A freaking MILE? Emma thought. She thought they'd only have to go like twenty feet and it would work.
She sighed, nodded, and pushed her way into the water. At least it was, as Kai had discovered, the perfect temperature.
And it was flowing at a reasonably sedate pace, which helped, too. A raging river would have been a bear to struggle with, let alone against.
Finally, after what felt like ages of monotonous but pleasantly warm toil, Emma decided they'd gone a mile or so - distances felt a little fuzzy here, like someone had made a measuring stick out of gum or something and was stretching it ever-so-slightly. She turned and scrambled out of the river, up the soft, gentle bank, and stopped at the top.
Emma looked ahead, then looked back, then looked ahead again. Yep. It was definitely autumn on this side and summer on the other.
"This place has some subtle flaws to it. Have you noticed?" Emma murmured to Kai.
