Prompt: Lucius has been a bad boy and as punishment, The Ministry force him to take over the job of Potions Master. No-one ever said The Ministry had any sense.
Notes: Big thanks to the little_details comm over on LJ for giving me some idea of what Harrods is like. Without it, you would have gotten a Harrods that looked exactly like Rich's.

Lucius was now remembering why he avoided Diagon Alley whenever possible. It wasn't the glares of the common folk, but oh Merlin, the smell. The scent of unwashed child that permeated Hogwarts was bad enough, but the smell of this many people, pressed close together, was nauseating. He hated shopping in crowds. The great unwashed masses. Ugh.
He mentally cursed Minerva McGonagall for forcing him to shop this close to Christmas. Vicious old harpy. Thankfully Narcissa had been kind enough to pick out presents for everyone else and all he needed to do was get her something. Something perfect. Something that said 'I love you' and 'I am very sorry' all in one. He was thinking jewelry, but something unique. And there was nothing here. Nothing at all. Nothing worthy of her, anyway.
"I'm done, father. Can we go now?"
"No, Draco, I still have no idea what to get your mother."
"Jewelry."
"Well, yes. But there's nothing here worthy of her."
"I'm just going to suggest something. Harrods?"
"Where?"
"It's someplace the muggleborns and halfbloods talk about sometimes. Some famous store in the middle of London."
"Somehow I doubt that Muggles would have anything."
"Worth a try, though."
Lucius sighed. Honestly, to be reduced to shopping in Muggle London. Generations of Malfoys were now turning over in their graves.
"Plus, mother won't have scoped out Muggle stores. So whatever you get her will be a complete surprise."
"You just want to go see this store, don't you?"
"Well, that too. I'm curious."
"Fine. Do we need to change?"
Draco looked critically at his father.
"I think we're okay. Professor and student robes shouldn't be that remarkable. Do you have any muggle money?"
"I think a trip to Gringotts is in order."

About three hours later (they got lost) two men stood outside Harrods. They looked rather bewildered. Holiday shoppers pushed past them.
"That's a big shop."
"Yes. Now, shall we go in?"
"I'm not so sure about this."
"Father, it's a shop. Not the Dark Lord's den. Now, come on. I want to see what all the fuss is about."
"Have I threatened to disown you recently?"
"Yes. If I didn't have children."
"Damn."
"Honestly, it won't be that bad."
"Surrounded by muggles?"
Lucius shuddered theatrically.
"Father you are going in there if I have to physically drag you. And then I will tell mother all about it. Now come on."
Draco grabbed his father by the hand and they went inside.
"That's a lot of people."
"Wow."
They stood there for a moment, as other shoppers jostled them. There were decorations and ornamentation everywhere, and a massive amount of people. Over to the side was a list of prohibited items. Draco shoved his way through the crowd to read them.
"Draco!"
"Just looking. Now, we need to figure out where the jewelry is."
"Go that way. Can't miss it. Who's the lucky lady, teach?"
Lucius looked at the muggle man now addressing him and Draco. A muggle was talking to him. Gah. And 'teach'? 'Teach'? How undignified.
"Thank you sir. Come on, father."
Draco grabbed Lucius by the hand and pulled him in the direction the strange muggle was indicating. The crowds made it hard to walk, but Draco had never been one for politely making his way through a crowd.
"Ow. Watch it, you!"
"Where's the fire?"
"Damn it, young man! Watch where you're going."
Lucius trailed along behind Draco, completely overwhelmed. There was just too much to see, and too many muggles. Easier to let the boy handle things.
Soon enough, Draco had pushed and shoved his way into the jewelry department. There were what seemed like a million glass cases full of necklaces, earrings, broaches, and rings.
"Father, if you can't find something here for her, you should just give up."
Lucius nodded in agreement. There was bound to be something here for her. Something with sapphires and diamonds, perhaps.
Draco shoved his way up to a counter and caught the eye of one of the salesgirls.
"My father wants to buy something for my mother."
"Certainly, sir. What sort of jewelry were you considering?"
Draco looked expectantly at Lucius who was, perhaps not gawking, since Malfoys never gawked, but was certainly staring. He poked his father.
"Oh, um, sapphires and diamonds, I would think. Something to match her eyes."
"And is there a price range?"
Lucius pulled out a very thick wad of bank notes. There was a scrap of parchment wrapped around it. He carefully put the bank notes back and read the scrap.
"I believe 50 thousand is my upper limit at the moment."
The salesgirl's eyes went wide.
"Well, then sir, we have some lovely pieces. Did you have a preference on type, such as a necklace or earrings?"
Lucius thought for a second.
"She dislikes earrings, and has more than enough rings."
Draco snickered.
"Draco?"
"As far as mother's concerned, there's no such thing as more than enough jewelry."
"Thank you, Draco. A necklace, I think."
"Certainly sir. If you would come this way..."
She led them to a case full of glittering baubles and pulled some out.
"Perhaps this, or this?"
Lucius leaned over, and winced.
"Are you alright, sir?"
"Bad back."
"Oh yes, backs can be very troublesome. My dad has a bad back, gives him nothing but trouble. By the way, sir, if you don't mind my asking, where do you teach?"
"A small public school. You wouldn't have heard of it."
"And that's your son, is it?"
Lucius looked over at Draco. He had wandered off and was looking at something in another case.
:"Yes, that's my son. And I'd like to see something like that one."
He indicated a ruby and diamond choker.
"Yes, sir. I'll need to check to see if that's available in sapphires, sir. Won't be a moment."
Lucius looked around. There weren't as many muggles in here. It was nice.
"Draco, what are you looking at?"
"Rings. Pans would like the snake one."
"Have you gotten her a present yet?"
"Yes. Mother helped me pick it out. I wanted to get her jewelry, but apparently it's not appropriate yet."
"She's right. Wait till you're engaged, then you can get her all the jewels your allowance can stand."
"Sir?"
The salegirl had come back.
"Yes?"
"We don't have that exact piece, but we have this. It's quite similar."
She held a sapphire and diamond necklace against her skin. Lucius looked closely at it.
"Diamonds surrounded by sapphires. A bit more unusual. Draco?"
"She'll love it."
"Well, then, please wrap it up."
"Yes, sir."
"See, father, this was a productive trip."
Lucius handed the wad of banknotes over to the salesgirl. She counted them quickly, then put them into a drawer in some sort of machine, and took out some change.
"Here you are, sir. Have a happy Christmas!"
Draco took both the package and his father's hand.
"Come on. It's almost time for dinner, and you need to hide that."
Lucius smiled. Dinner at home. Sounded like paradise after months of Hogwarts food, and noisy meals in the Great Hall. Now they just needed to find a good apparation spot.
////////////////////////////////////////
About two hours later Lucius lounged on a sofa, a smile on his face. He had good food, and was looking forward to a lovely evening. 'Cissa hadn't been present for dinner, unavoidably detained by something or other, but he and Draco had made the best of it. Now she just needed to return, so he could prove that he'd really missed her. Draco had wandered up to his room as soon as dinner was over, proclaiming that he was planning to stay in there till morning, and would be casting silencing charms. He heard the front door open. 'Cissa was finally home.
"Lucius? Draco?"
"In here, dearest."
Narcissa came into the lounge. She looked tired and slightly disheveled. Lucius patted the sofa next to him.
"Come and sit down. You look exhausted."
She sat down next to him, and he immediately put his arm around her, pulling her close. Her scent filled the air. How he'd missed that scent, of lilacs and roses.
"Do you want me to get you a drink?"
"No, Lucius. I just want to relax for a bit. I'd forgotten how tiring taking care of a toddler can be."
"And why were you taking care of a toddler?"
"Romy has the flu. I went over to help out."
He nuzzled the nape of her neck.
"My sweet, thoughtful 'Cissa. I've missed doing this."
She smiled.
"I missed you too. What say we rest here for a bit, then adjourn to the bedroom?"
"Only if you're not too tired."
"Come on Lucius, don't want me any more?"
Her tone was light, teasing, but there was an undercurrent of worry.
"I want you so much. If I could, I'd spend the rest of my life in your bed and never tire of it. You are the most beautiful woman in the universe, and I'm the luckiest man to have you."
"So you don't want this Peters chap more than me?"
"Merlin, no. I could never want anyone more than you."
She stood up and sat back down in his lap.
"Just checking."
He wrapped his arms around her tightly. This was perfect, just what he'd wanted. She sighed and he felt her relax against him.
"Comfortable?"
"There's no place I'd rather sit."
Twin smiles lit up both their faces as they stared into the fire.
"'Cissa?"
"Hmm."
"What did I get Draco?"
"I'll show you tomorrow. Am I getting something I'll like?"
"I sincerely hope so, after all the trouble I went through."
"Trouble?"
"I'll tell you later. Let's just sit."
Soon Narcissa's even breathing told Lucius that she had fallen asleep. He picked her up, ignoring the warning pangs in his back, and took her upstairs to bed. Tomorrow was soon enough to demonstrate just how much he'd missed her.
