He was determined not to let this hate mail crap bother him, but with everything else going on, he wasn't sure how much longer he could avoid it. James had obviously caught on to the fact that Sirius had been avoiding. The truth was? Sirius had no idea how to act around James, knowing the things that he knew. Sirius needed to sit James down and explain everything, his behavior, the future...but with whatever it was going on between James and Lily, Sirius wasn't sure that now was such a good time to have that sort of conversation. Even so, he knew that it was inevitable, and he dreaded it with every fiber of his being. After all, how was he going to explain to James that "Oh yeah, by the way, you die."
Pushing himself up out of his chair, Sirius checked his reflection in the mirror. All his vanity aside, Sirius had to admit, he looked good, much better than he had when he arrived in Hogsmeade almost two months ago. He hadn't even recognized himself then; pale skin, sunken eyes, not to mention the wretched looking hair. Now, the color had returned to his skin, as had its warmth. He had hated feeling so cold all the time, but now it wasn't an issue. He'd put on some weight as well, and he no longer looked like a walking skeleton. He finally started to look like himself again. Running a hand through his hair, Sirius made his way towards the door. He'd completely forgotten about the Ministry's offer of employment, until the hate mail had showed up several days ago. So, he'd decided that he was going to head into the village and find himself a job, since he was already being accused of stealing one away from a hard working citizen anyway.
He stepped out into the hallway, pausing momentarily to lock the door behind him. When he turned to head down the hall, his eyes fell on someone he really hadn't expected to see; Cosette. His mind raced. She looked different, yet exactly the same. When he let his eyes travel away from her face, he saw why. She was pregnant. His throat tightened and he couldn't breathe. He also found that he couldn't move. Shock was keeping him frozen in place. Pregnant. How was that even possible? Well, he knew the mechanics of it. They had become, ah, well versed in the mechanics of it, but they had always been careful. He had made sure to take all the right precautions and -.
A thought struck him. He had no way of knowing if the baby was even his. He didn't know when she had been pulled from. For all he knew, she had moved on with someone else after he'd been arrested. Even though he knew that she wanted nothing to do with him (that much had been clear to him the one time he'd talked to her over the journals), the thought of her with someone else made Sirius sick. Even if she didn't know, or care, he still cared about her. Not that it would really matter, considering she thought he was guilty of betrayal and murder.
He cleared his throat, trying desperately to come up with something, anything to say to her. The words were all there, floating around in his head, but for some reason they didn't really want to connect to his mouth and come out into the world. Finally, he managed to stammer a weak, pathetic, "Hi."
