Mary's laughter lifted his heart. It was a little strange to think about how much she meant to him, to his life. And yeah, there was a little bit of jealousy there that she'd woken up with a god. He couldn't compete with that. But she also didn't seem very interested in the guy, which made it easier to let go of that feeling.
He couldn't lie to her. He'd promised that he wouldn't. After everything they'd been through, all the work they'd put in to right the wrong that the future version of himself had done, Johnny couldn't have said false words to Mary if his life depended on it.
So as much as he might have wanted to tell her that they'd find a way, that they'd get out somehow, he just couldn't. "No. I don't think we're getting out of here until they're done with us."
It hurt him. Knowing that he could do nothing to save her from these aliens. Not that she needed saving. Mary wasn't the type. The one time she'd had to be rescued had been a fluke. A horrible, horrible fluke. That didn't mean he wouldn't try to.
Johnny stood up and moved closer. It was still a little tentative between them, and he wasn't sure where his boundaries were yet. Just because they'd been intimate in her future didn't mean that he could assume that level of familiarity now. But he knelt before her and reached to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
"If there was a way, we'd find it. But I think it's a waste of energy."
