Summary: Noah finds out that Luke is finally safe
Disclaimer: Luke and Noah do not belong to me. If they did we would see a lot more kissing. This story is not for profit. No copyright infringement is intended.
A/N: This should be the second to last part – then possibly an epilogue. Please let me know what you think.
Noah paces back and forth across the living room of the farm as he waits for Jack to arrive. It’s been three days of hell, but when Jack called this morning he said they were finally making progress. The sound of a car pulling into the driveway has Noah, Holden, and Lily all hurrying to the front door.
“Jack” Holden says, grabbing him in a quick hug. “What’s going on?”
“Let’s all sit down” Jack says, gesturing toward the kitchen. Noah follows him in and takes the seat at the table, impatient to hear what he has to say. “We followed Colonel Mayer again last night after your date with Maddie” Jack says, nodding at Noah. “We think we’re getting close to finding the place he’s keeping Luke. There are men in place to start searching the area as soon as your father shows up to meet with you tonight” Jack says.
“If you know where he’s keeping Luke why haven’t you arrested that psychopath and brought my baby home yet?” Lily asks angrily, her hands shaking as she gets up from the table, and Noah can’t help but wonder the same thing.
“I know this is hard” Jack says soothingly. “But we don’t want to risk anything going wrong before we have Luke back. We aren’t totally sure where Luke is – there is still a wide area to search. We don’t want to risk alerting the Colonel to the fact we’re on to him or he might hurt Luke. I promise you, as soon as we find your son Winston Mayer will be back in custody.”
“How much longer do you think it will be?” Noah asks Jack, disheartened. He’s not sure how much longer he can keep acting like the perfect son around his father. Every time he sees the man his hatred builds. Maddie has been the only thing keeping him going the last three days. Her unwavering support has kept him from loosing it completely.
“I can’t tell you for sure” Jack answers, “but we’re hoping it will only be a few more days. Now, what time are you meeting with your father tonight?” he asks Noah.
“He wants me to meet him at the park at four” Noah answers.
“And what time are you picking up Maddie?” Jack asks.
“At five” Noah answers.
“Okay” Jack says. “We’ll have you wear this earpiece tonight” he says, holding up a miniscule receiver. “We’ll start searching the area for Luke as soon as your father shows up. We know your father stays in town to monitor your dates with Madeline, so we’ll need you to stay out with her as late as you can manage to give us more time to look for Luke. I promise you, we’ll let you know the second we find him” Jack finishes, reaching out to squeeze Noah’s shoulder.
“Thank you for everything you’ve been doing” Noah says, trying to smile at the man. “I guess I’d better call Maddie, huh?”
Noah walks out into the front yard and takes a moment to compose himself. Every hour his terror for Luke gets stronger. It’s only been three days but he’s in a constant state of panic. He doesn’t think he’ll survive three more. He takes a deep breath and pushes speed dial 5. “Hey Maddie” he says, trying to sound cheerful. He knows his father has bugged both of their lines so he can’t tell her what is going on, but he tries his best to convey that something will be happening tonight. “We still on for 5 tonight?”
“Yeah” Maddie answers, sounding curious.
“Great. Make sure you let Henri and
“Will do” Maddie answers, sounding more curious than ever but playing along like she knows what he’s talking about. “I’ll see you tonight.”
Noah pockets his phone and turns to head back to the house when he hears the sound of shouting from inside. He runs across the yard and slams in through the kitchen door to find Lily sobbing, as she clutches Holden to her desperately.
Noah swears his heart stops beating as his body floods with terror. “What’s happened?” he manages to gasp out, convinced that something horrible has happened.
Lily turns and grabs Noah, burying her face in his shoulder as she sobs out something he can’t understand. Noah glances at Holden and feels his heart start again at the happiness shining from the man’s face. “They’ve found Luke” Holden says, beaming at Noah. “He’s at the hospital. Let’s go” Holden grabs coats for all three of them and pulls a still sobbing Lily from Noah’s arms, leading the way to the car.
Noah follows Luke’s parents in a daze. “He’s okay?” Noah asks in a shaking voice.
“He’s going to be fine” Holden answers as he starts the car.
“What – How did they find him?” Noah asks, confused. “They weren’t supposed to start searching until tonight.”
“I don’t really know the details” Holden says, “But Jack got a call. Apparently they found Luke driving your Father’s truck near the area they were waiting to search.”
“Thank God” Noah whispers, relaxing back against the seat as the tension leaves his body for the first time in three days. The five minute drive to the hospital feels like it takes hours, and Noah is the first one out of the car.
“Luke Snyder” Noah gasps as he skids to a halt in front of the woman at the reception desk, Lily and Holden right on his heels.
She smiles politely as she pulls up the information on the computer and says “He’s down in x-ray. I’ll let you know when you can go in to see him.”
“X-ray?” Noah asks. “What’s wrong with him?”
The woman glances at her computer and says “He appears to have a broken wrist and to be suffering a mild case of dehydration. Please, have a seat. He’s in room 223. I’ll let you know when you can see him.”
Lily and Holden follow her advice and take a seat in the hard plastic waiting room chairs, but Noah is too wired to stay still, pacing the length of the room like a caged tiger. Finally the woman comes out from behind the desk and says “You can go in now.”
Noah is the first one through the door of Luke’s room. He freezes at the sight of Luke’s exhausted face, the lines of pain obvious even in sleep. He’s across the room in seconds without any idea how he got there, oblivious to everything but the man he loves as he climbs into the bed beside him, wrapping his arms around him. As Luke’s scent fills his lungs he feels something inside him relax, and suddenly he’s exhausted. “Luke” he whispers. “God, Luke” and his arms tighten around his lover’s sleeping form.
Luke’s parents step up to the bed, but Noah doesn’t have it in him to feel self conscious. He loves Luke Snyder and he doesn’t care who knows it.
“Luke” Lily says softly, reaching out to cup her son’s face. “Wake up baby.”
Luke moans in protest, turning to snuggle into Noah’s arms. After a moment he finally starts to stir, pulling back slightly to look at Noah, smiling sweetly up at him. “Noah” he sighs, leaning in for a sweet, lingering kiss.
Noah feels like something inside him has broken loose, and after a moment he pulls back, shaking. He cups Luke’s face in his hands and looks deep into gorgeous brown eyes. “I love you Luke” he whispers, his voice breaking. “I love you so much,” and suddenly he’s bawling like a baby, letting out all the terror of the past three days, his face buried in Luke’s shoulder as warm arms wraps tightly around him.
