Johnny wrapped an arm around Mary's shoulders, and he realized that it wasn't all part of the show. Yes, it completed the picture. But he also wanted to hold her tight. He wanted her close.
He was really going to have to figure himself out before he made Mary upset. He was treading dangerous waters, and he didn't want to play with her emotions or give her any false hopes. Yet he couldn't deny that he felt more connected with her than maybe he had a right to.
Johnny held a hand out for Harry to shake. "Thanks, a lot. You're a good man."
"Nah." Harry smiled. "Just don't steal from me, keep my customers happy, and we're good. You guys can start tomorrow."
He took a ring of keys from his pocket and slid one off, putting it into Johnny's hand after their handshake.
"The door next to the bar is for the apartments upstairs. You find the basement door just around back. It's solidly made, so don't worry about the fact it's in an alley. I even installed a light out there you can turn on in case you have to go out at night. The appliances aren't great, the kinds a bachelor would have. All mismatched and whatever, too." Harry was smiling. "Couch is damned ugly. Enjoy. I gotta get back."
"Thanks." Johnny said again, then started walking Mary back toward the front door, not letting go just yet.
