It was almost surreal, the way Daryn managed to hew so close to the bone of the issue with her flippancy. It was impressive, and scary, and Tina shifted uncomfortably form one foot to the other. The fact that she did so, that she seemed to hit the nail on the head about him time and time again, was making it scream in Tina's brain that she knew all about him and this was all an act, although to what end he couldn't fathom.
"Of course it's not worth it," he said, pouring some oil into the skillet as it heated up. "Have you ever opened up to someone and had it gone well? It doesn't happen. Because everything ends eventually and then you're back where you started, thinking why bother." He didn't look at her while he spoke, seeming too preoccupied with prep. "Or, more likely, people don't actually care. So you let it out and nobody catches it, they just step over it and ignore it, and you have to scoop it up yourself and carry on." Finally, he did glance her way, but briefly. "The fact that you have to wonder if it's worth it should tell you that history makes it clear; it isn't."
