Out of the cold (Rob)
The little town was ... well, it wasn't exactly quaint. It was oddly sophisticated. But rural. He spied no cars and no other forms of transportation. There were shops and ... well. It all seemed so modern without being modern. He wouldn't have been able to explain it if he'd been cornered and forced to. Another thing was that the people weren't people. They were people, in the sense that they were alive and individuals, but not human, that was incredibly clear. Humans were not that ungodly beautiful.

They eyed him as he walked through the street, which wasn't really a street so much as a nice cleared path. Like they didn't trust him. Or maybe they didn't know why he was there. He sure as hell had no idea.

The warmth here was welcome though. The cold had kept him inside on the last planet, he'd been entirely uninterested in the snow. Though he had gone out and spied two familiar faces on the ice, skating and having fun. He hadn't said hi, he'd just gotten hot chocolate and headed back to the cottage he'd been placed in. Thankfully there had been a lot of books. Unfortunately, most of them had had to do with Christmas.

He'd also spent some time thinking about Lasher and Annabelle, but it wasn't anything he found he could focus on long, mostly because he had no answers to give himself, and he would drift back into whatever silly story he'd picked up.

Cavan ran a hand through his hair, eyes darting around to find a familiar face. They couldn't have put him here all alone, right?

Rob would have liked to give the aliens a piece of his mind. They were always moving him along to another world at the rather inopportune times. Just as he and Piotr were finding some sort of forward momentum along the relationship path, he found himself in yet another place. At least here he didn't need to wear so many layers.

The Man of Letters moved about town investigating as best he could without talking to the inhabitants. They came in all shapes and sizes, which wasn't exactly new since they started this journey. What was new was the lack of anything iron. He didn't have his weapons - again not new - yet his search for anything that could fend off a ghost led to a little bit of salt but no iron. It was a little troubling.

Rob wondered why the people here seemed a little put out. He could understand, having strangers around, but the fact that they were indeed strangers was different. Usually they were expected in some way, either as every day citizens or accepted guests.

"Excuse me..." Before he could finish the request for information, the tall beauty walked away. Rob hadn't addressed the man because he was beautiful, though it did help. He had addressed the man because he'd been there, and he had actually looked him in the eye for a brief moment. Or perhaps Rob had imagined it?

Rather than follow the man with what looked like Vulcan ears, Rob looked for another person to "accost." Someone had to be willing to help him out.

He finally spotted somebody who wasn't otherworldly, and watched the poor guy try to talk to one of the natives. Cavan felt like he could feel the disgust pouring off of the taller of the two from where he stood. He waited until the path had been cleared and the more human looking one stood alone before he made his approach. He was aware that he couldn't know for sure that this one was part of the group, though it seemed more likely than not.

"Uh. So." He waved at the general surroundings. "Assholes, right?"

It was extremely awkward. A bad start to things, for sure. He should have said something less inflammatory, or at least introduced himself.

Rob blinked. That wasn't what he was expecting as his first words from someone in a new place. But, it fit. He gave the guy a slight smile then laughed softly, nodding in agreement.

"Was thinking 'dicks,' but 'assholes' works, too. Been having issues with them too?" He was the curious sort, so asking questions was the norm. He liked knowing things after all. He did feel a little odd in the clothes he was wearing; at least he wasn't alone in the strangely Ren faire gear. It was made of better material with an eye for detail that walked the line of intricate and simple. Deceptively simple?

"I'm Rob." He offered a hand, might as well get the introductions out before they continued any commiserating.

"Cavan." He shook the hand, glad to have a companion in this. He wondered where Dean was. He wondered if Dean was also wearing stupid pants. God, he hoped so.

"They," he indicated the natives with a nod of his head "seem to be allergic to acknowledging outsiders. Or they can't hear us. Or they're dicks."

He shrugged. "I've been trying to find something to eat. I'm fucking starving to death. Not literally, obviously. But a simple 'hey, the food is that way' would have been nice. I think one of them actually snorted at me in disgust. I've never had anybody do that. I've read about it in books, but experienced it? What the hell."

"I'd go with dicks." Rob watched as another one of the so-called dicks passed by, though this one did take the time to sneer at them. Rob just smiled and gave a slight nod. Nothing pissed off a dick more than a smile; he'd had a lot of practice at that one.

"It could be worse; they could be throwing sharp objects at us." He was going to say 'they could be throwing food,' but Cavan could be hungry enough to eat that sort of food. Now that he thought about it, Rob wondered if he wasn't hungry enough for it. "There's probably something somewhere. It's just finding it."

The Man of Letters wasn't bad at finding things; he wasn't a world renowned finder of things, but he wasn't bad. He jerked his head slightly to indicate a direction and waited to see if the other fellow was willing to walk that way. He was curious about this Cavan. Rob worked through all the events that had happened since he got on the crazy train, all the people present; was Cavan one of those people?

Cavan was fine with dicks.

Well not fine with dicks... he was fine with calling them dicks. He didn't know if he was fine with dicks. He was pretty sure he was straight. His feelings for Annabelle that kept bubbling up and all. But he didn't know for sure, he had no experience.

Maybe he was fine with dicks.

"Who's to say that's not the next step?" Sharp objects seemed like it might fit directly into the MO of these people.

As soon as Rob indicated a direction, Cavan began walking in it. He needed food, or he was going to get grumpy and be unable to think of anything else, which would make him unproductive and unhelpful. The only person he liked being unhelpful with was Dean. Cause it was funny.

"Could be interesting." Not that that made it an especially good thing. Interesting was not synonymous with good, and Rob knew this first hand. He sometimes wished he didn't. He continued moving in the decided upon direction.

"So, Cavan, how long have you been traveling with the group?" seemed to be a safe question. Not too invasive or familiar. He looked down at his clothes. "This is some crazy shit, right?" Nothing like bonding over something as ridiculous as clothes if not their current situation. A little bit of both perhaps?

The guy wasn't bad looking, but Rob had someone else in mind honestly.

"Interesting. Yeah." Cavan knew that interesting didn't always mean good, too. He had a lot of experience with that.

He was glad to have found somebody to travel along with. Happier that it was somebody who knew that interesting wasn't always a positive thing. It made a difference.

"Since the start. Since Electric City. Been with Dean Winchester most of the time, you know him?" Cavan shrugged. "It's been weird for sure, but I kind of ended up in the situation because I was purposefully looking for weird. So, I can't really be upset."

He looked over at Rob. "You?"

"Yeah, sort of. I know of him anyway. Met him once, a couple worlds ago." Rob shrugged slightly; it wasn't a big deal. Or perhaps it had been such a big deal that went somewhat sideways he preferred to think of it in less than circumstances. It wasn't something he was going to get worked up over?

"Been with the group since Easterween." He wondered how Piotr was doing right now; the big Russian was always on Rob's mind, usually not far from family. He knew he was beginning to care for the other man a great deal.

"From what I gather not that long after the group started out." He paused, trying to get a fix on the smell of definitely cooked food. Bread maybe? Meat?

"What do you think about Dean Winchester?" seemed like the next best question to ask. He motioned in a particular direction. "Think foods this way."

"That was a hell of a place." Cavan nodded, thinking that he would never in his life forget that strange planet. It had been so much fucking weirder than anything else they'd seen, or had seen since, in his opinion.

"Dean's okay. He looks out for people, which is good. He likes to make sure that people are safe. He's kind of a dick, though." Cavan smiled. "He's super fun to fuck with, too. Oh man, he gets so angry and irritated. It's hilarious."

He made a face again. "I came to the somewhat sad conclusion that he might be my best friend in this group. I don't know how I feel about that."

Rob couldn't help the sad smile, the just as sad soft chuckle. Dean was a presence in youngest Winchester's life, had been ever since Rob was born. Rob was the accident child, or that was the conclusion he came to when he realized just what had happened. He'd never given his parents the chance to explain, and even if they were here now, they couldn't explain much. They weren't the same people.

"It's good to have a friend in the group, right? Could be worse, he could be some weird serial killer who has decided he wants to fuck with you before he kills you." Rob had read of a demon that fed on the misery before feeding on the person's heart and lungs. He never understood the lungs part. Lungs were rarely a part of any ritual.

"Could be anything. Least you got a friend who cares," hopefully the way he said it didn't make him sound too pathetic. He knew he had friends and family who cared. It was just strange that someone's best friend would be a relative Rob didn't know very well but had played a big part in his life.

Cavan narrowed his eyes. Rob's statement hit a little too close to home. It took him a second to realize that he was just saying a thing, not accusing Cavan of being something. Cavan carefully changed his suspicious face into one that looked like he was contemplating the possibility of Dean being a serial killer. Then he laughed. That came naturally. The idea of Dean as anything like himself was hilarious.

"He'll fuck with me, I'm sure. But he's not the type to murder and eat faces." He tilted his head, eyeing Rob. "Do you not have a friend? Is that why you say it like that?"

"Oh, I've got a friend." Rob laughed softly. "Or two." Of course, some were family, and others or one other was something slightly more. He shrugged. "Just thinking. Dean Winchester's kind of a thing were I'm from. Was curious."

Rob didn't say much more than that for the moment, just walked. The smell of cooked something was getting stronger, and his stomach was becoming more demanding. He knew he'd eaten in the world before, but it felt as if it'd been a long time ago with food now being so close.

"Corn?" It smelled like some sort of vegetable being grilled or roasting. He didn't think it was potato. He hoped food would be an okay change in subject without being too obvious.

"He's hot shit or something?" Cavan shrugged. "Okay. I can see that. He's all about rescuing and keeping people safe, and he knows a lot about really creepy shit, so I'm sure that all bundles together nicely into one hell of a savior complex."

He was quite happy to move on to another topic, especially one that might lead to something being in his stomach. Which was growling now out of protest to being empty.

"Kind of? It's like... corn but... " he smelled again. "something else. Almost a bell pepper? That's... well. I don't know. But it kind of sounds good. Not that I probably wouldn't eat shoe leather right now and be happy with it."

"Hot shit," Rob understood the phrase, but he wasn't sure that really applied to Dean. Not the way Cavan might mean. He shrugged it off; though the comment on 'savior complex' did make Rob smile. All Winchesters seemed to have that particular issue: savior or martyr.

"Shoe leather would take a whole hell of a lot of soaking. Long braising time?" Yes, Rob was looking for something a little less complex to deal with at the time. He turned his attention the grill as they approached. It did look like a bell pepper, or a pepper of some sort. There were seasonings of some sort that he wasn't sure he recognized. The woman working the grill gave them both a look.

"It smells good." Rob offered, not sure if they were going to have to steal the food or not. He had hoped that if they were forced to steal the food, it wouldn't be too difficult.

Cavan eyed the source of the smell, even going so far as to lean into it and make sure that it was where the aroma was coming from, as well as trying to identify it. He shrugged, ultimately not being able to tell one way or the other if it was a bell pepper, but it was the smell.

He looked at the woman, assessed her facial expression, and determined that she wasn't about to spit on them, though she seemed to be disgusted by their very existences.

"Can we buy them?" He asked, testing the waters. He reached into his pocket to try to find something. All he found in his wallet were a couple of good ol' American greenbacks. He held them out sheepishly.

The woman looked between the two men. Rob wasn't sure asking for anything from the woman was a good idea; eating seemed like a bad thing to do when they weren't exactly in their own world. Then again, they hadn't been in their own worlds for a while. But, there was something about these people evoking too many thoughts of the fae folk. He rubbed at his side before digging in pockets of his own.

"You can give me something of yours," the woman smiled finally, a dark smile that did nothing to make Rob feel better or welcome. "We can make a deal for the food."

It didn't work the same with others of her kind, but the lesser sort as these two before her were - she could twist them just a little bit. It would let her play a bit, wouldn't it? Even if she did nothing more than make them wonder what she would do to them later.

"What sort of deal?" Rob wasn't one to make deals readily. His family had been screwed over a few times by deals in the past.

Cavan made a face, the idea of a deal did not sit well with him. Especially after having dealt so much with demons and things that liked to take advantage. Maybe he was just paranoid, but he was ready to believe this woman did not have good intentions.

Once again, he showed her the money he had. He wasn't giving her anything else, mostly because he didn't have anything else to give.

He looked at Rob, wondering if the guy was looking to actually make a deal, or trying to suss out if the woman was being tricky or literal.
