The grin looked a little too familiar, though Mary hadn't seen that particular look since her return to the past. She brushed it off as wishful thinking. She'd made her peace with the fact that she wouldn't get back to her version of Johnny. She'd even made her peace with the fact that this version probably needed a friend more than any of the other things that she'd had with the Johnny of her time.
She accepted the knife with a soft laugh and deftly used it to make her sandwich. She had plenty of experience with knives this size and so she seemed just as at home with it as one might with a butter knife.
Once she'd finished, she handed the knife over to Johnny, hilt first.
"Waitressing. Good to know I've got a bright future here," she said lightly. "It could work though. That's the sort of job that usually doesn't ask many questions."
She leaned over just enough to bump her shoulder against his and then rested against the back of the bench.
"So, we have a plan for tomorrow. What about tonight? I can take the first watch if you'd like."
She had a small fear that if she didn't take the first watch, Johnny might be stubborn and just let her sleep through the night.
