Taste Of Normal
Some days Kris really hated her job, mostly because it meant on the rare occasions she got any time off inevitably she’d run into somebody she knew from the station that would harangue her in whatever line or store until she knew everything there was to know about all the going ons, including the would be escapee who had yet to turn up again.
The less said on that particular matter the better.
Thankfully she was able to escape or she would have to fake an emergency phone call before she gave herself away because she knew she would, she wasn’t good at hiding guilt. It had been a right pain in the rear when she was younger, meaning she got away with next to nothing.
Kris snuck a cigarette whilst her older brother wasn’t looking, given that he was back in the states for a while and he had an issue with her smoking even though he’d smoked when he was younger. Apparently going into the marines meant you needed to live a clean life, free of vices and other such things.
“Is that a cigarette I see”
Kris cursed in Spanish, having been so worried about Antonio that she’d completely forgotten that Daniel had come along on the shopping expedition. “Don’t you start on me.”
Daniel shot her a grin and wiggled his fingers. “Give it here, don’t hold out on me, little sister.”
Kris rolled her eyes and passed it over. “You really should just come out and tell the world that you’re a smoker.”
Daniel inhaled a drag and shook his head. “Nah, I’ll do it when I’m ready.”
“You make it sound like you’re about to tell them that you’re gay or something.” Kris stuck her tongue out at Daniel before she used him to hide behind as her colleague took this moment to wander out of the nearby clothes store, wanting to avoid a further conversation about the dramatic escape.
“You okay?”
“Who, me?” Kris asked, affecting an innocent expression. “Fine, just fine.”
Daniel lifted an eyebrow and took note of the man walking in the other direction. “Avoiding the dreaded work colleague, hm?”
Kris grinned sheepishly. “Something like that.”
Daniel chuckled and nodded. “I can understand that.”
At this point Kris rolled her eyes and gave him a playful shove as she went around him, heading back towards the car. “And who are you avoiding? The hot young model you just so happened to be drawing this week?”
“Hey,” Daniel objected. “That’s all work, no pleasure involved! And if you must know yes actually as she’s all freaky and stuff. It isn’t fun for me!”
Kris snorted and slid back into the car, leaning over to fill Antonio in who ribbed Daniel as soon as the other man was in the car. It was as her brothers exchanged easy teases and made jokes that Kris felt normal, the first time in a while.
It was nice, really nice.
