He happily took the water and the leaf. Johnny didn't need Mary to explain to him what to do. He'd used such plants before. Though it was done while camping voluntarily, and not because an alien had decided to plop him onto a planet with no toothbrushes.
Johnny took a small sip of water and then used the leaf to scrub off his teeth. It wasn't a real cleaning, but the film would be gone and he'd feel better about it. Then he placed the leaf between his back teeth and chewed. It was a lovely flavor.
"I guess we know now that destroying the heart does nothing permanent." Johnny tried to smile, but the implications of that fact kept it from being much more than a movement of his lips. If he couldn't die that way, did that mean that he couldn't die any other way? What if he got shot in the head? What if somebody took his head clean off? Not that he was going to willingly experiment with those things.
With the leaf gone, Johnny drank more water. It got rid of the remnants and satisfied the need he was feeling for liquids. It was cool, and very fresh. Which surprised him almost as much as being alive did.
"So... you'll have to tell me where the hell we are now."
