Johnny waited until she was back before he started to even get the drink ready for the stranger. He wanted as much time as he could get without it looking weird. He didn't even get the glass out or fetch the bottle. He made himself busy with somebody else at the bar, which gave him enough time to have Mary standing and waiting for a minute until he was done.
Perfect.
"Listen." he said, getting a glass out and putting a polish on it to make sure there were no spots. He did it for all the customers. Mostly because he never liked to drink out of dirty glasses, even if it was just calcium from water. "Just be careful, okay? I mean, I know you're in a spot surrounded by a lot of people, and it seems like there isn't a lot he could do. But we both know what kind of fucked up shit is out there."
Johnny got the right bottle and poured out the drink, giving it a little more than he would a regular customer. If the guy was new to all of this, he would appreciate the extra.
"There's just something about that guy..." He knew how it must sound. "Not because of how he looks. He just... it's like... I can't explain it. There's something."
He slid the completed drink to Mary, no tray. He kept his eyes on her, waiting for her to promise.
