It had ended just like it had begun. He had suddenly found himself back in his own cottage. The transition was such that it took Regulus a long time to believe that he wasn't locked in the room any longer. His second instinct was to try and find out if Victoire was okay, but he couldn't bring himself to stir from the bed. He had tried so hard to protect her and he knew that, in the end, it had counted for absolutely nothing. He knew all too keenly that he hadn't been able to help either of them.
So, he remained in his bed, and tried to block everything out. He hadn't dared open his journal and he hadn't dared try to venture outside of his cottage. He had tried to eat at one point, but hadn't been able to keep anything down, so he gave up on that. He wanted so badly to pretend that everything was okay. But he had never dealt well with his own weaknesses. And it seemed not to matter how long he was here, he was still afraid of how he had died. He thought that he could push it to the back of his mind, but when he was turned into a zombie or when he came face to face with an Inferi, all those memories came rushing back.
He felt like he couldn't breathe all over again. He felt hollowed out.
He had known that, eventually someone would come. And so the knock on the door came as little surprise. He hesitated for a long time, pulled back and forth between whether he wanted to see anybody. But he needed to pretend that everything was fine -- perhaps more so because it wasn't. So he got up, went downstairs, and opened the door.
