"I'm sure that you've been in worse since being here." She smiled a little. Sam's hand was warm in hers, which was saying something considering the warmth of the day and the warmth of herself. She didn't exactly run cool.
Betsy turned so that her skirt flipped around a little. "Not much does." She managed to not sound smug, but only barely. "I might get it a lot, but it means much more coming from you."
She liked Sam. She liked Sam in a way that she hadn't 'liked a boy' since before high school. Before she knew she was a freak and had been cast out by her peers. She'd stayed very guarded for the rest of her life, relying on Brian perhaps a little too much for companionship.
But Sam understood. Sam changed, too. Sam would never make fun of her because she was an elephant. It totally didn't hurt that he was hot, either.
"If there's danger here, I hope it doesn't rear up any time soon." It was nice to pretend to be a real person for a little while.
