Now that pushed her too far. Mary took her hand back and stepped away. She was one step closer to the door. Johnny could be stubborn, but so could she. And the harder she was pushed, the more she went in the opposite direction. There were tears in her eyes that were only partly out of frustration.
“Probably about as relieved as I was to find you,” she replied, her voice rising a little bit. She wasn’t going to play the ‘who cares more’ game. She just wasn’t. “Are you saying it’s now or never? Because all I’m asking is that you give me 6 hours to adjust here. I just need that time. It’s not that I doubt what you’re saying, but that I’ve spent the last six months trying to keep my emotions in check and once that dam’s gone, it’s gone.”
She turned around and yanked the door knob open.
“You can’t expect me to keep up with the 180 here. Ever since we went to that movie, you’ve been sullen and withdrawn and I thought you wanted me to move out.” She shook her head. “I think we both just need some time to think about this. I’ll be back tomorrow. If this is more than just a passing impulse, hopefully you’ll be here.”
