Speaking of things that they weren't talking about... There was a little jolt of surprise at the action. Mary stiffened, unsure of what to do at first. It didn't take long before she relaxed into Johnny's shoulder. They were certainly engaged in some sort of dance lately. The trouble was, she didn't know the steps and she wasn't sure who was supposed to be leading. She thought that he might be as confused as she was, if not more, but that wasn't much of a comfort.
She curled into him and let her eyes close, breathing in the familiar scent that was unmistakably Johnny. Slowly, her arm came to rest around his midsection as she started to dismiss some of the thoughts chasing themselves around in her brain and simply reveled in the security that she felt at being cuddled up like this.
"Night," she murmured, her tongue already very heavy as the exhaustion from the events of the day caught up to her all at once.
Johnny's promise was kept throughout the night and they took turns waking each other up and attempting to help the other one get comfortable for sleep. Mary couldn't say that sleeping on a park bench was the best sleep she'd ever gotten, but all things considered, she'd had worse nights.
When the city around them started waking up, it was back to Johnny's turn for watch so Mary was curled up asleep on his shoulder, all pretenses now gone and her arms wrapped tightly around him.
