(for eleni and whoever else is around!)
Annabelle blinked.

The wall in front of her wasn't the wall that'd been there when she fell asleep in the arm chair. That wall, in her dorm room, had a big poster on it. Van Gogh's Sunflowers. This wall had some strange painting of what looked like a chocolate zombie Jesus.

Not the cliche kind of zombie Jesus. Not the standard joke. No. the thing had bites out of it, and at His feet, there were.. were those vampire ducks?

She sat up straighter in the chair, looking around for a suite mate who might've picked her lock and changed stuff around on her. Nobody was here. She got her feet under her, pulled on her red cardigan, grabbed her messenger bag, and opened the door.

This was most definitely not her hallway, either.

Annabelle began to get slightly panicky. She was trying not to get upset. She knew what would happen if she did. The last thing that would help the situation of not knowing where she was would be flying objects and flickering lights. She took big, deep breaths and headed for the end of the hall, where she could see daylight. She opened the door and stepped outside.

This was not New Orleans.

The trees were wrong. There was an absence of sweetness to the air from the Bougainvillea.

Those deep breaths were getting harder.

Annabelle took her cell phone out of her bag, fumbling with it. She found the recent calls, hit DAD, and send. Nothing happened. She tried one more time.

With the phone held to her ear, she shut her eyes. She was going to have to find her way home, or at least to other people, on her own and without hurting anybody. She felt like a child for thinking that way, but it was true. She raced down the front steps of the building she'd woken up in and toward the street, phone still to her ear, looking one way and another, trying to decide which way to go.

Eleni had found Isaac and he wasn't doing all that well. She was worried about her brother, which meant that she tried to convince him to stay inside and resting while she went for food. She was still finding her way around this place, but she'd at least memorized which direction the downtown area was.

She headed down the street, so intent on her destination that she didn't notice the woman in the red cardigan until the two had almost collided. At the last moment, the redhead dodged around the woman.

"Sorry," she said, mentally chiding herself for not paying better attention.

Sorry.

Annabelle almost dropped the phone. And once that happened, she hung it up and tucked it in her bag. The red haired girl really shook her. One, she hadn't expected to be walked into, and two...

... other than the red hair, there was something about her and how she looked that really reminded her of Mona.

But she wasn't Mona. And that made her heart hurt. She'd even take her strange cousin right now, the one that'd been so sick and then miraculously was totally better and more gorgeous than before...

Annabelle's mouth was hanging open, just a little. And she didn't realize that the second she'd walked into the redheaded girl, she'd touched her with her power.

It was brief, and it was not a focused thing. It probably felt like being tasered for ten seconds.

Ouch. Eleni didn't know what happened, but suddenly it felt as though she'd been zapped with something. Her body went rigid and a wave of pain rolled right through her. It passed quickly, but the fact that she didn't know what had happened had her spooked.

Her eyes were wide when she looked over the other woman.

"Did you feel that?" she asked.

There were a lot of freaky things in this place, but usually they came out after dark. And usually they weren't invisible. This was... this was new. And not happy.

Okay. This was bad.

Annabelle HAD to calm down. Just because she wasn't in New Orleans and had maybe been kidnapped didn't mean she was within her rights to just unleash on strangers. This woman hadn't provoked her, or hurt her.

Did you feel that?

She somehow managed to close her gaping mouth. "N-no," she said. "I'm... I'm sorry, I'm really lost. Can you tell me how to get to a bus station? Or a pay phone, even? My phone doesn't seem to be doing it's job."

Eleni didn't ask how the girl knew what 'that' she was referring to enough to answer that she hadn't felt it. She seemed freaked, and the redhead could relate. Oh boy could she relate to waking up in a strange place and not being able to call anyone you cared about.

"I'm Eleni," she offered. "And I hate to say that I'm a little lost too. I woke up here a few days back and I'm still trying to figure out why. Before that, I'd woken up somewhere else that I didn't belong."

Her tone was soft and she tried not to cringe as she thought of how this all had to sound. She still wasn't all right with it herself, but she hadn't yet found a way to get home which meant that she had to deal for now.

Annabelle shook her head, trying to process what the girl said. Eleni. Okay. She seemed normal enough...

"Wait. You woke up... where? What--what happened?" She sighed, heavily. "Because I went to sleep in a dorm room in New Orleans and I woke up about fifteen minutes ago back there," she said, pointing to the building.

Despite wanting to hold them back, tears were threatening. Her eyes were hot, she could feel it.

The girl was upset, not that Eleni could blame her. She gestured in the direction of the house that she'd been sleeping in.

"That house over there. Before that, I woke up on a bus into this place called Electric City. Were you there before here?"

Most of the people she'd talked to had been in Electric City right before their arrival in this place, so Eleni could only assume that the two were connected.

"Both times, I went to sleep in one place and just woke up somewhere strange. Though this is a lot stranger than Electric City."

Eleni nodded again toward her house.

"Maybe we should sit down for the rest of this conversation. I think I have coffee, if you'd like some? I might even have cookies."

This did not sound good.

What was worse was Annabelle had no explanation for it. None. Even with the things that went on with her, with her family, there were explanations. On this, she had nothing. Not a blessed thing.

Electric City? She ran through the nicknames different cities had in her head. That didn't even ring any bells. Annabelle shook her head.

Sit.

Sitting sounded good.

"Okay..."

Annabelle sucked her lip. "You're... going to tell me there's some kind of explanation for all of this or something, right?"

She fell into step with the redhead.

Eleni started to lead the way and looked over at the brunette's question.

"Of course there's an explanation," she said, confidently. "Everything has an explanation. I... just haven't found it yet."

But it was there. It had to be. She was looking for it and as long as she applied the right scientific method and did the math and looked at the situation from every angle, she would figure it out.

The fact that the other girl wasn't from Electric City was a variance on what she'd found out so far, and that didn't sit well with Eleni. It was yet another variable to factor in as she tried to solve the mystery going on here.

"So where were you before you woke up here?" she asked.

Annabelle offered a weak smile. Explanations for everything. She agreed; that was why she'd been poking around behind her father's back.

So where were you before you woke up here?

"Oh," Annabelle said. "Tulane."

She'd said something about it before, but she supposed Eleni hadn't caught it.

"New Orleans," she said. "And. I'm sorry. I'm so distracted... I'm Annabelle."

Eleni blinked. New Orleans? Yes, that was definitely different.

She did smile warmly at the other girl.

"It's nice to meet you, Annabelle, though I think we both would have preferred different circumstances."

Once they reached the house she'd been staying in, Eleni unlocked the door and gestured for Annabelle to step inside.

"Are you thirsty? I have hot chocolate and sparkling wine and maybe some juice."

She at least had the two most important out of those three. Never mind that it might not be quite hot chocolate weather. Right now, Eleni needed the comfort drink more than anything.

Thirsty?

Now that she thought about it, Annabelle was parched. Hungry, too. She tried to remember the last time she'd eaten... it'd been at the college. Macaroni and cheese. Lunch.

But how many days ago was that, even? She frowned.

"Water or juice is fine," Annabelle said. "Thanks."

She sighed. "Sorry, I'm trying to remember what I was doing before I was here. How long have you been here?"

Eleni led the way into the kitchen and gestured toward the table for Annabelle.

"Have a seat. I have food too, if you're hungry."

She was doing her best to play welcome wagon, even if she knew little more than what Annabelle knew at the moment.

She found the juice and poured a glass for both of them and then moved to set the glasses down on the table.

"A few things about this place. So far, the houses that we've all woken up seem safe. But I'll warn you not to go out at night."

She would answer any further questions, though she half expected her answers to be met with disbelief. But she had to try, had to give Annabelle the chance to keep herself safe after dark.

Hungry.

"A little bit hungry," Annabelle said. Truthfully, she felt a little strange. She wasn't the most social person, and she'd just met this girl, and was being offered snacks.

But she took a seat at the table.

Don't go out at night...

Her eyebrows drew together into a thin, dark line. This sounded a lot like her father's speech about why she shouldn't walk across Canal Street after dark, or it seemed like it might be going that direction. New Orleans very definitely had good blocks and bad blocks. One wrong turn and you really needed your pepper spray.

Or your ability to stop a human heart.

"Why?" She took a sip of the juice, realized how thirsty she was, and drained most of the glass. "Is it a crime thing?"

Eleni shook her head slowly.

"No, it's not a crime thing. You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you so please just take my word on it."

The redhead winced, fully aware of how it sounded. If she were in Annabelle' s shoes, that statement might just pique her curiosity. She busier herself in the fridge and came up with some sliced turkey, bread, lettuce, and mayo. She set all of that on the table so her 'guest' could choose what to put on her sandwich.

Oh, but she would.

She would believe.

Annabelle's family had quite the closet full of skeletons. Not all of those skeletons were human. She raised both eyebrows and searched Eleni's face for some sign of what she was holding back. Not crime...

Crazy weather? That could mean another witch was here.

Monsters? She had monsters back home. Aplenty.

Annabelle grabbed the jar of mustard and turned it around, absently.

"Well, what's there to be afraid of? Bodily harm? Lightning striking people?"

Eleni settled into a chair at the table and helped herself to the sandwich ingredients only after Annabelle had had the chance to do so.

"It falls more into the category of bodily harm at the moment," she said.

She frowned and looked around the house, strange decor and all.

"Is there any chance you believe in vampires? Or zombies?"

Yeah, she knew how it sounded. But the other girl had asked and Eleni didn't like her own questions being brushed off, which meant that she tried to give answers when she could.

Okay. So. Maybe it was good she had pepper spray.

Annabelle busied herself piecing a sandwich together and stopped mid-construction at Eleni's question.

Sometimes she wondered if the Mayfairs had spies in addition to everything else--all their money, all the lawyers and doctors and high-powered relatives she had... why not spies?

She raised her eyes to Eleni's abruptly and put down her fixings.

"Do you... you don't by any chance... did somebody hire you?" Annabelle sighed. Maybe this was another one of Lauren's tests. It was widely believed that Lauren Mayfair was evil.

Eleni blinked in surprise. Of all of the questions that she might have expected, that wasn't one of them.

"Did someone hire me to do what?" she asked.

She wondered what might be going on with Annabelle that she would think that someone was hired to do... what to her exactly?

Eleni's dad being who she was, there was always some concern about potential assassins or abductors, so her imagination could certainly fill in the blanks as to some of the possibilities. All the same, she did wonder.

Annabelle nibbled at her lower lip.

"Ask me things like that," she said. "Look... nevermind. I just..."

She had to chuckle. There wasn't really a way not to. She knew the rumors about Mona. She knew no one would say it, but once you saw her, you knew. She'd been so sick, and now she was magically fine. Glowing, even. And that boyfriend of hers...

"I'm sorry. But... that kind of question... it's not that weird. Not to me." She was shaking her head. "And my family's kind of a pain in the ass. I was starting to wonder if maybe all of this, being here, had something to do with them."

And how much they wanted her to sign those papers.

Annabelle resumed fixing her sandwich, then pressed the bread together and cut it in half, done.

"I believe in both of those things because they're real," Annabelle said.

Well, she supposed that made things a little easier. The lack of disbelief regarding supernatural creatures. Eleni frowned at Annabelle's suspicion that her family had something to do with this.

"I don't know your family. And there are a lot of us stuck here, so unless your family is targeting people at random, I don't think they're involved."

She studied the other young woman, wondering again what her history was and why her family might be capable of something like this.

"Do you mind if I ask why you think your family might be involved?"

No, the Mayfairs certainly did not target at random. They set their phasers to stun, yes, but only for those who'd wronged them, or only for their own.

Annabelle's shoulders relaxed a little.

Do you mind if I ask why you think your family might be involved?

She shook her head and took a bite of her sandwich, chewed it thoughtfully and then answered.

"No," Annabelle said, shaking her head slightly more. "I just... it's an incredibly long story and I'm not sure how much of that you really want to sit through right now."

She sighed.

"They have a lot of money. And influence. And they want me to do something I'm not sure I want to do. That's the short version."

The incredibly short version. One that left out the part about the Taltos. About the Legacy. About what the people in her family could do.

Eleni felt that this was definitely the short version of things and she couldn't help but wonder at what the long version might be.

"And your family knows about zombies and vampires?" she asked slowly. She didn't want to pry, but there was an edge of curiosity there.

Eleni took a few bites of her sandwich, realizing that she hadn't thought much about eating lately. She'd been too worried about her brother and about what was going on with this place. It was good to get the chance to stop and eat, even if this was as much an attempt at playing welcome wagon as it was a meal.

Annabelle took the easy way out of Eleni's question.

She nodded.

"New Orleans is... a little different," she said, with a slight smile. "There's an active voodoo temple not that far from the French Quarter. Everybody knows about the supernatural, but nobody outright talks about it."

That was all true. She just left out the part about her family being witches. "But... I mean voodoo zombies. Not... Oh, God. Do you mean the kind that eat you?"

Her eyes grew larger. "You do."

Eleni winced and nodded.

"It's going to sound crazy, but they're not the types of zombies that you'd usually pictured. They're... bunnies. And there are vampire ducks."

While the words sounded ridiculous, her expression was grave and her tone of voice serious.

"Both are more dangerous than you would think."

Annabelle blinked several times.

"What... Does that even...?"

Did that even work? She didn't think anything but a human being could become a vampire. It didn't work that way, did it? She was struggling to get her mind to wrap around that.

Both are more dangerous than you would think.

"But are they normal size?"

Because running from a bunny seemed easy enough.

Eleni nodded, though she regretted giving that answer. She didn't want Annabelle to underestimate the risks out there.

"From what I can tell, they usually travel in packs. Beheading works on the rabbits. Not sure about the ducks yet, but fire seems to be useful."

She grimaced ever so slightly. She didn't mean to, but killing animals definitely wasn't a high point in her list of things that she'd done since she'd woken up on that bus to Electric City. For that matter, it wasn't a high point of the things she'd done ever. She'd done what she needed to do to survive, to make sure that others were safe. but that didn't mean that she was happy with herself for it.

"They travel in packs and they're fast. I think that one by itself might not be so bad, but when there are several it's a different story."

Annabelle swallowed.

She didn't like the sound of any of this. "Jesus," she managed.

Then she remembered the painting she'd woken up near, and suddenly things made just a little bit more sense.

At the same time, she wasn't worried about herself. She knew what would happen if anything mean cornered her--human or rabbit or whatever else. It was that if that was 'normal' for here, what exactly was going on?

"Where... where ARE we?" she managed. "How is this just, like, the way that things are?"

The sentiment expressed with that first word about summed up how Eleni felt about it all. She sighed and shrugged ever so slightly.

"I wish I knew on both counts. I'm still asking around. The most I can determine is that the name of the town we're in is Caldbury."

She thought about the meeting that Max had mentioned to her, thought about the hopes that she had pinned on it that there would be something new to learn at the meeting.

"There are a few of us who have recently found our way here meeting in a couple of days. We're hoping to pool our resources and maybe shed some light on the situation here. You're welcome to come if you'd like."

Caldbury. That wasn't familiar.

She was not anywhere she knew about, but that didn't mean much. Annabelle had been a great many places, but there could a Caldbury in Alabama, and she wouldn't know. And despite her intelligence, it wasn't ringing any bells, either.

You're welcome to come if you'd like.

Annabelle opened her mouth to say no. Because she didn't want to hurt anybody, and she was on edge, and that was likely to happen. But that wasn't what came out once her mouth did open.

"Okay," she said. "Yeah, I think I should go to that." She took a bite of her food, chewed it carefully, and swallowed. "I want some answers."
