Unfortunately, Charles had a great deal of experience with rebuilding his home after it had been damaged, so it only took a few hours for the Institute to be back in a habitable condition. Mutations had practical applications in non-combat situations such as this and Charles was grateful to those who had used their powers to make his home whole again.
But that didn't get to the root of the problem. Jean, his Jean, had chosen to go with the younger 'version' of Erik Lehnsherr than to stay where she belonged, with him. She had abandoned the home and the family she had once dedicated herself to and for what? Sex? It was so out of character for her. She was much better than that, Charles knew. Something else had to be behind it all.
He wheeled his wheelchair into his study and closed the door behind him. He had just returned to the mansion from an emergency meeting of the Illuminati – the group including the brightest minds of their world – having learned that Tony Stark had been behind the anomaly that had brought the younger version of Erik to the current point in time. Charles had forced himself not to kill the man outright for his foolishness. Stark was always pushing boundaries and toying with things he had no right to meddle in, and it had cost Charles dear, sweet Jean.
At least the majority had agreed that this anomaly had to be dealt with, that the duplicates of Jean and Erik had to be removed by whatever means necessary. Strange had grumbled, of course, but the good doctor worried too much about the Multiverse and not enough about the here and now as far as Charles was concerned. The details still had to be worked out but at least something would be done. And with any luck, they'd eliminate both Eriks. Yes, it would be a shame to lose the man who had been his friend, but some crimes could not be forgiven, and stealing Jean away was one such crime.
He poured himself a drink of whiskey and settled in behind his desk. He didn't want Jean injured in whatever operation happened. Carefully, he reached out with his telepathy.
