This is different (Simon)
The librarian yelped as she came to. She wasn't waking from a bad dream, just that feeling of not being wherever she should have been. With a deep breath, she opened her eyes again, not realizing that she had closed them in the first place. There were people everywhere, faces she knew somewhat. Somewhere moving, others were reacting, and it was not at all what she wanted to see. The lack of color, finally registering, was just as off putting.

Grey eyes, not just because the world had decided to turn grey scale, turned to the other person sitting across from her. While she didn't mind the face she saw, it wasn't the face she had been expecting to see. A manicured brow rose slightly.

"This is an interesting turn of events." Her gloved hands rest on the table before her. She noticed the bracelet around her wrist; it hadn't been there before, but she wondered at the sparkle. It may have been suiting that her booth mate did enjoy the shiny. She turned her hand over to get a better look at it.

"Did you poke something you shouldn't have, Simon? Or was this totally unknown to you? Although, I must say, I like the cut of your suit, what I can see of it." Her eyes lifted to the fairy's face. She had to push the fear that something might have happened to her partner; she couldn't see him from her seat, and she could only hope that Evan were somewhere else in this place. Whatever, wherever, and whenever they were.

"Brilliant." Simon complimented as he became aware of the change in scenery. He'd been very taken with the alien - the Researcher, she'd called herself - and had wanted to know more. Now, it seemed, that he wasn't going to get that chance. There were a host of questions budding in his mind, he let them all wither.

How they'd all been moved from one place to the other so quickly, and without even an inkling of memory of it, astounded him. They'd been at the meeting, learning new things, then suddenly they weren't anymore. Simon wondered how much, if any, time had elapsed in the interim.

He looked at Niks, glad to see her. Glad that he didn't have even a tickle of the infant American being anywhere near. She would worry, of course. He expected that. But maybe now she would devote more time to the one who deserved it.

"I assure you, kitten, this is none of my hand." He lifted that hand, delighting in the lack of color there. Then he looked at the suit he was wearing, and found himself pleased with what he saw. "Indeed, it is quite fetching, isn't it? Tailored just right. Impressive."

Smiling, he returned to the other topic. "I'm just as clueless as you are, when it comes to this matter."

"Of course, it isn't." Niks' tone was flat, suspicious? Quite possibly. She shifted a little in her seat, uncrossing and recrossing her legs beneath the table. She noticed a definite lack of garter; undergarments felt familiar, but the garters weren't there. She leaned a little further, shivering as fingers brushed at bare skin. No stockings?

"When someone compliments you, you should return the favor." It was a soft chiding, as she knew he found her attractive in her way. The librarian and the fairy had games they needed to play when in public, sometimes even in Dreams. And, as they were in public...

"I don't believe you are just as clueless as I am. You haven't been for some time, and I'd like to know why. Granted you are older and magical, and you do know a great many thing I do not. Yet, I would wager there is something else. Is it that you do not believe you are bound by the Tower?" She had no idea that this was true, and her words said as much.

"The spells were strong, and they bound you as long as the Tower existed. I am here, and so is Mr. Vang." She forced herself to remain calm and to keep her eyes on the beautiful fairy before her. Looking for Evan would be a give away somehow. Surely, Simon didn't know what had happened between them. How could he?

"We exist, thus the spells exist, yes?" It seemed logical to her. "So what is it you are not telling me?"

"You know you look wonderful, Lamb. You don't need silly flattery to hold yourself up." Simon dismissed the whole line of conversation easily. He didn't want to talk anymore about that. Especially since now she was getting on a subject that made him downright giddy.

"The spells were strong, indeed, little one. And were it a matter of just one or two of you being present, then I would, indeed, still be stuck in that spider's web of restraint. As it is, Evan is no more of the Tower than this table. He hates it and wouldn't give any piece of himself to help them out more than he has to. And you, you, my darling, aren't one of the original spell casters. Even if you were, it's not in your heart to keep me caged.

"I haven't been bound by the Tower since the Electric City that wasn't ours. I've been wholly free and able to do as I wished. I knew that it wasn't our city instantly, because all the bindings were gone. Just completely gone. I gave hints to a small girl named Jo, in exchange for a pretty little hair clip she thought had no meaning."

Simon grinned a mischievous grin and spread his arms over the back of the booth. He looked at Niks and awaited her reaction to what he was saying.

Any smile Niks might have had for the usual games and the praise she liked whether he felt she needed it or not was gone once he'd finished his little speech. At first there was shock, fear, anger, fear, then outrage.

"The what!" She didn't blush for her unladylike outburst, but her cheeks did start to flush as she became angrier. She thankfully did drop her voice, ignoring any looks she might have gotten. "You're telling me that you've been free this whole bloody time? You're telling me that you haven't been bound one moment, and you let me believe...even feel for you that you were-that you could be- and now?" She stood quickly, doing it rather easily even in the rather straight skirt - kick pleats allowed for movement.

"You bastard. You don't keep that sort of thing to yourself." Her hand closed at her side; she wanted to hit him. "I can't believe you." The anger barely hid the hurt. She knew he held secrets, but this wasn't one she'd think he'd keep from her, even if the Tower had tried to condition her to think it was better for all if the fairy were bound. She did like the idea, but not in any way the Tower would understand. Certainly not in any way she'd admit to to anyone other than the fairy himself and eventually Evan.

Simon didn't react to the outburst, it was almost as if he hadn't noticed it going on. It wasn't that he didn't think she had a right to be angry, she did. He just wasn't going to add to the spectacle that she was putting on. His life was not there for the amusement of others.

"It isn't like I've exactly seen you, is it." Simon's eyes took her in, and he reveled a little in her hurt and anger. "I wasn't sure if it was a fluke thing back in that Electric City, it wasn't that I was completely certain until our next stop."

He sighed and leaned forward. "I knew you were about, and I saw your little puppy, I figured he would tell you I was indeed in the party of those moved and you'd seek me out. When you didn't, I guessed, and correctly, it seems, that you were too wrapped up in your dalliances with the infant to give me a second thought.

"You can't place the blame all on me, Kitten. That's not how it works."

Bloody hell. It wasn't that Simon brought up the artifact hunter, but the way he referred to him. It was also that Simon just expected her to come looking for him?

Niks didn't want to give him the satisfaction of riling her up; it would mean he'd won this particular battle. But, she couldn't exactly grab a nearby knife and threaten him, could she? Actually, she wouldn't do that, not here. She'd find better times and places for that, and she wasn't going to make that much of a fool of herself in public.

But, her mixed up emotions demanded satisfaction. She'd learned to fight with some of the best at Tower. That didn't mean her skills, that might have been a little rusty, were good enough to do what she wished to a fairy, yet she tried just the same.

A very hard, very quick slap. That was the intent. A quick jab to the nose would upset the line of it, even if for only a few moments, and there might be blood. Blood was not something she wanted drawn - it would possibly put the fairy in danger. The fact that she worked all this through as she began the slap, whether it connected or not, made her angrier. She had subconsciously chosen to slap him rather than hit him to protect him? How very ridiculous.

She'd never raised a hand to him before. He expected it, kind of, because of the way he was acting. Yet there was a large portion of himself that thought she'd never do it. Never be able to do anything to his flesh.

Simon rubbed his cheek where it stung from the contact, and looked up at Niks with fire in his gaze. The glamour that shielded the rest of the world from his true face faded briefly, to remind the girl what she was dealing with.

"Take care, Ducks. You're special, but not so much that I'll let you get away with that very often."

He wouldn't act against her. Not because of one little slap.

"Sit down, Niklas. Settle yourself. You've more questions, I know you do."

The show of power, his true nature, should have cowed her, but Simon had to know that'd have just as much a chance at urging her on to the more destructive side of things. To push back in the only way she had at the moment. In the land of Dreams, she had a little more power.

"You do realize such a statement might be returned with a retort you do not wish to hear." She didn't say it, but the librarian could and one day would say that she'd leave him. It would be hard, even she knew that without saying the words or without making the threat, but even she had her point of no return, even with him.

"I've many questions, but they are not all connected to you." Her voice was calm, even if she didn't feel it. She slid into the booth, her palms flat on the table top. "Why did you not tell me?"

"I told you, Niklas, I simply didn't have the chance to." Simon waved a hand, brushing away her frustration. "There were many things going on around me, so many curious creatures running about. So many new faces to study. You had your own thing going on, and I had mine. It was a sad fact that they did not merge and we didn't stumble across one another until that farce of a meeting. Which, by the way, I only found out about due to the presence of so much wonderful strangeness."

He smiled at her. "I'm telling you now, chickadee. I don't see why you're so upset about it anyway. I'm free. I haven't been free in a good long while."

And, he thought, there wasn't much that she could do about that freedom any which way that it was looked at.

"You were with a lovely young thing at the meeting, speaking of which. I got the distinct feeling that you didn't want me anywhere near her."

"If you had guessed it back in the Electric City that wasn't, you should have said as much. We had moments. Also, if you wanted me to know, you would have found me. Do not play that particular game with me. It did not slip your mind, nor did it simply get caught in our busy lives. You made the decision not to tell me." Simon had been rather good at finding her when he wanted her, and Niks highly doubted that he couldn't do even more if he were truly free.

"I don't know that your being free is wise. You may glut yourself with it." It wasn't said so much as a snipe; oh, there was indeed snipe, yet she was concerned.

"I won't talk about her." At least, she wasn't playing stupid, and she wasn't going to demand he stay away. She simply wasn't going to have that conversation.

"What do you want from me? Do you wish for me to tell you that I didn't track you down after I was sure of the goings on because I felt that you would do something to restrain me once more? You, who always does your job, no matter how it might go against what you want. I wasn't certain of things in Electric City. I expected the bindings to weigh me down again every time I turned around. I was sure it was a fluke. Sure that the Tower would get their minds off of whatever had happened and tie me up again.

"I didn't tell you, my darling, because if you'd known when there was a Tower presence, you would have informed them. Don't say that you wouldn't have, because I know you. I know you so very well."

Simon pushed the spoon around on the table directly in front of him, his eyes settled on Niks and calm. He watched her carefully. This was more than a spat, he knew, this was a problem.

"Even now you doubt my ability to be free and not do something rash. I've had weeks to act out, Kitten. I could have turned your little puppy into a squirrel, and I haven't touched him, have I. I haven't done a thing to him, despite the way you stank of him at the meeting, despite the fact that I know he's been in the Dreamlands."

"I would have; they had a reason for it, and it wasn't simply that you were useful. Then again, there's still a reason you were vulnerable to the binding in the first place. Although, if we weren't where we were supposed to be, then how could I have contacted anyone who could replace the bindings? That is to say that they have similar abilities - science perhaps, but magic?" The librarian's hands rested on the table top.

"I need more answers about you, Simon. I need to know much more." Niks had always wanted more answers, and now seemed the better time to ask or even demand. She looked over him, brows furrowing.

She didn't say anything at first. Her lips might have thinned in frustration and anger, but she didn't say anything when he brought up Evan. She didn't even look around for him, somehow knowing that he wasn't going to be there. Her mind could process a good many things, but this was a sick gut feeling.

"You couldn't do much in the meeting - you arrived rather by chance right before one of our hosts. It would have been poor form, yes? And, doing something in the Dreamlands would not have been wise. I may not know as much as you, but I do know that much. Also, why should you be upset that he found his way there? It is something that happens to most in the Tower's employ, whether they remember it or not." She didn't add that Evan was one of that did not remember.

"What answers would you like, lamb?" Simon raised a brow. She'd always asked her questions in a way that he could brush aside with half truths. But now, now he found that he wanted to make it up to her a bit, what he'd done. The omission. But he still couldn't give it away for free. "And what will you give me for it, hm?"

But first, another matter.

"I chose to join your little meeting late, Niks. I watched all of you scurry to that house and gather together. I watched the big man named Piotr greet every one of you. Waited for the noise to calm down inside. You know me, lovie. I like to make an entrance. I wanted all of you to see me at once. I had, actually, planned to lord my knowledge over the whole lot, let the party know that I had some of the information that you were seeking, and just not tell. The damnedable alien had to ruin that bit of fun."

Simon made a face. He resented the alien. He had been fascinated by her, and still would love a chance to sit and stare at her. That wouldn't change.

"As to the Dreamlands, I don't care that he went, my dear. It was inevitable that the puppy would find his way sooner or later. He's too wrapped up in the place to never visit. It's what happened while he was there. You didn't think I would know. Nobody was there with you. I don't think you took into account that everything within the Dreamlands sings to me. The very trees around you knew and told." He was disgusted by the happenings. "To make it worse, it happened outside of those confines as well. One doesn't get saturated with another's scent like that just by idle chitchat."

How badly Simon wanted to, right now, throw Evan under the bus. To reveal that he'd had others besides Niks. That he'd dallied. But the fairy knew that she would only resent him for doing so. He couldn't bear losing her, or driving her away.

"Really, Niklas. There are better toys out there than an American infant that stinks of dog. Several sharing this room with us right now. Pick any one of them, and I'll stand aside and let you play without my interference. Just not him, Niks."

The librarian didn't answer the give-take question. She couldn't. There was much she could give, and just as much she wouldn't or couldn't. Her fingers absently played with the bracelet, but not to catch his eye, it was just something there to keep her fingers busy.

"Yes, I know you arrived late on purpose, but you were using timing as an excuse for not telling me about your new found freedom. I was making a point that it was your timing. You could have arrived earlier, or you could have found me as we were 'scurrying'. You could have done a good many things, but you did not." Her hands finally came together, clasping on tabletop.

"The Dreamlands told you?" She wasn't sure why she was shocked. Simon was in his element there, more so than anywhere else, bound or unbound. She felt at home there too, but she felt betrayed somehow. As if the trees and grass had shared something that should not have been shared. Something that was hers.

"Stop." The word was soft; the tone was anything but. "Stop calling him 'puppy' or 'dog.' I don't understand why you say that other than an insult, and I wish you would stop. You know well that there aren't many present I would play with as you call it. How do you know it is playing anyway?" She wondered at his words sometimes. What did he know she didn't when it came to this.

Simon wasn't going to argue what he could have done. It was in the past and not even he had the power to change that. Not that he could say that he would have. He'd chosen to do what he did for a reason. And he'd likely do it the same way, given a do over.

"Yes, kitten. The Dreamlands told me." that was all he was going to say on the matter. There were other pressing conversation topics. He didn't want to linger on the fact that she felt that she could hide things from him in the Dreamlands. Or that she felt she was alone there ever.

He turned instead to the matter of Evan. It astounded him that he could know something about a Tower employee that they didn't know themselves. What would Niks say if he told her? No. He wouldn't. There was a chance that Evan was gone now, anyway. Since he wasn't here with them now.

"Ask your cat." Was all he said about the request to stop calling the boy by the pet name. "Because you play with them, Niklas. And I see plenty here that you would find enjoyment with. Dally with your fiery redhead. She'd be good fun, I'm sure of it."

Simon sat up some. Losing his overly relaxed posture. "There is something that we direly need to speak on, but not here. Not now. Soon, however."

Niks watched the fairy carefully, and was a little irritated with herself when she wondered at the lack of any real answers. Everything felt half done, as if he still held back. She had long since doubted ever getting the full truth; she did wonder on occasion if he could give a full answer. He always needed payment, and as much as he was a fairy, she couldn't believe that he couldn't share if he wanted to. Perhaps that was the problem. He didn't want to really share with her.

"He smells like a dog. If you're talking about Mikey, I know he says he smells like a dog." Her nose wrinkled, and she didn't see it. Evan had a nice animal smell that suited him. "And, I don't play with them. You play with people; I try making connections. I-" She caught herself before saying anything about the 'fiery redhead.'

"No, no, I told you I won't talk about her." Then he followed that with more vague. "Simon Forte, you are an exasperating creature, and if you refuse to be straight with me, perhaps I should find someone else to visit."

"Who else would I be talking about?" Simon raised a brow, wondering if Niks had other cats milling around her all the time. He'd never known her to keep a pet before the catboy. Not that Mikey was a pet to her. He was, however, the closest she'd ever come.

"I do play with people. And I enjoy it quite a bit. You would see it in yourself if you looked hard enough. You just don't want to think you're anything like me. Heaven forbid that, right Niklas?"

Simon shook his head and waved a hand in the direction of the door. "If you wish to go, go. I'll be able to find you again if you do. Don't worry about that. We can have our little chat that needs to happen at a later date. It's important, but it'll keep."

The fairy was going to stay in the diner a bit longer, he thought. Order some tea. Watch the people. Delight in the new surroundings and relish his lack of bindings.

"First of all, he is not a cat, nor is he mine. Second of all, how do I play with people? What makes you think I play with people?" Niks did look a little hurt. It wasn't being like him that hurt, but the idea that she did use people for her own amusement. There were a few, sure, but overall, she didn't think she did such a thing.

"And, I will go when I'm good and ready." She just wasn't ready yet. She finally let herself look around again, and still there was no Evan. She saw many of the people who'd attended the meeting, many she knew by name, but she didn't see Sabev. That did cause some worry. A little more than her concern for Evan - Evan could take care of himself. The phoenix was another story.

"What is it you need to discuss with me? What's important but only just so that you feel the need to mention it yet not go into it?" She glanced at him again, her lips pulled a little in concern, not full worry yet.

"He's not yours, but he is a cat." Simon countered. She could believe what she wished. Simon was more apt to side with the boy who wandered around with a tail 100% of the time, no matter if he was on two legs or four.

"What did you say to the American when you met him, Niks? And what have you done with him recently that contradicts every rule you have ever given to the partners you've gotten?" Simon raised a brow. "And what of your penchant for fancy knickers? Hm? Your skirts that crawl up ever so nicely when you sit on a desk, to reveal the garters? Though perhaps you don't realize the games that you play. The way that you can torment a man."

Simon beckoned the waitress and ordered tea for him and Niks, then dismissed her just as quickly. He doubted it would be anything but bland black tea, but he had to have something.

"I simply cannot discuss it with you here. Once you know what it is, you'll be glad I chose to keep it to myself while in public. This is one thing you cannot tease out of me, little sparrow. It's too important."

"No, he believes he is a cat, and that is not the same." Niks' hand went up. "You may say what you wish, but he is more than a cat. He is something much more. He just needs to see that he is."

The libarian nodded slightly at the waitress and the order, not having it in her to say anything about her own undergarments with a stranger so close.

"The rules. He needed to put in his place. Running around like some Allan Quartermain. As if he were better than I am simply because he'd been out in the field more. I never gave Archer rules, nor the others." Archer had been a rare one in general, and the others what few they were had meant little to her. None had challenged her or her lifestyle the way Evan had.

"I wear what I wear because I like it. It if does torment, perhaps they should rethink what they're thinking. It doesn't torment all men. It certainly doesn't torment you, and you are male. Or are you saying it only torments human males?" Her brow rose in question.

"Is it truly important, or are you in the mood to bait me? To raise my curiosity until I offer something I shouldn't?" She shook her head and looked away again.

"Evan never thought he was better than you, Ducks. He was just never in his place in a building." Simon really didn't want to talk about that man any longer. He waved it away.

When the tea was brought, he picked up the mug - a coffee mug, how horrible - and had a sip. He'd been right. It wasn't what he'd actually call tea. More like hot flavored water.

"How do you know it doesn't torment me? How can you be so certain that every flip of your hair doesn't drive me to insanity? Because I don't show it? Because I have more control than an idiot human? Niklas Wright, you exude sexuality, and it's not an accident. Though, truthfully, you could put yourself in a dowdy pants suit and it would be no different." He smiled a bit around the sip of tea he was taking. "Why do you think so many of the graduate students and interns flock to your door?"

Simon put the tea down, letting all joking slide out of his features. "On this, I would not bait you, Niks. On this, I would not tease. Or make you gift me a shiny bauble. What I have to say is for you, a whole truth, freely given, no games, no manipulations. But I cannot say it here."

Niks wanted to pursue the Evan thread of thought a little longer, but she knew that pushing that could upset the fairy. She'd already broached the subject more than once as it was. It helped that what he said about Evan was a truth, and one that held something other than utter contempt for the artifact hunter, whether Simon had meant it that way or not.

"Because they're stupid humans." She was talking about the graduate students and interns. So, she had played with a few of them, yet she'd never let them think they were more than a bit of fun. She refused to let a single one of them think it was more if she didn't believe it was. There was a time or two she let herself get caught up in things, but she was always careful to make sure whatever she did did not become scandalous.

"Because you don't show it." She nodded. "You freely touch me when we are alone or dreaming, but it is usually little teasing things that you might do with anyone or thing you believe pretty and want to posses, yes?"

The librarian sat back to look at him, taking in the seriousness. It only made her more curious. "Then where?"

"Would you like me to touch you now?" Simon asked it in all seriousness, his hand laying out along the table and within her reach. She could take it if she wished. "I adhere to your rules, Niks. You don't wish anyone to know your dalliances with the fairy. They all know that you're a curiosity of mine, they know that you're protected and off limits. But if they were to know that there was more. The times that we spend in the Dreamlands, the secrets we keep of each other, that would diminish their view of you, would it not? For all you think of me, I wouldn't ever do a thing to harm what you hold dear."

He felt that this was evident in the fact that Evan was still walking around unscathed. But it might need pointing out. Which would make him bring up a man that made him tired to think about.

"There is nobody outside of you who I treat this way." The fairy knew he was being more honest with her than he ever had. But if not now, when? If not here, where? This moment was upon them both, and he was choosing to embrace it. "I tease and I frustrate, I play and I taunt. But if you cared to look closer at any of it, you would see the underlying truth behind it all.

"I'll find a place that is secure and secret." He promised of the where.

Niks was more than a little confused. She knew he cared in his fashion, but this was different. Wasn't it? Had she ever really placed rules on him? Of course, she didn't want it known that they were connected; he was the enemy of sorts. He was something kept, but she did care for him, drawn to him. Then again, everyone who met him was drawn to him, even those who felt a need to strike him. He was a prickly sort.

"I don't know what I want." Or more she knew what she wanted and knew she couldn't have it. The world did not work such ways, certainly not the real world, which at the moment was not real at all. Not her reality.

"I need air." She was feeling faint, and she didn't care for it. The tea, if it could be called such, would not do in finding some calm. "You confuse me."

"Shall I offer to take you outside, kitten? Or would you rather go alone?" The question was asked in honesty. He didn't know right now what she would prefer.

"You need some time to settle in to what you've just learned. To have a breath before you hear more. I'll leave you be for a few days, Niklas. In the mean time, I'll settle myself in this strange world."

For any other thing, Simon would have just taken her to the Dreamlands, but what he had to say couldn't be said there any more than it could be said in this diner. There were witnesses there, just as there were here. Eavesdroppers. He wanted to express this secret for just Niklas alone.

"Yes." Niks didn't bother giving him more of an answer, only started to slide to the end of the booth to stand. She could probably make it out of the diner alone, but she didn't want to risk it. To have at least one of the people she cared for close by was a boon, and while she didn't know where to begin with the truth Simon gave her, he was of the few she felt strongly about.

Once more she found herself wishing the fairy and the artifact hunter could accept each other. It was selfish and more than a little naughty. Perhaps if Evan could see the wings, how very beautiful and wondrous Simon was when he wasn't hiding from the normal types. Evan had accepted Sabev, why not Simon in his truer form? Why Simon couldn't accept Evan as something more than some silly human who for whatever reason smelled like dog? Evan was an attractive man; Simon had to see it, and if he'd only let himself feel the rawness that was Evan in the Dreamlands...yes, it was selfish, and she knew if she could ever sleep, she would have dreams that would never let her look at either man again without a blush, at least not for a while.

She stood, and thankfully her knees didn't give. She wanted to kick herself for becoming so very...ridiculously romance novel damsel like. Not even a good one, but one that had to be helped out before she lost herself to the vapors.

Simon's movements mirrored hers easily. He didn't bother leaving any money for the waitress, or even making it look as he had. There were more important things to tend to at the moment.

He took her elbow to steady her and guide her out of the diner. Before even opening the door, Simon knew the air would be cleaner than it was in Electric City, but that the city itself would feel much the same. Cities never changed. They were ever moving, breathing entities. Always awake.

The fairy didn't let go of the girl even when he encountered the glass. He just deftly stepped forward a touch and stood aside so she could pass freely. Once he had her outside, he guided her to a conveniently placed bench. He sat beside her.

"Better?"

The librarain was grateful for how easily Simon moved with her without looking as if he were the only thing holding her up. He protected her need to look strong even if at the moment she didn't. She felt lost, confused, and in need of a proper smack to the head. That or a cold shower.

"Yes." Her hands settled on her lap, and her ankles tucked to the side, crossed. She could be somewhat prim and proper even when she felt the need for air.

"So is it a torment?" She glanced at him from the corner of her eye, her cheeks taking a slight blush. "And, if it is, why let me have my playthings at all? Do you like seeing me torment others? Have them do my sexual bidding?" Her cheeks grew no darker because the first of the questions were almost a request for a compliment, and the following questions let her slake her need for answers, even if only temporarily. She wanted to understand.

"Or do you like to play the voyeur, knowing what I do with them when we are alone? Watching as you watch all things?" Her curiosity was dangerous.

"You, my dear, are the most delicious torment." Simon claimed the bench as his own, much like he did pretty much anywhere he sat. He listened to Niklas as she asked her questions, and thought how best to answer.

"I let you have your playthings because they are what you want. I could never truly deny you." Thoughtfully, Simon picked at lint on his shirt. The lovely suit that he'd been placed in was near perfect, not a speck of stray dirt. The lint was invisible to all, even him. But he needed to do something. "And perhaps yes, I do enjoy thinking of what you do with them when you're alone. The games you might play. The way you truly come alive.

"When you're alone with somebody, kitten, you let yourself shine through. How could I not want to know that happens? Even if you are in the arms of another. It brings me great joy when you glow. When you let yourself, I should say. There's a tight restraint you keep normally, and I understand why you do it. But you've mountains of potential, any opportunity for it to be unleashed is pleasurable to me."

He dropped his hand to his knee and his gaze fell on the librarian. "I beg you not to take up with the infant American, and yet I don't do anything to him when you do. Does that not strike you as curious?"

"If you harmed him, I would be angry. I don't believe you'd care to see how I'd glow then." Niks addressed Simon's question about Evan first. All that he said before was strange, and it warmed her.

"How do you know what I do when I am alone with another?" She finally looked at him. "Do you simply think of it, or do you watch?" She shifted a little beside him, somehow allowing him more room while leaning into him ever so slightly.

"Why not pursue me? Rules be damned. You've never been fully bound by them, why keep to mine? Why not push and pull until you opened me up and felt that glow for your own?" Again her questions were for facts, although they were about her, about their relationship. She could look at this from a distance, or try to keep separated. She wanted to understand, and the only way to do that was ask more questions. She reached up and fixed part of his lapel, it didn't need fixing, but she too needed something to do. Perhaps she needed to touch him without really touching him.

"Why not work your charm, and I don't mean magic, on me? I have no doubt you've had your share of playthings, pets, and then some. Why not try for such with me?" Her fingers stayed on his lapel a little longer than they needed to.

"He is more than you let him be, Simon. I know you don't care for him, but he is more. He came to the Dreamlands dressed." It might have seemed simple, and there was always a possibility of a fluke, yet... "He has something there...a power." Her hand lifted to let finger tips brush at his jaw. She was risking the skin to skin contact in public, who knew why.

"I take what I know of you when we're alone, and I expand on it." He shook his head just a little. "I don't pry and I don't watch. I don't truly know. I just imagine. I see the freedom in you, what little bit of it there is, when we stand together in my office where none can tread unless I give my say so. I see more of that when we're in the Dreamlands, where you give in to what you really want more than you would in the waking world. No, Niklas, I have no real knowledge of how you are when you're with your playthings."

She was very right that he didn't want to see her angry. And so the puppy lived on. Untouched, unscathed. Without a speck of retaliation. And without his secrets vomited onto the lap of the librarian they both cared for.

Simon took Niks' hand gently in his and brought it to his lips to place a dainty kiss before he went on. He held it close to his heart as he spoke, but he did not look at her. He'd never given anyone so much information before. And certainly not without payment.

It felt strange.

Nice. But strange.

"Because I don't wish to coerce your affections. I want you to come to me of your own volition. Under your own decision. I could have you with a kiss. Make you need me beyond your ability to resist, with just a kiss. I follow your rules because I have to. You've put them in place, and I will not break them before you do. I don't wish for you to be my plaything, Niklas. I have no desire to have my fun until you break."

Simon sighed and let go of her hand. "I know he's more." That was one matter he wasn't going to expound upon. It frustrated him endlessly that they lately always circled back around to Evan Vang. Simon cursed the day the Tower brought him to Electric City to stay.

"Then why tell me that you like to break pretty things after telling me I am such a thing?" Niks had liked the kiss, the touch of his hand on hers, and she felt guilty. She felt guilty because she had felt no guilt when she had a possibility in Evan, yet could see herself enjoying Simon. It was wrong to feel as if she could have both without seeing either as a plaything; she'd laughed at more than one story she'd read with such things taking place. They were usually just smut, but this felt different - wasn't that what they always said, those heroines who had multiple lovers or possibilities?

"I want to know what you feel like." It was a statement, not a request, and there was no burning or yearning in it. It was a fact. She'd wanted to know the moment she'd met him, even if she wanted to poke him very hard with something very sharp. She'd wanted it even more when she saw his true self, perhaps not the small creature he became - that seemed too much like a strange bit of erotica. She also knew it wasn't just a sexual needed, perhaps that's why she could say it so matter of factly.

"I've read too much." She sighed softly, allowing herself to rest her head on his shoulder. "There is a spirituality I long to share..." With Simon, and with Evan though she'd have to say Evan called to her more physically at times. "And, now I sound like some bloody book; I hate sounding like books with pat lines that make one cry or smile. They're so ridiculous."

Her knee lightly touched his, and her hands rested in her lap as she rested against him. "What are we to do?" The question was rather open ended, and at the moment, she didn't care to give a specific direction to it.

Simon let the statements and question hang in the air. He couldn't answer any of it right now. She had to know the rest of what he needed to tell her before he could really react to any of it.

And he had to decide if he was going to tell her, or simply show her. There were reasons behind all of it, every single bit of what she was saying. It would all likely make more sense to her once she knew. He knew that many things in Niks' life would likely make more sense after that, be it for the better or worse.

He just didn't know if he wished to describe what was on the other side of the door, or simply open it.

"You will find yourself a place to stay, as will I. In a few days, we'll meet again. After that, you'll better know what it is that you want, or see a path to it more clearly."

Niks nodded slightly, giving a soft sigh. She didn't sit up straight as might have been expected. She knew that she would do as he said, not because he was commanding it or demanding it but because it was simply what would happen.

"I don't want to wait, you know." She sat up looking at him. "I don't care for waiting for answers." She leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek She wasn't in the mood to live so dangerously as to give him a kiss near the lips.

"Though I have a feeling you may have an easier time of it. As long as you don't call anyone a 'ridiculous human." Just a light teasing.

"I know you don't." Simon smiled at her. "But it's best if you do. Trust me on this, lamb, if you have never trusted me before. The time will be good for you."

Before they could get into another round of conversation, Simon eased himself away and stood up. He had things to do, after all. A suitable place to live wasn't going to be the most difficult thing he'd ever done, but he was pretty picky.

"In a few days." He promised without so much as coming out and saying those words.

Simon left Niklas on the bench, confident she'd be alright on her own.
