"Isolation to the point that it affects the stages of development. There is a classic case study of a girl named Anna, she's a muggle, of course, but I doubt being a wizard would mean much in these circumstances. An illegitimate child she was kept on the second floor in an attic-like room. Anna was alone nearly all of the time, seldom moved, touched or talked to and rarely bathed. She was fed almost nothing but cow's milk. When at last found and removed from the home, she could not walk, talk, or do anything that showed intelligence. By age twelve she had the intelligence of a 2 year old. Her mind irreversibly damaged as a result of her inhumane conditions. She was treated like an animal and thus became one. It really makes you wonder, I feel, about how important socialization truly is to our ways of life--to who we are. For example, Merlin, if you were born in India you would have a different system of beliefs, different language, different skin--but you would still be you, wouldn't you? Or would you be someone else entirely?"
