Dinner Date (Lois)
Clark had to wonder if the aliens weren't lulling them into a sense of false security. After two relatively dangerous worlds, they'd had the fairly safe university town-though there were dangers going on elsewhere in that world. And now they were in Santa's village. It made him miss his ma and pa quite a bit. Christmas at the Kent farm had always been a humble but warm affair. And for all the trappings in this place, it wasn't quite home.

However, Lois was here. That brightened up the place a bit. And they had a kitchen. Sure, there were restaurants as well, but Clark liked preparing his meal with his own two hands. That was definitely something that ma and pa had inspired in him-everything tasted better when you knew where it came from.

So he'd made sure that the kitchen had everything they needed for a nice goose, complete with wild rice, steamed vegetables, and a chocolate mousse for dessert. And then he'd invited Lois over. They'd managed to sneak in a few dates in the last place, but this seemed special somehow. He whistled to himself as he started to prepare things and waited for Lois to arrive. They'd agreed to cook together, and Clark was perfectly okay with that. You could tell a lot about a relationship by how two people worked together in a kitchen, after all.

It was snowing!

Not those large sheets of blizzard-type flakes, but the smaller, more enjoyable bits of frost. She had always loved the snow, it was at its most beautiful in the morning after the fall when it blanketed the Earth undisturbed by nature. Winter was her favorite season, by far. Autumn brought beautiful leaves and the tourists, but there was just something about the snow and the cold that made her feel warm and cozy inside.

That feeling was escalated by the Christmas town they'd ended up in. 'Tis the season, so they said. Lois was all about participating. It wasn't that she cared too much for Christmas, mostly she left that to people that flooded the shopping malls and strip malls to haggle over last minute, overpriced merchandise. No, she liked the family part. The Holidays enstilled that sense of family in her, though she didn't really know exactly why. Putting up her Christmas tree in her apartment had always brought some measure of satisfaction, even if she was the only one that would look at it.

But this time it had been done for her. The cabin where she'd awoken had been festive and merry. She hated to leave the warmth, in spite of being unsure about the security, but she did. She had agreed to meet with Clark for dinner. Another thing to be excited about.

Only when Lois reached the door to Clark's cabin did she pause. She knocked, her fingers clad in a pair of matching mittens. She was cozy in a jacket that had faux fur around the hood, a eggplant colored knitted hat and scarf, and comfortable black boots.

Out of consideration, Lois began to stomp lightly at the welcome mat to get all of the snow from her boots that she could before Clark could welcome her inside.

Clark's features relaxed into a grin as he opened the door to Lois, her cheeks pleasantly pink from the cold and snowflakes clinging to her brown hair. She was Christmas cheer given life. He pulled her inside with a warm hug. Their relationship was still new, and there was a thrill at being able to hug her and kiss her when he wanted.

"Merry Christmas, Lois."

It might not be the exact day, but it was close enough. He tried not to think about whether they'd be preparing for a Christmas without him back home. He hoped not. He really hoped that somehow, his parents didn't realize he was gone. Or something.

"I hope you're hungry. I've got enough food to feed an army."

Finding her wrapped in warm, strong arms, Lois sighed dreamily to herself. They hadn't been moving very quickly, herself and Clark, but it was still so perfect. Behind her the chill captured her jacket and fluttered it, so she curled closer to Clark as they lingered another moment in the doorway.

She stepped back and smiled, a grin as warm as his hug had been, and then broke free of his grasp. "I'm starving!" She exclaimed, laughing softly. A step to the side and she welcomed herself in to his cabin, already shedding her warm clothes for the layers beneath.

Her mittens went into her jacket pocket. She unwound the scarf, and removed the knitted hat. Those went over the back of a chair. Next, she was out of her coat, which she also carefully draped on the back of the chair.

She took a moment to smooth out her charcoal gray, cowl-necked sweater dress. Leggings of a deeper gray covered her legs. Respectfully, Lois pulled off her boots to reveal warm socks, and set the shoes by the door to avoid tracking snow or dirt in to Clark's cabin.

When she was finished, Lois beamed radiantly at Clark and reached for his hand, "After you!"

That radiant grin got him every time. Lois wasn't always a smiley type, but when she did... it felt like the sun shining on his face. He nodded and led the way to the kitchen.

"There's still some prep work to do, but I got the bird in the oven already. Do you like scalloped potatoes? Otherwise, we could always mash them or bake them."

There were a lot of preferences that he'd already memorized when it came to Lois-how she took her coffee, what sort of donuts she preferred in the morning, just how long after having said coffee and donut one should wait before trying to engage her in conversation, and so on. But there was still a lot to learn. This was the fun period in a relationship, he thought. It was the time when you started to memorize all the little details that made up who a person was. And Lois...well, Lois was complicated and he had a feeling that he'd be learning her details for years to come, should she keep him around that long.

He set out the potatoes and smiled over at Lois. "Just tell me how you want them made, and I can peel them or not peel them while you start on the rice, if that's all right?"

Lois was not the type of person to start something without the intent of seeing it through to the bitter end. It helped when she was chasing leads, especially when they were dangerous, and the instinct hadn't failed her yet. She also wasn't the type to string something along. Not that Clark was a task, she was actually glad they had reached this point. It was refreshing and a little bit scary but she knew in her heart that it was right.

Following Clark into the kitchen, Lois inhaled all of the different aromas that greeted her. "Mm, it smells yummy in here. I can't wait until it's all done."

Assigned the task before her, rice preparation, Lois nodded. "Oh, potatoes are good any way that you make them. Scalloped is fine!" A nod, and Lois set to her task of preparing the rice. She found a pot just the right size, filled it with just enough water and set the grains to simmer on the stove.

Clark started to whistle the tune to 'jingle bells' as they both fell into the rhythm of working together on the meal.

"So what do you usually do around the holidays, Lois?" he asked to her as he peeled potatoes at super speed. It was one of the less pleasant tasks one could do in the kitchen, which meant that he usually tended to cheat when it came to potatoes. It was just a relief to be able to use his abilities in front of Lois without having to hide behind a cape and suit. She knew him now-the real him, and she seemed to get both sides of him and why they were important.

He knew a little about her family, but she didn't always seem willing to talk about them. He got the feeling that she loved her dad and younger sister very much but had a more complex relationship than maybe he did with his adoptive parents.
