Tea for one (Simon/Evan log)
It wasn't hard for Evan to find where the tea was, once he decided that he needed to find it. And he did. He felt bad for the way things had gone with Niks. It seemed as if every time they talked, something about Simon would get in the way of everything. Now, to top that off and/or make it all worse, now she smelled like a fairy herself. It might be a thing that he was able to get used to, but right at that moment, all it did was make him think of a certain man he didn't like. Doubly didn't like, given what he'd done without permission.
The tea wouldn't really be much of an apology, Evan knew. There were things in this world that even tea wouldn't take care of. Perhaps it would soothe Niks some, and maybe make her a little happy, and that was enough for the time being.
There was an elevator that took him down to the second floor, which opened up into a sitting room. Or a common area. Or a cafeteria. Or maybe it was all three? He could see a couple people sitting around with food, and a spot that had more comfortable chairs. Social Round Up? No, that just made it sound like a rodeo, which brought unpleasant memory flashes of cattle prods and hog tying.
Niks might like it down here, with all the watching she could do. Not particularly people. More like alien watching. But were aliens people too? It was hard to see their captors in the same league as anybody else.
---
Simon had intended to do some watching himself. He was interested in the creatures that had managed to wrangle him away from the Tower, without his consent or even knowledge. He imagined that others were also interested in them as well. He just hadn't counted on running into Evan so soon. And it was another near collision when they happened upon one another.
"We've really got to stop meeting like this, puppy." Simon sneered. He was in no mood for the dog. Not after that confrontation with Niks. He disliked the idea of even feigning civility for her sake, though he'd do it. Too much had passed for him to give up on her now. She was his, she would always be his.
---
"You know what? Fuck you, Simon." The words came out unexpectedly. Evan discovered that he actually wasn't afraid of the fairy anymore. He didn't care what powers were there. Oh, he still respected them. But fear? No. It was gone. He suspected it had something to do with the wolf. Wolves weren't typically afraid of things that hadn't already harmed them, and Simon had never laid a single finger on him. Words had been exchanged, and that was it.
"By the way, you calling me that? Obviously makes sense now. You knew. Why? How did you know? Did you convince the aliens to let something happen to me?"
---
"No thank you." Simon said in a snotty voice toward the idea of sexual congress with Evan Vang. As if that would ever even be an option. Simon didn't care if Evan was the last being on the planet, Simon would become staunchly celibate.
The questions, though. Those were interesting. He'd not expected those. A smile crossed his features.
"I knew, because it's what you've always been. It's in your blood. In your DNA. I'm quite surprised, in all honesty, that you haven't some family lore. Your neat little trick with finding things wasn't the only reason the Tower wanted you. They wanted to keep track of you, too. See if your little secret would pop out at any time. I didn't have a thing to do with it, which makes it a safe bet that the aliens had an idea of it as well when they decided to put you in our number. You'll have to talk to them to know what was done, but I suspect it was much like what I did for Niklas. Unlocked you from the inside out. Now you're what you're supposed to be, dog."
---
"TO Niks," Evan emphasized. "What you did TO Niks. You didn't ask. You gave her no choice, no options. You just did what you wanted to do, like always. Don't even pretend that you had her best interests at heart. You're selfish."
---
"Oh, but I did." Simon raised a brow. Such a defiant pup Evan had become. "As she was, Niklas wasn't whole. I gave her a thing that she's been missing all of her life. I gave her the piece of herself that helps everything else make sense. A gift. She is now all she should be.
"You've seen her, doesn't she seem happier? More at peace? Like she actually is a part of the world now, instead of just studying it?"
---
"You didn't ask!" That was Evan's sticking point. "You should have let her know! Just like I didn't ask for what was done to me. You think I'm happy as I am now? That's fucking stupid. I was happy as I was. I liked my life. I didn't need to be the ... the... fucking object of an experiment. This doesn't make me whole, this makes me something I've never been!"
He was taking it out on Simon, because he couldn't take it out on the aliens. He had no idea what they'd done, or which had done it. He didn't want to wander around yelling at just anybody. The sad thing was, he actually felt bad for yelling at the fairy. He hadn't had a hand in this. That much was clear.
"You can't just play with people. She's got to have the facts before hand."
---
"And tell her what? That she's faekin? What would she say then? Prove it. The only way I had to prove it was to do what I did. I have no regrets. She doesn't either, I'm sure. She may be mad at me, but she's going to have a long while to get over that."
Simon waved a dismissive hand. "You don't think you're whole because you haven't settled in yet. Give it time, and you'll realize that you feel like you've never lived prior to what was done to you. This thing you are, it is you. Not some curse or fairy story. You're the real deal. Born.
"And don't you go thinking that you can turn Niklas against me, either. I understand her now better than you ever will."
---
Evan didn't like to think that the fairy was right, and so he railed against the idea that he would ever do more than accept the facts of what his life was now. He would never feel like what he was was normal. Not now, not in a hundred years, if the aliens were to be believed.
He would, instead, focus on what Simon had just said about Niks.
"Are you kidding me? You're talking about her like she's property. She's not yours, Simon. Nor is she mine. If anything, more than ever, she's her own person."
---
"I've said nothing about owning her, dog. I said understanding her. She is fairy, and you are not. You can't possibly understand what she sees, how she's connected to everything, you can't help her when she doesn't have an answer. You can't guide her. You haven't lived as long as I have, so you can't tell her how it will feel to do so."
The fairy lifted a brow. "Granted, since you've been manipulated, you aren't some pathetic human anymore. Which does elevate you somewhat. I still don't like you, but you aren't a fragile, short lived insect now."
---
Evan hated it, but the fairy was right. He didn't understand most of what Simon could. But he did have one advantage. He shared with Niks the fact of having grown up and been one way, and suddenly being forced into something else. He shared with her the idea that neither one of them had been asked, or informed, or coached. Neither of them had even known. They'd both thought they were human. Perhaps not normal humans, but human nonetheless.
That was something the fairy wouldn't ever be able to rip from him.
"Wait." he stopped. "What do you mean?"
---
"Ta, Evan." Simon smiled. He knew it would be worse for the boy if he used that actual name that rarely graced his lips. He lifted a hand as he walked away, his back turned to the dog. "Do take Niklas her tea. Good boy."
