She hadn't expected him to follow her, but when he did she stopped and turned to him, listening. Daryn had no idea what she had said or done to set Tina off of this tirade against her. But his words hit hard and cut deep, and for some reason all she could do was just stand there and take it. In her mind, she'd made legitmate attempts to connect with him, to get close, and now that obvious mistake, along with all of her faults, was being tossed back into her face. And Tina seemed to be enjoying the process of cutting her down.
Daryn flinched when Tina tossed the keys in her direction but made no move to retrieve them. She took a few steps back from him and opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Her chest was tight and she couldn't breathe, her throat and eyes were burning. But it wasn't something she was doing to herself, it was the natural reaction to trying to hold back tears.
Taking a ragged breath, she kicked the keys back toward him and headed for the door, her voice shaky and barely audible. "Don't get into that car until you're sober."
Moving out into the snow, she closed the door quietly behind her and began walking toward where she thought the road was. She was not properly dressed for a long walk in the snow, but there was nothing to be done about that now. Daryn pulled on her gloves and buttoned her coat tighter. She then realized she'd forgotten her scarf inside. But there was no way in hell she was going back. She'd rather be cold and lost than continue down the road that conversation had unexpectedly gone.
