Clark wasn't one to turn down an invitation, even if he did feel out of place at balls and other social affairs. But the invitation had seemed as much like an order as anything and so he decided to go. The formal wear for the time period was a bit ruffly for his tastes, but he supposed that it was best to blend in.
He kept to the side for awhile and tried to avoid the receiving line for the princess. He didn't plan to stay on this planet and didn't think it fair to lead anyone on, assuming that she was interested in him. Besides, his heart already belonged to someone else. Even if that someone didn't want to give 'Clark Kent' the time of day.
Clark simply contented himself with watching until he picked up on something-or someone unusual. He could hear every heartbeat in the room except hers. He wasn't sure how she was up and walking around like this, but she was. He didn't know if she was a threat or something else, but he also knew that he couldn't leave that mystery alone. So he crossed the room and gave the woman a small bow.
