"Well, okay, there's that, but you seem to be requiring my brain to be rational when it is clearly incapable of that at this moment." Johnny shook his head, knowing how ridiculous he was being. Not had been. Was. That flare up had not died down, despite her reassurance that nothing had happened between her and Evan. There was something about that guy that rubbed Johnny wrong, and he didn't think that it was strictly to do with this situation right now.
"You know the last time I was jealous like that?" He pushed his chair back, giving his legs room. He didn't think that Mary would have any doubt where he was going with the thought. She knew the whole story. She knew how recent it was for him compared to the Johnny of her time. There would be no question. He didn't really need to keep on. But his mouth continued. "When I first met Katie. We were in a gas station, of all places, and the guy at the register had no idea that she'd even walked in with somebody else. He made a comment about her, and I got so mad. I did hit that guy. Katie got even more upset than I did. Yelled at me. Said that kind of thing was bound to happen, and if I wanted to be with her, I'd have to get used to it. She wasn't the type to stray because somebody bats their lashes."
Johnny looked over his shoulder at Mary. "You're the same way. You don't even have to tell me. And what's worse? After everything we've talked about, after we've established whatever shaky ground we stand on together, I've just made the waters muddier for the both of us."
