Well, that went without the questions that Mary had feared. She flashed him a grin.
"I'll stay in sight," she agreed.
The store had windows enough that he could keep an eye on her. If they were back home, she wouldn't have worried nearly so much. But here? Anything could be lurking anywhere and she liked the idea of Johnny having her back. She tried not to think about how much things with this Johnny were starting to feel like her Johnny. They'd pretty easily fallen into being partners on things like this. He hadn't changed a whole lot over the years, so she was glad to have him at her side and have at least one consistent thing amidst all of the chaos.
She picked out the items in question and headed to the cashier. While she had her smile out and made the small talk that just bordered on flirty, he didn't even glance once at the coin. She wasn't sure if that was a tribute to her appeal or if it was legitimate, but she had a grocery bag in hand on her way out the door. She gave Johnny a triumphant smile.
"Consider the bacon brought home," she joked.
After all, they were in a time when gender roles were a lot more rigid and she got a little kick out of subverting that.
