"From what Mary has told me, I had no idea. Have no idea." He frowned and got quiet for a beat. "Whichever. She said that she never introduces me to any of her family, or even talks about them. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have stalked you for sixty years just so I could date your kid. That's creepy."
Johnny didn't really think it was very less creepy to be as old as he was when he did date her. He didn't know what made it okay, but clearly something did. He still felt like a dirty old man thinking about it.
"I don't know if she told you the whole story, but it's not like I meet her and jump into bed with her. She's the first person I allow into my life after - as you said - decades. Decades of being alone. I'm guessing that something happens for me to realize that nothing about me is going to change, and I pull away from even you, to keep both of us safe. Something about Mary broke through whatever walls I constructed. I feel it here, too."
He wasn't about to share all of it, not right now. Not in the hallway. But maybe that would be enough for Jo.
"I hope you do." Johnny said honestly. "I don't want to hurt anyone who doesn't deserve it, especially not her, you, or anyone in your family. Given the history I know, I don't think there will be any brain eating or sudden desires for flesh, but it's good to know that if there is, you'll put me down."
