what happened. If I need anything more specific I’ll ask” Jack says, pulling out a pen and notebook.
“I’m not sure how Colonel Mayer got into the house, but I woke up when he put his hand over my mouth. He had a gun and he said if I made any noise he would kill me. I wanted to make sure someone would know that I hadn’t left willingly, so I knocked the picture I keep of me and Noah off my nightstand” Luke says, turning to smile at his boyfriend.
“It worked” Noah answers, scooting closer to Luke and wrapping an arm around him. “I knew as soon as I saw it that you had been forced to leave.”
Luke leans back into Noah’s arms and sighs before he continues “The Colonel took me out to his car where he handcuffed and blindfolded me. We drove for probably an hour. When he let me out of the car we were in the woods. He forced me into some sort of underground bunker. He left me food and water for three days, but I didn’t trust him to actually come back, so I didn’t drink very much – that’s why I’m dehydrated. There wasn’t much in the bunker – just a mattress and some dishes. I used one of the forks to try to dig my way out. I didn’t make much progress, but it sharpened the handle to a point and I realized I might be able to use it as a weapon. When the Colonel came back this morning I managed to take him by surprise. He broke my arm, but I got away and I locked him in the bunker.”
“You mean he’s there now?” Jack as sharply, sitting up straight.
“Unless he’s found a way out” Luke answers.
“I have more questions I’ll need answered later” Jack says, abruptly standing up.
“Wait, where are you going?” Luke asks.
“To arrest Colonel Mayer” Jack says.
“I want to come with you” Luke and Noah say at the same time.
“Not a chance” Lily says, at the same time as Holden and Jack give resounding no’s.
“I need to see this finished” Noah says. “But Luke, you need to stay here and rest. I don’t want him anywhere near you ever again.”
“Hey, I need to see him put away for good too. I’ve told you I’m going to be fine” he says, turning a pleading look on Noah, the look Noah has never been able to resist. “Let’s just finish this, then everything can go back to normal.” Seeing that Noah has given in he turns the look on his parents and Jack. “Look, I won’t get near him. I just need to see with my own eyes that he won’t be able to come after us again.”
It takes a bit more convincing, but eventually Luke and Noah end up in the back seat of Jack’s car. Jack has had men scouring the area since they found Luke, and about 15 minutes after they leave the hospital someone calls to say they have found the bunker. Jack tells them to wait until he gets there, and a few minutes later they pull into a clearing filled with police.
“You boys stay here” Jack orders, pulling his gun as he gets out of the car. Luke reaches out to take Noah’s hand and they watch in silence as Jack talks to some of the other policemen, then heads for the bunker, several men following him with their guns drawn.
Jack uses the keys Luke had given to the policewoman who found him to unlock the door then Jack steps back and shouts something. Nothing happens for several seconds, then the door bursts open and Colonel Mayer steps out with his arms over his head looking incredibly pissed off. Luke hears Noah gasp as his father is handcuffed and he squeezes his hand in comfort, but before he can stop him Noah steps out of the car. Luke hurries after him, catching up in time to hear Noah shout “Stay out of my life” at his father.
“Noah - Son” Winston starts, but Noah cuts him off.
“Don’t call me that” Noah growls, stepping closer to his father. “I am not your son anymore. This is the second time you’ve put the man I love in the hospital. Stay the hell away from him – and me. I don’t ever want to see you again. You disgust me.” Noah turns his back on his father and steps forward to take Luke’s hand. “C’mon” Noah whispers, pulling Luke close as they walk back toward Jack’s car.
“Noah!” Colonel Mayer shouts “I did it to protect you. You’re a good boy Noah, you just need me to make you see that. Noah!”
Noah doesn’t turn around, and Luke is surprised to find him totally relaxed. “You okay?” Luke asks.
“I’m good” Noah answers, smiling, and Luke smiles back. It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like Noah has finally realized that he isn’t guilty for his father’s actions.
Jack comes back to the car several minutes later and says “I thought I told you to stay in the car.” Luke tries to look apologetic, but he can’t keep the smile off his face. Colonel Mayer is going back to jail, and Noah looks happier than Luke has ever seen him. All things considered, it’s been a good day.
----------------------------------------
Jack drops them off at the farm before heading back to the police station. “I’ll have to stop by tomorrow to ask you a few more questions Luke” Jack says as they get out. “Get some rest.”
When they get inside most of the Snyder clan is gathered in the kitchen to welcome Luke home. Luke can tell that Noah is a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of people, but he never leaves Luke’s side. After a truly enormous dinner and a couple of pain pills leave Luke yawning in exhaustion everyone starts to head out. “You should go get ready for bed sweetheart” his grandmother says, and Luke nods in agreement.
“Hey I’ll meet you upstairs in a minute, okay?” Luke says, pushing Noah toward the stairs.
“Thank you for dinner Grandma, it was excellent” Luke says, leaning in to kiss her cheek. “I wanted to ask you something” he says after a moment.
“Of course” she says, stopping her cleaning to look at him.
“Grandma, can Noah stay the night? Please?” he begs when he sees the No coming. “I swear to you we won’t do anything under your roof that you wouldn’t approve of. I just – I really need him with me tonight.” Seeing her expression soften he gives her his best smile.
“Okay Sweetheart” she says laughing. “But no funny business” she says, shaking a finger at him. “I’m just so glad you’re okay” she adds, pulling him into a hug. “Now go get some rest.”
Luke goes up to his room and finds Noah sitting on his bed reading a book. “I talked to my grandma” Luke says, smiling “And she agreed that you can stay tonight as long as we follow the rules and there’s no funny business.”
Noah’s smile lights up the room and he says “Great. Come here.”
Luke sinks happily into his waiting arms, resting his head on Noah’s chest and letting the steady heartbeat lull him into a light sleep. What feels like minutes, but could be hours later he wakes to sound of quiet voices.
“Good night” Noah’s voice rumbles against his ear.
“Night” he hears his dad say.
“Hey” Luke mumbles a moment later, tilting his head to smile up at Noah.
“Hey sleepy head” Noah says, running a hand through Luke’s hair. “You feeling okay? It’s about time for you to take more pain pills.”
“Now that you mention it” Luke agrees, feeling the throbbing in his arm. He takes the pills Noah hands him then crawls out of bed and starts to undress.
“Let me” Noah whispers in a husky voice, stepping closer. Luke lets his hands fall to his sides as Noah undoes his buttons and drops his shirt to the floor. The feel of Noah’s hands undoing his pants sends a bolt of heat straight to his belly, and Luke sighs, leaning in to kiss him.
Noah’s arms wrap around Luke, pulling him in close as he meets Luke’s lips with barely concealed passion. After a moment Noah steps back, shushing Luke as he murmurs in protest. “You promised your grandma” he reminds Luke quietly as he strips down to his own boxers. “This time next week we’ll be in our own place and you won’t be in any pain. We can wait” he reminds Luke, gently tracing the line of his cheekbone. “Bed time now” he whispers, taking Luke’s good hand and pulling him down to the bed.
Luke cuddles into Noah’s arms, sighing as the warmth and comfort seep into him, knowing that there will be no nightmare’s tonight. “I love you Noah” Luke whispers.
“I love you too” he hears Noah whisper just before he falls asleep.
