Mary would have made a comment about how she was glad at least one of them was able to laugh about it. Maybe it was funny from a distance. Up close, her family tree just kept getting more tangled and confused.
That comment died on her lips with Johnny's admission. She stopped and just stared up at him.
"You didn't," she said slowly.
Then she shook her head.
"You did," she added, as if that had actually been in question. "Did you mention my name? Maybe he won't figure out that you were talking about me."
If Rob did figure it out, well, Mary wasn't sure what would happen then. Would he tell Dean and Jo? Would he try to hunt Johnny himself? Was he the sort of brother who might actually hear Mary out before he made up his mind?
No, that last option wasn't very likely. That sort of thing didn't exactly run in the family, did it?
