Characters: Dorcas Meadowes and Remus Lupin
Setting: Thursday, September 1 | Evening | Library
Content: Work Safe
Summary: Remus lurks in the library for hours on end and perhaps takes a break when Dorcas stops by for a chat.
Status: In Progress

It was completely normal for Remus to be found in the library at odd hours of the evening.  Normally it was because he started reading and simply couldn't stop. Tonight was a completely different story. Slughorn had dumped a rather significant amount of homework in his lap, including the fact he was trying to nail down Felix Felicis as a small challenge and something he wanted to surprise the others with. On top of that there was Transfiguration and Charms, meaning Remus had been bent over the desk writing, taking notes and working on essays since just after dinner.

Another perk of being a prefect was no one really bothered him if he wandered into the restricted section without a note from a teacher. After all he was Remus Lupin, trust-worthy, responsible and mature one who the staff could depend on. Not that he didn't feel mildly bad, but no one would be the wiser. Beside, he was too smart to get caught.

He closed the Charms book with a soft thud and stretched, his back popping a few times as he cranked his neck from side to side. It was dark outside the window as he rolled up his parchment and flicked through the pages of the Advanced Potions book. It was his biggest weakness when it came to academics, for some reason he couldn't explain. He blamed it on a mental block.

The library was nearly silent, other than some whispers here and there and the scratching of quills on paper. He looked around for a moment, wondering if anyone was down here so late. He knew his mates were probably up in the Common Room or wandering the halls, but there had to be another Gryffindor down here. He couldn't be the only one studying, could he?

Dorcas had wandered into the library shortly after dinner, convincing herself that she would complete the homework that had somehow piled up over the last week.

After a few hours of work she glanced down at her Ancient Runes essay and realized she had done almost next to nothing. On any other day, Dorcas would have completed her essay and already be half way through her next task. She sighed heavily, a little annoyed with herself, and glanced out the window to see if the night had anything more interesting to offer her than the words that were written on her parchment.

She leaned back in her seat and considered if she should just give up already and head back to the Gryffindor common room. After a moment's thought she decided against it when she thought of all the chatter and noise that would be going on up there. Sometimes she needed the silence, it made her think more clearly.

She searched around the library hoping she would sight a familiar face. She thought if she had a quiet and peaceful conversation with someone she might be able to concentrate more on her essay afterward and maybe finish it before the night came to an end.

She felt a smile tug at her lips as she spotted the boy. Like her, he looked as if he was having trouble concentrating. It didn't even take her a moment to think about it. Dorcas had always admired Remus, he was always kind to her and she enjoyed their conversations that always seemed to end a little too quickly. She gathered her things silently and walked over to his table across the room.

As she neared the table she was a little unsure whether to sit down or not, the last thing she wanted was to seem rude. Though when she reached the table she did exactly that, she sat across from him and placed her things neatly in front of her. She smiled gently at the Gryffindor, "Hey Silly." She said softly. "Hope you're not studying too hard."

Remus had been rubbing the bridge of his nose with both hands, his eyes closed and forehead furrowed as he tried to clear his mind. He could feel the hints of a headache coming on and that wasn't something he needed right now. When Dorcas spoke he barely jumped, at least not on the outside. Internally, he jumped out of his skin, spun around and hexed everyone in sight. He looked at the familiar blond, his face rather blank as he might caught up with itself.

"Hi Dorcas. Wha? Oh, well, you know me, always with my nose in book, right?" he gave a soft laugh, smiling up at her. "Always studying too hard, or at least trying to, just don't tell the guys."

The pretty young Gryffindor had always been nice to him, intelligent, easy to talk to and, well, nice to look at as well. When they did talk, it never really made him nervous, at least not until his friends started taunting him about fancying her and then he started realizing he might actually like her that way. But right now he wasn't even thinking about it. Her being there was giving him an odd clarity.

He noticed her things in her arms, so he wasn't sure if she was just finishing up for just arriving. Flicking from her to the empty chair and then immediately back, Remus leaned back in his chair actually feeling relaxed.

"Have a seat. You been here long or just coming?" he pointed to the chair, moving the books aside.

Her smile grew as she watched the boy speak, she had always found Remus intriguing, even the little things like the way he spoke.

She nodded, "Yes. I know, I'm a little like that myself." She laughed softly as she heard the mention of his friends. "Your secret's safe with me."

She looked down at the books that were scattered on the table. She watched his eyes move from the empty seat back to her face and smiled softly as he offered her a seat. She nodded at his invitation and put her things down on the table. She bit her bottom lip as she organized her things neatly on the table. "Well, uh. I've been her since dinner trying to get this wretched essay completed but I guess I've been a little distracted." She reached Remus face again and smirked. "Distracted to say the least."

He grinned broader when she mentioned keeping his secret between them as she settled down across from him. Rarely did he openly accept study partners, mainly because between his friends they most caused mayhem rather than study anything. Thankfully they all had brains, though he did manage to help Peter along when he needed to.

"Seems to be a bit of the distraction bug going around. Everything gets all jumbled and wonky, hard to make heads or tails of it sometimes. Guess we both deserve a little break from all of this," Remus suggested. He did work hard, but at the same time he knew when to take it easy, especially considering how long they'd both been there.

"So I don't think we've actually talked since the end of last term. How was your summer? Anything eventful?"

She nodded along as she listened to him speak. Her fellow Gryffindor had defiantly been right about all the distractions. Dorcas knew that the first couple of weeks of the semesters were a little crazy but she thought it was a little strangle how crazy the past week had actually been. She'd been bombarded with homework from all her professors and barely found time to fit everything in.

"I know. It's a little strange how crazy things have been this week." She laughed softly at his remark about things getting all wonky. "Defiantly. Things are getting a little too wonky for my liking." She looked at him as her smile reached her eyes. "You know what? I think you're right...like always." She breathed out softly and relaxed a little in her chair.

"My summer was a little, uh, dull and wonderful at the same time... If that makes sense," she rolled her eyes at herself and she hoped her cheeks hadn't grown pink for sounding like such a dork. "I mean, I spent the majority of the time reading. But I did get to spend sometime with my mother's family. Spending two weeks with Muggles was actually quite interesting... and maybe a little strange." Her eyes reached his and she smiled at him. "And how was yours?"

He smiled watching her respond to their conversation. It was nice, sitting and talking, friendly at least. Trying not to worry about the subtle subtext of their conversation (he'd have plenty of time for that later) he grinned when she admitted he was right about taking a break. "Now that's something I don't hear very often." He joked lightly.

Dorcas's summer sounded much like Remus's; dull in a delightfully welcome way. They'd never really talked much about family before. He tried to keep his eyes on her, but whenever her eyes met his it was hard to hold eye contact. Time with family, muggles even. They had more in common than he had thought from their activities in school.

"You know after our day to day life here I think quiet and and dull summers are just what we need. A relaxing break when you can do whatever you want. My summer was a lot like yours." he smiled and felt his ears flush as his eyes met hers. "It's always quiet at home with just Mum and Dad, reading a lot and seeing them and everything. Course Mum does like having me around to cook. Saw some family too, and of course James, Pete and Sirius. It was lovely, except I think Dad was ready to have me out of the house when it came time to catch the Express."

He leaned back, thinking fondly of whether or not he'd head home for the Holidays. That was something he'd have to ask the others about. Home would be nice but he'd need the distraction of his friends.

"So, what did you read? Anything interesting?"

She smiled lightly as he joked with her. She felt her body relax a little as she grew more comfortable. She loved having a conversation with pretty much anyone who was kind to her but conversations like this always seemed to soothe her. Whenever she had a conversation with Remus it was easy, she didn't stress like she sometimes did when she spoke to other people.

"Once again, you're right," she smiled. "It does get a little crazy here, even more for you considering the mischief you and your friends get into." Dorcas listened carefully as he spoke, occasionally allowing her grin to grow a little larger. She raised her eyebrows when he mentioned cooking and she giggled a little. "Wait? You, Remus Lupin cook? That is something I think I'd like to witness." She laughed lightly. She formed her original composure again only to smile slightly at the mentioned of his friends. Those four were pretty much inseparable. Dorcas admired that, she had her best friends but never had as close a bond as they did. "I'm not entirely sure if I want to know what you four got up to.." She let out a little laugh. "I think my parents felt the same way as your dad did."

She thought of all the books she got to read during her and realized they formed a pretty lengthy list, so instead of listing all of them she decided just to mention her favorites. "I did manage to get through quite a lot of Shakespeare's plays... I'm a little bit of a sucker for his works. I've fallen in love with Othello. I also checked out Les Misérables, Frankenstien, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and The Scarlet Letter. Oh! And I did re-read Peter Pan a few times... I don't know why but I really love it.. The idea of not growing up is a little more than appealing. It's a quite frightening to believe that we'll be out of school in two years."

"Life is pretty much daily insanity with those three as mates," but Remus stopped suddenly and blushed. His 'gift' for cooking, as his mother so lovingly called it was, wasn't exactly something he went around sharing. In fact he rarely mentioned it around the Marauders. "Well, er...I usually only cook at home, for Mum and Dad mostly. Gives Mum a break from the daily routine. Plus she says I'm better at it than she is."

"Well, it's top secret, actually. The whole secret agent, if-I-tell-you-I-have-to-kill you sort," Remus smirked. "Basically we got into a fair bit of trouble across the board...nothing major but I doubt James will be visiting the Lupin house next summer."

The mention of their parents glad to have them out of the house gave him a small pang of guilty. He frequently felt like his parents were glad to have him gone because it meant they didn't have to deal with his transformations anymore, but that was hardly public knowledge.

Her list she rattled off was impressive, even to someone like him who had been nicking books from his Dad's library since he was 7. "Between you and me, I think Shakespeare's wonderful. I liked The Tempest best myself. Under rated, but Othello is brilliant as well." he chuckled a bit, not in a mean way when she mentioned Peter Pan. "Sorry, when I was a kid I loved that book, read it until the binding fell apart. Wonderful concept...a child who never has to grow up.."

He paused for a moment, thinking of the fact that in two years things would be changing a lot. His forehead furrowed at the thought of not seeing James, Sirius and Peter everyday. It was a mystery as to what they actually would end up doing with their lives.

"What do you want to do when you're done?" he asked very off handed, his forehead smoothing out, trying to focus on a happier future.

"That's what I thought." Dorcas saw him blush and she smiled a little, she had plenty of time to think about how adorable he was later but at that moment the thought didn't even slip into her mind. "Well, appearances can be deceiving," she smiled. "I'd never thought of you as a cook."

She rolled her eyes playfully. Of course everything to four of them got up to was top secret. She didn't hold it against them and she wasn't too sure she wanted to know anyway, especially considering Sirius' favorite extracurricular activities. "That's not surprising.. James seems to have a knack for wearing out his welcome."

She grinned as he mentioned his liking for Shakespeare. "I'd have to agree with you there.. The Tempest is brilliant despite it being underrated." She blushed when he laughed at her and she shook her head playfully. "Hey! I don't care what anyone thinks, you're never too old to read Peter Pan."

Dorcas noticed his change in expression and felt a little guilty for bringing up life after Hogwarts. "Hey, I'm sorry, for bringing it up... I'm a bit of a worrier when it comes to silly things like that. I'm sure it'll be exactly like it is now but we'll be much more wiser, we'll be able to use magic whenever we want and hey? We won't have parents monitoring our every move." She smiled hopefully at him.

Her eyes fell down to look at her hands as she hesitated to answer Remus' question. Whenever she told anyone that she wanted to be an Auror they always laughed at her, they thought she didn't have it in her and Dorcas knew that. She knew she wasn't, well for lack of better words, a bad ass but she hoped maybe she could be. "Uh, I want to be like my dad," she smile slightly when she mentioned her father. Dorcas' father, Victor, was probably her favorite person. "He's an Auror. My mother thinks I don't have what it takes... she thinks I'm too soft. I don't know.. maybe I am but I'd like to think I could be brave enough..." She shook her head and sighed slightly before reaching his eyes again. "What about you?"

"You think cooking and potion making would be pretty much the same, but I think I've got a mental block for the whole potion making thing," Remus replied, trying to brush off the embarrassed feeling. "Mum likes all the boys well enough, just not when we're wrecking unsaid havoc on the house. And I never said liking Peter Pan was a bad thing. You're right, you're never too old."

The top shift to their futures outside Hogwarts may have brought down Remus's rather happy mood, but he brushed it off. "No worries, I worry too. It's just a little intimidating at the moment." He stopped there, but listened intently. She wanted to be an Auror, and he frowned when she said her Mum told her she didn't have what it took.

"You are brave enough, Dor, really. And I wouldn't take being soft as an insult. You'd probably need to develop a bit of a thicker skin, but I reckon most people who enter the program do. I think it's admirable. You've certainly got the brains and courage." he smiled at her, but faltered a bit when she asked him the same question.

"Well, I think I want to teach...here if I can," he said, avoiding her eyes. It seemed stupid. His friends, well, James and Sirius, wanted to be brave and have interesting careers. He wanted to stay here and teach. "I like working with the students, especially as a prefect. It's weird to think of me doing something like that but, I dunno, it'd be nice to be able to stay here forever."

He glanced around the library for a moment of two. Someday he's have to move on, but for a short time it'd be nice to stay inside the comforting walls.

"'Suppose. I know what you mean, I'm not sure how anyone could have a knack for potions. I really ought to pick up my act in that class.. Everything about that subject gives me a mental block... I think I might get Lily to help me out a bit." She laughed a little. "Well, when aren't you guys wrecking havoc?" She asked playfully.

"Yeah I know what you mean. I can't even think whats its going to be like not coming here, its been our home for so long." Dorcas thought of Hogwarts as her home and loved it as much, maybe even more, as the home she shared with her family.

Her breath hitched a little when she listened to the things he had to say about her. It was probably the best thing she'd heard all day, maybe even all week. She was touched by his words and no one, apart from her father, had ever said that about her ambitions. "Really? That means a lot to me... more than you'll ever know." She smiled up at him, not caring that her eyes were probably sparkling a little too much.

She frowned slightly as he avoided her eyes, she feared he was a little embarrassed. She honestly believed that Remus would make an amazing teacher and she hated that he thought it was a weird idea. She tried to catch his eye, "You'd be brilliant, I think you'd be an amazing teacher." She said sincerely. "And I mean it."

"During the summer? We turn into a literal constant stream of destruction and mayhem, and I wish that was an understatement. And I don't even see the boys everyday," Remus ran his hands through his hair, smiling as he looked back at the summer. He didn't know he could survive an entire summer with his mates, he was exhausted after just a few days.

"It'll be a change, to say the least," he commented about not coming back. It was true that Hogwarts was just as much a home as his house had been, but it was also the one place that had wanted him outside his home. Dumbledore had come to bring him to Hogwarts personally. It was so much more than people realized. "Suppose we can always come back and visit Quidditch game, eh?"

He blushed when he noticed her eyes shining at what he said. The blush deepened when she complimented him, and he scratched at the back of his neck nervously. When looked back up at her, he did manage a small smile.

"Thanks, really," he breathed. "Maybe we both just need to be more confident in ourselves?"

Confidence, bloody hell he wishes he could take lessons on that.

Dorcas watched Remus attentively as he smiled and ran his fingers through his hair. Dor was finding it a little too challenging for her liking, to ignore her thoughts concerning his adorableness and the butterflies that were having a party in her stomach. She was unintentionally fiddling with the quill that sat in front of her when she realized she'd probably taken a little too long to respond.

She smiled and pushed a piece of hair behind her ears as she responded. "The day you four are together all summer is the day I fear for society." She teased.

She leaned back in her chair as glanced around the library to notice that the number of students were decreasing. She began to wonder what the time was, only to recognize that she didn't really care.

She raised her eyebrow at the thought and nodded in agreement. He was right, they could always come back to check out a few Quidditch games. She smiled at the possibility, despite Dorcas not being active in the sport she generally loved when there were games on. She was highly anticipating Gryffindor's first match. "Now that's an idea. I'm actually quite excited for Qudditich to start, I missed watching the matches over summer."

She bit her lip softly and smiled as she watched him blush. When he managed to smile back at her, her smile only grew.

"You're welcome." She said softly. Dorcas nodded slowly as she listened his assessment on their confidence. It wasn't like she had trouble talking to people, that she was fine with. It was only when she doubted herself she wished for Lily's or Kira's confidence. "If only it were easy."

He loved listening, especially when someone like Dorcas was so easy to talk to. Nodding here and there he smiled at the idea of going to the first match. Remus was rubbish on a broom, but he enjoyed watching the games, mostly so he and Peter could scream their lungs out as their friends fought to passionately.

"I can't wait to see how the team will be this year," he replied with a smile. "You think it'll be a close race this year? I really hope we take the cup, especially for Alice's sake, being a 7th year and all."

Briefly he had noticed the library emptying out, and when he glanced at his watch he noticed it was nearly midnight. For a moment he froze, looking at their things scattered about the table and thinking of the lovely conversation. Being a prefect made it okay to be out a bit after curfew, but if it got much later he wasn't sure they wouldn't get in trouble.

"Bloody hell, it's getting late," he voiced aloud. "Erm, you want to keep talking on the way to the common room? Maybe even continue up there?" He didn't want her to be freaked out by the abrupt change in pace, but Remus was Remus after all and he didn't want to get into trouble for being wandering around too late. That would just be stupid.
