Max had smiled slightly. He knew eventually he'd get answers, if only to satisfy his own curiosity. For now though, he'd let it be. He had a case to work, and it wouldn't happen if he focused on the wrong thing.
Once inside the room, Max let the moll remove his coat, his jacket, and even loosen his tie. He didn't let her touch the hat, and he kept a very close eye on the trench coat. He didn't let her touch the gun he was wearing, and he didn't take it off.
It took twenty minutes to get a few answers, and it took five more before he heard a noise that didn't sound right coming through the wall.
"Dammit. I knew he'd get too excited. Stay here, honey. Be right back." Max didn't have much in the way of lipstick marks. Somehow he'd gotten her talking, and she didn't seem to mind that all he wanted was to rub her feet - it took all kinds as far as she was concerned.
A quick check on Johnny and his slip of a hostess told him just how uncomfortable Johnny was about all this. Rather than put Johnny and the girl through more, Max went for plan B. Telling Johnny to walk it off, and showing the thin tomato into the room with her friend, he came back to add softly that Johnny should look for a list of previous working girls and come get him five minutes before their hour was up.
When the girls were together, he settled in for the harder questioning. There had been something said in an off hand way, and he wanted to follow up in questions. He didn't go into the more official way of things, but he didn't go back to rubbing any feet either.
