"She told us that she was a she," Mary said. "But no, I couldn't tell what gender just from looking at the alien."
Mary grimaced and nod.
"Yeah, I'd say that about sums it up. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news."
That last part fell flat in her opinion because really, calling this whole thing 'bad news' was sort of flip. The trouble was, she didn't have words in any language that she knew to really describe how much she knew it had to be to take in.
"Do you need another drink?" she asked gently.
It was the best comfort she could offer at the moment. It was certainly what she had wanted when she was on the receiving end of the news.
