Alphard heard Remus's words and the stubborn pride he always carried simply refused to believe that there couldn't be some accord between Sirius and the rest of his family. Alphard himself refused the idea of having to choose. He adored Sirius--he adored all of his nieces and nephews in equal measures--and he adored his sister, his cousins, his brother! No one was asking him to choose between them, he knew, but he felt that it would be nigh on impossible to maintain a working relationship between the lot of them. But, as he stood there before Remus, Alphard thought that may be exactly what he had to do..
Maybe he had to stay the mediator between them.. the link between Sirius and what should have been home. He didn't want to believe Sirius could be so selfish.. he couldn't give up on him. He wouldn't. But, he wouldn't give up on his sister or his cousin, either. Maybe it wasn't his business to resolve the issues of his cousin, his sister, and their children.. but he couldn't stand by and very well do nothing
"I understand," he said shortly and exhaled a controlled breath, "if nothing else.. Mr. Lupin, if you could at least encourage Sirius to maintain some sense of civility on the chance encounters with my sister, I'd be most appreciative. I doubt Sirius enjoys upsetting a seventeen year old girl.. but if that's the case.." Alphard trailed off and canted his head a fraction. "They're good people. All of them."
