Dinner passed more quickly than she would have liked. There were a few reasons why Eleni was drawn to Max and one of those was definitely that they didn't ever run out of things to talk about. It was almost as effective at keeping her mind off losing Isaac as working on her suit had been. And that was saying something.
Once dinner was over, she led him to a building that was just a few doors down. It was some sort of office building, though she didn't care too much about anything but the lab in the basement. The key had been among her belongings when she'd arrived here, in an envelope with the address and room number clearly marked on it. Of course, she'd been surprised to find everything she'd worked on so far in that lab, but she was beginning to just accept things as they happened with this abduction.
Excitement mingled with nerves as they made their way down the stairs. Eleni's hand gripped Max's with a warm squeeze. She didn't usually show anyone the things that she built. Except sometimes her dad. He usually had advice or ideas on how to improve things. But even then, she didn't always want to show him because it was hard to work her ass off on something and know that she'd never really measure up to the things that her dad could build.
She stopped once she'd unlocked the door and looked up at him.
"It's still a work in progress," she warned. "Even once it's functional, there are a lot of tweaks and upgrades that I need to make."
It was her way of trying to lower expectations, if that was possible. Maybe it was silly how much she cared about what some guy thought about a hunk of metal, but that hunk of metal was something she'd poured her heart and soul into in a way.
