He pulls the car up to the house and parks it. I smile as I see Vinnie rushing inside with a few bags.
“Do you need any help?” I ask as we make our way inside.
“No, I got it all,” he says, shutting the kitchen door. “Dinner will be ready in one hour. Don't not come into the kitchen for any reason!”
I smile and lead Noah into the living room.
“He takes this very seriously, doesn’t he?” Noah asks.
“Yeah, he does,” I say. “Do you want a tour of the house?”
“Yeah,” Noah says, standing up I stand as well and begain the tour.
“This is the living room,” I say. I show him the dinning room, the door to the kitchen, since we are not allowed in there, and the rec room.
“Oh, wow. Nice TV,” Noah says, looking at it.
“It’s Vinnie’s. Maddie hates the fact that it’s here. She don't want a TV in the house” I say. “Well, the bedrooms are upstairs,” I say as Noah sits down. He pats the seat next to him and I sit down. He takes my hand and laces his fingers with mine.
“Do you wanna watch it?” I ask.
He shakes his head. “No, I’d rather just talk,” he says. I look at him and smile, then look down. Panice runs thought me. Ok this it. It's time. Time to tell him everything. I hold me breath and try to find the right place to begain. I have no clue what to say to him. Where to start. I start to feel a bit light headed.
“Not about that,” he says.
“Well, we have to talk about it sooner, or later,” I say. I take in a beep breath.
“Later is fine,” he says.
“Ok, so what do you want to talk about?” I ask. He is prefect. But I can't help but wonder if the panic look in my face made him change is mind.
“Anything you want,” he says, putting his arm around me.
“Ok, do you like sports?” I ask.
He smiles. “I love all my hometown teams,” he says. “What about you?”
“I like some sports,” I say. “Football, racing and baseball. I don’t follow college sports much.”
“Hm, well you’re missing out,” Noah says, leaning his head back on the couch. I rest my head on his shoulder and close my eyes. I could easily fall asleep. I feel very comfortable in his arms. He looks just as tired as feel.
“Dinner is ready!” Vinnie yells down, making the both of us jump. I stretch and stand up. Noah does the same. He smiles and holds his hand out. He pulls me up and again kisses my hand. I can't help to think of how good a kiss from him will feel. We both head upstairs.
“Wow, Vin, that smells insane,” I say, taking a deep breath.
“Please, have a seat,” he says, pointing to the table. It’s set with three plates. I’m guessing Maddie won’t be home for a while. There is a bottle of wine on ice and a salad bowl in the middle of the table. Noah pulls my chair out and I sit down.
“Thanks,” I say as he sits next to me. Vinnie comes out with a basket full of rolls. He sits them near the salad and heads back into the kitchen. I reach for the rolls.
“He makes these from scratch,” I say, placing one on my plate.
“I should hire him at the bar,” Noah says, helping himself to the salad. He hands me the bowl. I fill my plate half way and Vinnie appears again. He sits down and opens the wine and fills his glass. He fills his, then Noah’s and looks at me. I smile and shake my head.
“She never drinks much,” he says, standing up.
“Vin, I can get my own drink?” I ask.
“Sit down and tell me what you want,” he orders. I sit down.
“Coke,” I say. He gets up and leaves the room.
“He thinks all fine dinners should be eaten with wine and it’s an insult to drink a soda with such a meal,” I say.
Noah smiles and takes a drink. “Wow, this is good,” he says.
“Now, he didn’t make that,” I say as Vinnie returns with my drink in a wine glass.
“What a waste of a fine meal,” he says. “I’ll just toss a few burgers on the grill next time and be done with it,” he says, getting himself a roll and some salad.
“Oh, get over it,” I say taking a drink of my pop.
“So, what bar do you own?” He asks.
“The Flaming Aces,” Noah says.
“Oh, yeah? I’ve been there a few times,” he says. “Nice quiet place.”
“Yeah. I like it that way,” Noah says. “Gin says you are a chef.”
“Yeah, at the Double Deuces,” he says. “I hate the name. It scares a lot of people off. I wish I could change it. But the owner won't listen to me.”
“She never eats much, either,” he says, watching me pick at my salad.
“I’m saving room for the shrimp,” I say as I sit my fork down.
“You’ve lost a lot of weight,” he says.
“Vinnie….” I say. I know this was coming. He's been so worried about me and now it seems he's going to get Noah on his side.
“Oh, sorry,” he says, looking at Noah.
Noah smiles and takes another sip of wine.
“I’ll go check on the shrimp,” he says, standing up. He again leaves the room and I look over at Noah.
“He worries like a big brother,” I say, finishing off my drink. “My pills kill my appetite,” I say.
Noah nodded and looks down at this salad.
“Oh, you guys are going to love this,” Vinnie says, walking into the room. He’s holding the pot and a spoon. It was some kind of shrimp and pasta with a white sauce. He filled all the plates and sat down. I take a bit and smile.
“This is really good,” I say.
“Wow, you made this?” Noah asks after taking bite.
Vinnie just grins as he takes a bit. “Yeah, I did,” he says. Much to Vinnie’s disappointment, I only ate about half of my meal. I push away the plate and rub my stomach.
“I can’t eat anymore,” I say.
He looks at me and shakes his head.
“At least I eat some of it,” I say.
He nods and look at Noah. “Would you like some more?” He asks.
“Oh, no. I couldn’t eat another bite,” he says, pushing his empty plate away.
“Well, you have to make a bit more room. I made dessert,” he says.
“You are trying to kill me,” I say as he stands up. He picks out the plates and walks out of the room.
“I think I should eat at his place all the time. I haven't eaten this good in a long time. Chef Warrick's food sucks.” Noah says.
“He test things out on me here before he tries them there. I bet this will be on the menu next week,” I say putting my arm behind my head. Vinnie comes back with three small plates.
“I made berry shortcakes,” he says, sitting the plates in front of us. “With homemade ice cream.”
I somehow force half of it down. I don’t have to worry because Noah finished mine off when Vinnie left to get me more soda.
“I’m eating at your place everyday,” Noah says.
“Thanks,” Vinnie says. “But I only work six days a week.”
“Well, I’ll call first to see if you’re there,” he says, standing up. He looks down at his watch. “Well, I hate to eat and run, but I have to get to work,” he says.
“I had a good time,” I say, softly. I’ve never seen Vinnie leave the room so fast. He is the best. I stand up and walk over to Noah. He takes my hand.
“If you get bored tonight, you know where I’ll be,” he said, kissing my hand again. I look down and he’s gone. I place my hand on my heart and smile.
“Wow, he’s prefect,” Vinnie says, reentering the room.
“I know,” I say. “But will he be when he knows everything?”
“I don’t want to sound like Maddie in any way, but you have to talk to him, honey,” he says, putting his arm around me. “And you need to get some sleep.”
“I know. I wish it was that easy,” I say.
“What? Sleep, or talking to him?”
“Both,” I say, gently pulling away from him.
“You’re going to the bar later, aren’t you?” He asks.
I smile and walk out of the room. I go into my room and removed my shirt and bra. I take off my pants and my gaff and lay down on my bed. I reach for my robe and lay it over me. I close my eyes.
“Gin, can I come in?” I hear. I look over that my clock. It’s a bit after nine. I sit up a bit.
“Ginger, can I please come in?”
It’s Maddie.
“So, you’re calling me Ginger, now?” I ask.
“Please, can I come in?” She asks again.
“Fine,” I say, falling back down on the bed. I make sure my robe is covering me. She walks in and sits next to me.
“I just wanted to say I was sorry and I shouldn’t have said what I did to you,” she said, running her hands over her face. She looks tired.
“You really hurt me,” I say, not looking at her.
“I know. I just, sometimes… I let my feelings get the best of me and I say stupid things,” she says.
“I know what I’m doing,” I say. Which is a lie. I have no clue what I’m doing. The more I see him, the more I like him.
“I talked to Vinnie. He said Noah was a very nice guy,” she says.
“See? I told you,” I say.
“Look, I’ll make a deal. I won’t say anything else, if you forgive me,” she says.
I look at her. “You won’t say anything else at all?”
“Not a word about him,” she says.
“Deal,” I say. “Now, get out of my room. I’m going to the bar,” I say.
“Oh, can I come, too?” She asks.
“Yeah,” I say, sitting up.
“Ginger, I’m so sorry,” she says, pulling me close.
“For what?” I say. “It’s forgotten as long as you keep your end of the deal.”
“I will,” she say. “I’m going to go change,” she walks out of my room. I pull my robe off and stand up. I look at my bed and shake my head. I see a new shirt, shorts, bra and a gaff. I hold up the shirt. It’s a black tank top with a lace-type jacket over it. The shorts are dark jeans with the hems folded up. The bra and gaff are black as well. I see a new pair of shoes on the floor. I put on the new cloths and head into the bathroom to get ready. I come back and there is a black scarf lying on my head.
“You are over doing it,” I say, picking it up. I tie it around my neck and go downstairs.
“Would you mind if I came, too?” Vinnie asks.
“No,” I say. “You can taste chef Warrick’s cooking.”
“I’m sure it’s top of the line,” he says, putting on his jacket.
“It’s warm out. Why are you wearing that,” Maddie says, walking downstairs. She’s wearing a little red dress, red shoes, and red lipstick.
“Damn, sis, you must like this guy. And I want to show off my new jacket,” Vinnie says, looking her up and down. There isn’t much to the dress. I would never wear something like that.
“He’s worth getting to know better. Your coat is going to smell like smoke,” she says, walking outside. I follow her and Vinnie locks the door after he comes out.
“Maddie, I smoke,” he says as we head to the cars.
“I’ll drive,” I say, since I know I’m not going to be drinking. They don’t argue as they get in my car. I can hardly wait to get there. I know it’s crazy, but I really want to see him again. He makes me feel something I can’t explain. I have to pinch myself to keep me in check. I’ve only known him a few days, but, man, I’m falling for him and fast. I park the car.
“Gin is in a hurry,” Vinnie says, getting out. I’m almost at the door before they are even out of the car. I see my reflection in the glass and I fix my hair a bit and pull on my shorts. I wait for them. I don’t want to walk in by myself.
We go inside and there are a bit more people tonight. I look around the bar. I see Warrick, but not Noah. I walk forward and stop, seeing him come out. I smile, but it disappears off my face as I see him go over to a women and take her hand. I stop in my tracks as he leans up on the counter and is whispering in her ear. He looks up and I’m sure he sees me. He smiles, but it fades.
“Ginger,” he says. I turn and walk to a table and sit down.
“Gin, wait,” he says, making his way to the table.
