Dodging the Metaphorical Bullet (Nine)
The sound that had awoken him had not been a pleasant one. At first Bruce figured it was just part of a dream considering how uneasily he slept in this strange world, in this strange bed. Not that this was the first time he had been swept up into a world not meant for him, but this one was far worse. At least the dinosaur-ridden atmosphere was predictable. Predictability lowered the chance for risk, which also lowered the chance that the Other Guy would sprout out unnecessarily. It was easier to fight something one was familiar with when the fortune pushed the tide that direction. But in this case it was like fighting in the darkness against something you could never truly see. He had fought aliens before, but still...that was not by choice. He had not gotten there until much later after the fighting had started and Bruce had never been one to intentionally throw himself into the line of fire with the first strike. No, he was willing to let a scene play out as far as it could, usually, before he got involved.

But that sound...

At first it sounded like a low humming, some noise that reminded him of a swarm of wasps defending their nest. A constant buzzing sound. Once he was awake and knew for sure he wasn't dreaming, Bruce pushed himself out of bed slowly with his head cocked toward the sound. What was that? The unknown was nagging at him because it was a familiar sound...something he could place, and as refreshing as that was it was far too close. It was inside the resort. Right outside the door.

Bruce tensed instantly. Slipping very quietly out of his bed, he pulled on what shoes he could find and grabbed hold of the tire iron he kept next to the bed on the night stand. It offered him little comfort but it was a better tool than what lay beneath the surface of his skin. And it was a much safer alternative. Not that it would fair against a swarm of insects but it was better than nothing at all.

The door to his room opened slowly and when he stepped out into the hallway he saw nothing. The noise had gone as quickly as it had come. That was funny. And unsettling. Not bothering to close the door as he was too caught up in the moment, Bruce tightened his grip on the metal bar in his hand and crept slowly down the hallway. A turn into the next corridor and there was the source of the noise. Giant bees. Almost as large as a basketball and they hovered in a swarm mid-way down the hallway. His eyes widened and he stopped dead in his tracks.

Suddenly a tire iron seemed not so bad a weapon of he could avoid a stinger or two. But it was risky changing in the resort. Too risky. There were too many people that could be sleeping and he had the potential to tear down the entire building in a matter of carefree moments. No, he couldn't change here. He had to find a place to lay low.

A careful step backward, Bruce tried not to make a sound. But then his foot stepped on shards of a broken urn that lay on the floor and instantly the swarm was turning and heading straight for him. Bruce winced and lifted the metal bar, batting at one of the giant insects as it flew straight at him stinger first. This was not a good day to be a man or a bee. One went to the floor, twitching lifelessly. But that seemed to irritate the swarm even more.

Dropping his weapon, Bruce turned and fled back the way he had come. He bypassed the open door to his own room and raced around fallen debris and through corridors. His heart raced as he ran, and he could already feel he energy surging through him that couldn't be mistaken for adrenaline. He only wished it was that tame. The buzzing was growing closer, he could tell, but he didn't look back. Nor could he stop despite the burn in his lungs.

Just as he turned the corner he saw it. The big, beautiful blue police call box. The TARDIS. It was hanging out there as if it were waiting for him and without a moment to spare Bruce rushed the doors, kicked them open and slammed them shut behind himself. His brown eyes burned with neon green and he pressed himself hard against the door in efforts to keep the bees out as well as to catch his breath.

What a hell of a way to wake up.

It wasn't that the Doctor was expecting anyone, per se.

It was that there was nothing in his "room" to make it his. The TARDIS was his room. So he'd moved it out of there. The time circuits were damaged but the ship was still capable of basic locomotion.

When the TARDIS door opened, The Doctor looked up from his research, left the library where he sat, and without looking at the person who had barged in, with a level voice, announced "Do be careful with my ship. She's the only one I've got."

The TARDIS had allowed this man to enter. Her doors were impregnable

Bruce leaned forward some, doubled over as he tried to catch his breath. He squinted his eyes shut, palms flat against his knees as he breathed in and out heavily. He had to get his heart rate under control, his breathing...he could still hear the swarm but much more faint than before. That was helping him maintain some semblance of control over himself.

Finally able to catch his breath, the scientist lifted himself back up and his eyes open, a beautiful, normal brown instead of that toxic neon green, and he looked at the man that had addressed him. "I...uh, sorry..." Bruce turned to look over his shoulder at the door, a hand lifting to point behind himself as he rotated his attention once more to the man, "Killer bees. A whole swarm. The resort is under attack or something."

Instantly he was worried about Natasha, but she had always been the type to overcome about anything and she was resourceful enough to either lay low or defend herself. Bruce lowered his hand to his side and stepped sheepishly away from the door, "I didn't mean to cause the TARDIS any harm. Really. I was just trying to stay alive. I'm Bruce." If this guy was here, which he seemed perfectly content in being, Bruce hunched he was the one that ran the place. But he didn't look anything like The Doctor that Bruce was familiar with. The last couple, one with a bow tie and the other tall and slender, bore no resemblance.

Killer bees?

The Doctor furrowed his brow but was smiling very slightly. That was fascinating! He wanted to go outside!

But this new person was not quite alright, not yet. And the Doctor knew if he suggested that they go back out and join the fray there was going to be some kind of problem, a human one involving fear or bee hatred.

"Hello, Bruce," the Doctor said. "I'm the Doctor." He grinned. "Apologies for my glee. You see, to me, all of this is completely interesting."

And Rose said he didn't know how to be nice to people.

He softened his face and his smile. "You don't seem all that shocked by the TARDIS. Have you been here before?"

Before Bruce could answer, the Voice Interface System activated. In a moment, a hologram of Rose Tyler stood there, arms crossed. "Doctor, your visitor puts you and us in danger," it said.

The Doctor regarded Bruce with a tilted head.

"He does?"

The guy was smiling.

Smiling about killer bees. Strange enough, Bruce was just as fascinated by them as this guy was.

"The Doctor?" Bruce inquired. That was confusing. And it made sense all at the same time which was even more confusing. "You're not The Doctor that I know."

"It isinteresting until they're chasing you..." Bruce replied, nodding. Even still they were fascinating. He blamed the scientist part of himself for that. A glance about the TARDIS and Bruce nodded before the hologram of Rose breathed out the danger.

Frowning, Bruce straightened. "I can leave if you want, I don't want to put you in danger." He was not denying what the TARDIS knew. "Sorry, Rose." He had known Rose Tyler from the island before. Not personally, but he knew her enough to put her face with her name. He waited to be cast out by this version of The Doctor.

You're not the Doctor that I know.

The Doctor stiffened, and his jawline hardened. He did not wish to know too much about his other selves, the ones that hadn't come yet. Knowing too much was bad, even if he might be a little bit interested.

Sorry, Rose.

"I am not Rose," the Voice Interface System said. "I am a Voice Interface System."

But the damage was already done. Bruce Banner had said the magic word, and now, the Timelord could focus on nothing else. He had no one to talk him down like Bruce did when such things happened to him, when he saw red.

"What do you know about Rose Tyler?" He crossed his arms over his chest. "Do you know where she's gone?" He took a few steps toward Bruce and took the Sonic Screwdriver out, holding it up.

"Why does my ship think you're so dangerous? Let's find out, shall we?" He waved the Sonic at Bruce, waiting to see what it did.

A voice interface system.

"Oh, sorry..." Bruce began, eyes slipping from Rose...or well what looked like Rose back to the man claiming to be The Doctor. The Doctor didn't look very happy by the way his jaw was set and the narrowing of his eyes. Bruce didn't like the way things had turned suddenly and was curious about it though he would not let himself dig deeper this hole he was already standing in.

"Rose was one of the people stranded on an island in the world that I came from before being abducted and brought here," Bruce explained calmly, lifting his hands up in a defensive manner, palms out. "That's where I knew the version of The Doctor and how I know the TARDIS. The island was full of dinosaurs, all of us were taking refuge inside the TARDIS." It might have seemed outlandish to anyone else but Bruce suspected that The Doctor had probably seen far worse.

"I'm not sure if she's here, I don't think anyone that I knew came with me. It was only me that ended up here..." And then The Doctor pulled out the Sonic screwdriver. This was not going the way Bruce had originally intended it to.

The scientist frowned and straightened his frame though he did not lower his palms. "I don't recommend tempting me, Doctor. It's in the best interest of yourself and your ship to back down." Bruce kept his voice calm but firm, however the faintest flecks of green began to surface in the brown of his eyes, as if to further strengthen the warning. "You won't like me when I'm angry."

To be fair, Nine rarely looked happy.

He listened to what Bruce said, and his eyebrows drew together. The version of the doctor I know...

In the interest of him and his ship to back down? The Doctor snorted. He couldn't help it. He could no sooner control the TARDIS and what she did than he could control the actions of any other person. She was her own being, and very strong-minded.

Not unlike the woman she was using to represent herself now.

He kept right on scanning, holding the sonic first at Bruce's head height, then waving it down toward his ankles. No one much liked the Doctor when he was angry, either. Entire worlds got destroyed. He kept his jaw set and said nothing, focused on what results he might get here.

And results there were.

You won't like me when I'm angry.

"Why, what happens?" His eyebrow arched as he stood up from Bruce's shoe. "Does it perhaps have something to do with the truly absurd amount of radiation in your blood stream?"

He tucked the sonic back into his pocket, and then both hands in their respective pockets. "My ship views you as a threat because you can harm her and she is already harmed. Our captors have disabled certain functions of hers. No one wishes to tempt you, Bruce. But maybe we can help you."

Bruce blinked as The Doctor waved the device over him. He didn't like it, he felt as if he were being intruded on and feeling naked and exposed was not a very good feeling. But he supposed that was one of the risks that came with a ship like the TARDIS and being within the presence of the time traveller. But that didn't mean he had to enjoy the surveying or the knowledge of the results.

Slowly, keeping his eyes on The Doctor, Bruce lowered his hands and squared his shoulders. "It might have something to do with exactly that," the scientist replied softly, but not unkindly. The words were said more with a sense of defeat than anything.

"I can promise that as long as neither of you pose a threat to me, nobody will get hurt. It seems like a lot to ask, actually, based on being in a world full of monsters. The atmosphere here, though, seems like it can be a bit better controlled." Which was a good thing in itself. "What do you mean you can help?" Instantly curious, Bruce was eager to know what The Doctor might be able to do. The safest request was a containment unit, but they didn't have that luxury here.

... it might have something to do with exactly that.

The Doctor sighed. "I'm very sorry to hear that."

He knew what radiation was to human beings. Bruce was lucky to be alive.

"Well, the TARDIS is no threat. If anything, she's your best ally. She's safer than houses. And as it turns out, walls. I think her concern is for her power core and that no further damage be caused to her circuitry. But she has a full library and a lot of very calming things to read. Even has a pool."

He beamed. The Voice Interface System disappeared.

What do you mean you can help?

"Well, I don't know that I can just yet, but I would like to try. I'm an alien, Bruce. I have different technology than you've encountered before--even if you met another version of me, he didn't have all the same stuff I do. It doesn't work that way, really. I'm a Doctor. I'm 900 years old, and I like to keep things from other cultures I find helpful."

He let that sit there.

"Would you allow me to study you a little bit? Take some blood, things like that?"

He paused.

"What does happen to you when you're angry?"

Bruce knew about the pool already, and the library and the storage rooms...he knew the TARDIS could be a sturdy shelter, it was basically a living being. His experience on the time machine space ship was advanced, to a point. He had been trying to assist The Doctor and the Metacrisis in repairing it, actually. But they had never reached that exact point where his services and knowledge were needed.

"Thank you," Bruce replied gently. He took a hard breath, then, and tried to absorb everything that had happened to lead up to this point.

He couldn't help the fact that his mouth had gone dry at the request to be studied; Bruce had been running every moment of every day since the accident from people exactly like The Doctor, those that wanted to open him up and test him.

But if it would keep everyone safe, keep Natasha safe....

"Sure, I guess you can try." It wouldn't hurt, "But I hope you know exactly what you're getting into." It wasn't a harsh warning, he just didn't need more guilt on his already heavy conscience. Gamma radiation exposure was no laughing matter, a heavy dose could poison and bring on radiation sickness. Bruce was a walking gamma nightmare.

"I-uh," Bruce began, trying to combat the dryness of his mouth and throat, "...turn into a seven foot tall, green rage monster."

The Doctor raised his eyebrows. It sounded to him like he was being underestimated, and that was nonsense. No one should underestimate a timelord.

I turn into a seven foot tall green rage monster.

Oh.

Well, that explained why the TARDIS had thrown up her holographic warning system. She was afraid that that rage monster would hurt her more. The Doctor would not have that. He also felt it unlikely.

He did manage not to bounce gleefully or call this 'fantastic,' but just barely. The Doctor was fascinated.

"You control yourself very well," he said. "Your eyes were different when you came in here. That how it starts, yeah?"

Bruce managed a small smile, one that felt false. His mouth was still too dry so he nodded in response. Control was probably the the least of his ability....and he might not have given himself enough credit. He had been working on maintaining the outbreaks. So far he had done an okay job.

Natasha helped with stability, she had the lullaby ability that could soothe the beast when it was running loose. That was the only fallback Bruce had and even that wasn't a guarantee. It put Nat in danger.

"That's one of the signs, yeah," Bruce managed. He breathed hard and cast another glance around the TARDIS. It was familiar and that was calming. He could stay there forever knowing what things lay within it.

The Doctor knew a bit about pop culture and comic books, and if he really thought for a moment about it, he might realize who exactly this was. But he was too fascinated by the science of it, and hadn't read too many Marvel comics.

He watched Bruce's eyes looking around the ship. "Come with me," the Doctor said.

He walked past the screen displays and control room and out a door, down a corridor.

Back here, there was a lab. There were things on glowing screens, here, too--notably, there were notes about a certain vampiress that had since gone missing. A microscope with slides of her blood and tissue, painstaking labeled and diagrammed, was on the table that was obviously a workstation. Books were everywhere, and more than that, artifacts.

There were things under glass all over the room with notes about what they were and their culture of origin.

"Did you ever meet Phaedra? If she hasn't gone missing, and unfortunately I suspect she has, you two would have a lot in common. She is the only other person among us I've studied, and for the same reasons. I wanted to help her."

The Doctor pressed a button, and the glowing screen above the microscope filled up with a large image of her blood on the slide. A scientist would know that it was not human blood. More interestingly, it was still moving, still alive, even though the sample was months old. The cells were thriving. The Doctor nodded his chin toward the screen. "What do you see up there?"

Bruce moved from the doorway and followed eagerly after The Doctor. He was anxious, curious and afraid all at the same time. The Other Guy didn't like to be poked and prodded, and the risk was always high that the experiment could backfire and that Bruce really would do more harm than good to both the Doctor and the TARDIS itself. Neither of which he wanted at all.

The lab itself was intriguing. He felt a compulsion to examine every sample to the smallest detail and to study every part of what was out on display. The meticulous detail didn't fall to a blind eye, Bruce actually appreciated the care and delicacy in which all of the painstaking effort was taken. It spoke volumes to him about The Doctor's character when it came to examining species.

"Phaedra?" Bruce inquired. He didn't know anyone by that name. "Was it successful?" He very badly wanted to know that there had been success in aiding someone like him. But there was no one else like him.

At the blood sample, Bruce smiled like a child trapped in a candy store. "It's a living cellular specimen. Not human, the structure is incorrect for to be human..." It might possibly have been human in origin at one point but it wasn't that way at present. "Why?"

The TARDIS was watchful. The deeper Bruce moved into the ship, the more she paid attention.

Was it successful?

"I didn't get much of a chance to see," the Doctor said. "I haven't seen her on this planet yet. And on our last one, her abilities were somewhat different."

The sun on the dinosaur planet had not hurt her the way sunlight should, so the study had begun.

The doctor nodded at Bruce's observations. "Correct. Not human, but was, once. Phaedra Romani is a vampire, and that blood sample is months old."

He watched for a reaction, for what he was saying to register. The blood on the slide was keeping itself alive, healing itself, preventing cells from dying off.

The Doctor knew that Phaedra's blood could fix human cuts and diseases--most of them, really. The healing ability her body had was phenomenal, even if it did come from some kind of 'magic' humans didn't understand. The Doctor himself didn't fully understand it, but he was getting there, based on what he knew of the woman's origins.

"I have a lot of theories on what might help you, but I won't know for sure until I can get a look at you in the same way," he said, raising an eyebrow and nodding toward the screen. "But I do suspect that, even in absentia, Ms. Romani may be able to help you a great deal."

Bruce nodded only a touch disappointed. Not being able to see an experiment through was disheartening. But perhaps this was the second chance at having those observations and test the theories. And if the samples could potentially help others....well, it only seemed like the right thing to do.

Vampire. Bruce wasn't exactly familiar with vampires. He knew them only from movies and television, books and other media like art. To know that he was looking at a sample of the genetics of a vampire, and that it was still viable even after so long...it was exhilarating to say the least. He felt breathless for a moment.

"I would appreciate her help if she is able to give it. I'll do what I can, whatever you need."

The Doctor pictured Phaedra for a second. There was a sketch of her on the table, actually, mostly because he was trying to work out something about how her blood changed her eyes.

It changed so many things.

This one tiny woman--and she was very slight, for all her power--was still alive after centuries and might be able to help someone with severe radiation problems. It was a little bit funny that all of that could come from something so lethal.

The Doctor couldn't say that he was sure Phaedra would love to help. In fact, he suspected it was possible she would refuse, at least until she knew Bruce better. But she was missing, and her blood was here. The TARDIS and all of the Doctor's knowledge was here. And the Doctor was growing quite tired of losing people, in any capacity.

He would prefer not to lose Bruce to the large green monster he described.

"Well, as I've said I'd like to take a look at you a bit under that microscope. It that might cause your alter ego to flip my table, you may wish to take a blood sample yourself."

On the table, near the samples belonging to Phaedra, there were empty vials and everything that would be needed for this. And in a glass cabinet under the table, there were some marked vials--some of which glowed.

There were a great number of things here that could help, but the Doctor needed that jumping off point.

"How did it happen? The radiation?"

Bruce nodded. "I can take the samples, it might be better for all of us that way. Even if you and I do become friends, I still can't guarantee that you or the TARDIS would be safe." He felt the warning was necessary. It was the same thing for anyone he crossed paths with and why he never let himself get close to anyone at all. He couldn't live with the guilt of killing someone he loved by accident, or even on purpose, and not remembering it when he awoke from the exhaustion.

"I was working on a top secret mission for the government agency that was curious about amping up their manpower. Literally. We were using this serum stuff, I was infusing it with gamma radiation to study the effects. Something went wrong when I tested it, the dosage was exactly right but the radiation and the serum..." Bruce explained, making a face, "Nobody made it out except for me." He knew because that was what all of the reports said, what all of the papers said. He had destroyed so much in those first moments, lives included.

"I'd prefer not to keep talking about it," Bruce said softly. He wanted to run from that day for as long as his legs could carry him in the opposite direction.

The Doctor had a measure of experience with being alone in order to not hurt others. He understood that very well.

"You don't need to keep talking about it," the Doctor said. "But any information you might want to pass me about that experiment would be a great help to helping you. Perhaps write it, or tell me another time."

His face was respectfully grave. Bruce had just told him men had died. The Doctor had some experience with that, too.

Considering the strange armageddon going on outside the TARDIS, it would be better for Bruce to take and give those samples here and now, but he would not push.

Bruce was glad he didn't have to talk more about it just then. He would, he would come around and tell The Doctor eventually. The memories were hard enough, having to relive it through an in-depth discussion was worse. Knowing he was responsible for all of those lives...something that could have been prevented...

"Eventually. I will tell you when the time is right, but I can't right now." He sighed heavily.

Gathering himself, the scientist nodded, "I'm not sure if waiting to take the samples is a good idea. I don't know if we will get another chance with all off the stuff happening outside to do it if we don't do it now."
