Scorpius' laughter made him smile, even though he had tried really hard to look cross with the other man for laughing. It was funny. He couldn't lie. However, the moment he stopped, James sobered a little himself.
"Oh." James' voice was quiet. "Well, you had your daughter there," he said after a moment. "I'm sorry not everyone was there."
Sighing softly, he focused on Scorpius' face briefly. "It was a man's hand," he said quietly. "I still am not really sure who it was, but that's all I can really offer you about that. I was sick and I was having trouble breathing and they couldn't make me better, but someone was with me, and even though I was really scared, it made it less scary."
He shrugged. "Since you were so pokey about it, I thought I'd just tell you more."
