Jo stared. She barely noticed the glass at first but took a large swallow when she dud, grateful for the drink.
"You kissed her she repeated flatly. She might have bern edging a little bit on what Johnny would call 'mom voice.'
"Do you know how Mary and I are related?" she wondered out loud.
She didn't wait for an answer. Something abput how miserable Johnny looked softened her reaction. And the realization that something could have happened to Mary was now sinking in.
"She's been crazy about you at least since Electric City. It was obvious yesterday that she has it bad. Sometimes the scariest thing is getting something you want with someone you have feelings for. That's when you're at your most vulnerable and if she's anything like me, it probably spooked her a bit."
She felt responsible in a way. After all, Mary probably had inherited some of her character flaws. For some reason, she felt it important that he realize that she didn't walk out because of him. Or at least, Jo didn't think she had. Which brought her back to the matter at hand.
"She was supposed to meet me today. We need to look for her."
That was obvious, wasn't it? The time to wait and hope that Mary would come back on her own had passed. Jo wasn't panicking, but she was ready to take action and there was an edge of worry in her voice.
