"I'll settle that part now." Lucifer assured her. He reached into the front pocket of his coat and withdrew the billfold there. He opened it up and looked at the money within. He'd used the same tactics to get cash as he had to get the car, and the apartment he now occupied. It would take nothing for him to get more of it. But he also knew that he couldn't be too showy. She'd wonder. He turned to glance at the tables that Mary had visited while he waited, and tallied up the amount. Then withdrew two crisp ten dollar bills and a five - sporting the faces of Rita Hayworth and Rex Harrison, respectively - and set them on the table. It was more than enough to cover all the drinks and all the tips. Just like he'd promised her.
Once that was done, he stood and moved to pull a chair out so that she could sit at the table with him. If he hadn't been who he was, he might have seen a good deal of trouble for even talking to this woman, as it was, nobody seemed to mind.
Lucifer returned to his own seat and picked up the glass that she'd put down. He tasted the brandy and smiled. It was quite good. The locals really knew their stuff.
