"A cousin. She helped. Voodoo and some spell work, but that's it. My mom was really powerful. She could do things that nobody else in the family could. Everybody talks about the witches in the family but they talk about her like she was this otherworldly thing."
She shrugged. She glanced at Nanshe, who seemed very beautiful and peaceful. They seemed happy. Annabelle supposed gods should be happy or something was wrong with the whole balance of power.
"My dad didn't want me to get tangled up like she did. I tried to respect that. Obviously I went behind his back and learned a little but I never wanted to push it."
