"You hadn't noticed?" Now that was surprising. "They had two pupils, love. Not always. Just when they needed to focus on something in the distance. A little blink and there it would be. A pair instead of one."
Simon sighed, unhappy with the whole thing, but still too enthralled with the adventure of it to get himself worked up.
"Their little humans were perfect in all ways except for that one. They would have fooled anybody. One could have been standing next to one's own mother and not seen any difference. All except for that one tiny detail. It's curious that they couldn't alter that. Or perhaps they didn't want to. Perhaps it was meant to be our first clue."
He looked at the vampire.
"Only a few were actually who they were supposed to be. Now, sweets, you have yet to tell me your name."
