Who Luna & Draco
What Luna comes home from work early, warned that the child she is taking care of got into his cold medication when no one else was looking...
When February 2nd
Where Luna and Draco's cottage
Rating/Status Low // Complete

I told you about strawberry fields,
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here's another place you can go
Where everthing flows.
Looking through the bent backed tulips
To see how the other half lives
Looking through a glass onion.

"How did you do that?" Draco stared at Luna, incredibly impressed that she had somehow managed to unlock the door that he had just locked. When Severus had told him that he was sending a message to Lovegood to come home and make sure he was all right, he'd wanted to keep her out of the room.

He refused to think that he'd done anything wrong. He'd felt sick, and so he'd taken a bit more of the potion than he perhaps should have--but it was only in an attempt to feel better and now he did!

There was evidence in the room, still, of Harry's visit. In fact, the only reason that he probably hadn't poisoned himself dangerously with potions was because his stomach was still mostly filled with milk from the ice cream, which really mellowed out the intensity of the potions.

He moved away from the door to go and sit on the end of his bed. He sniffed and scratched his knee before folding his thin arms over his chest. Draco's grey eyes did seem a little glazed over, but was was really telling was how little he currently cared about his appearance. His hair was a mess, greasy, and he was wearing nothing but an undershirt and blue briefs.

Luna gave him a puzzled look as she tucked away her wand. "Alohamora. You really are out of it." She looked over the room quizzically, taking in the abandoned bowls and especially the empty medicine bottles. She sighed, moving over to the closet to rummage inside. "I thought I told you to stay out of the chest," she told him. "You weren't due for another dose until after I came home from work."

She pulled out a robe and tucked it around his shoulders before taking his arm and steering him towards the bathroom. "Professor
Snape said you have to throw up. The easiest way is to stick your finger down your throat and gag yourself."

"I really don't have much of a gag reflex..." Draco murmured. He didn't like the idea of getting sick, even if he'd been doing a lot of it since he'd arrived in Lockewood. "Can't you please not make me? I'm fine."

Draco hugged the robe a bit tighter around his shoulders, against the cold.

"You are not fine," Luna corrected, still steering him in toward the bathroom. "Potions are made so they're not very harmful if you take a little extra, but four times the amount isn't 'a little extra.'" She reached the bathroom and made him sit in front of it.

"This will be more pleasant if you can make yourself do it," she warned him. "But I'll go prepare something. And don't bother locking the door."

She disappeared from the bathroom, heading over to her own to root through her medicine cabinet and the basic first aid supplies.

Draco moved to sit on the floor, his foot on either side of The Porcelain. He leaned his back against the bathtub and sighed, wrapping an arm around his stomach.

He didn't know why he was kept doing this to himself. He didn't know why he kept stopping himself. He didn't know why he was getting so hung up on things or worrying so much about what other people thought. He wasn't like this at home. He didn't even speak to Harry. He didn't know why it was all suddenly...so important, or why he couldn't cope with it.

"Luna! Please come back! Don't leave me alone!"

Merlin, how had he ever handled his first year at Hogwarts? Sure, this was a little more stressful, but still. He was twenty-one, didn't he have any common sense? Luna sighed, and found the bottle she needed. She didn't have a spoon, so he'd just have to use the cap.

She headed back to the bathroom, and sighed. "Draco, you're such a child," she told him, and she opened up the bottle, pouring a dose into the cap. She handed it over to him. "Swallow, and don't move. It only take a few minutes to work."

he took the cap and sipped it back, pursing his lips at the bitterness of it and then tossing the cap carelessly to the floor. He leaned and put his arm on the side of the bathtub, sliding slightly away from the toilet, but not going too far. He was still listening to her.

"If you throw up in the bathtub, Draco, you're cleaning it up," she warned him, taking a seat on the edge of the tub. She sighed, and reached out to put a hand on his head, combing back his hair in a comforting gesture, similar to the way she'd pet an animal. "Why did you take all of the medicine? I know you were told not to."

Draco slid slightly, to place his forehead against her knee. He closed his eyes. It was nice having her there. Malfoy was, unremarkably, dependent to a fault.

He could be on his own, but he had to feel like he had made the choice to be. When someone walked out on him, when someone left him he practically became a child, abandoned or lost, breaking down to tears for his mother's attention.

Harry had left him and he'd drank himself to the point of blacking out and remembering nothing of the night or who he'd spent it with. Alone in the home, he'd gotten into the medication--with the conscious thought to tell Severus that he'd done it. It was almost calculated.

"I don't know, Luna..."

"Yes you do," she told him, her voice uncharacteristically stern. "You're not stupid, Draco. You're just acting it. And I need to know why... if you're depressed, if you're suicidal, if you're that desperate for attention. What is it?"

Her voice softened again, back to its usual timbre and she continued to stroke his hair. "If you throw up on my leg, you're really going to be in trouble," she told him with a slight smile.

"I won't..." He touched her leg, running his fingers from her knee down towards her foot, but his hand faltered at her ankle and he pushed away from her to hug the toilet instead, coughing and sputtering, sick for the third time in the last two weeks. This was a new experience for him, as normally he took such good care of himself. Even the drinking he was much less public about.

But then, he could blame the fact he was now working at a pub.

She stayed where he was as he pushed away and began emptying his stomach. A thought struck her and she got to her feet, wandering out for a few moments before she returned holding a candle and some matches. She lit the candle and set it on the counter before taking a seat on the edge of the tub again.

As his heaving stopped, she stood again and got him a glass of water to rinse his mouth. "How long ago did you take the potions?" she asked.

He rinsed his mouth and spat into the toilet once before drinking more of his water. "Not that long ago, I took--I took a bit too much before Harry got here but then I just...I just finished all of what was left, I mean--I mean..."

He sniffed. He didn't know what he meant but, as he'd found out when Harry had visited, he could lie again. Draco inched closer to Luna again, pursing his lips and looking quite pathetic. He was still sick, his body still weak, and now his spirit seemed to be following suit. "Luna, I hate it here. I hate this place and what it is doing to me."

"We'd still better not give you any more tonight," she decided. "You'll have to make do with menthol." She looked down at Draco where he sat on the floor near her legs, peering up at her. "You look like a puppy right now. Forlorn and worried that I'm going to toss you out because you've done something bad."

She got to her feet and offered him a hand. "Let's get you back to bed."

"Can't we just sit here, a little bit longer?" Draco didn't trust himself to stand. He felt very much like the puppy that Luna had described. "Please?"

He wanted to talk to her, because he needed to talk to someone and he was started to realise that Snape wasn't going to hear him--or put up with him and really he shouldn't have to.

Luna paused, then sat back down. "You'd be more comfortable in bed," she pointed out. "I could sit in there with you." She ought to get back to work, but she really couldn't leave him alone till she figured out what was wrong. Besides, she'd told them she wasn't sure how long this would take.

"You shouldn't let Rita Skeeter get to you so much," she told him. He'd said it was this place, but since the woman was in charge of this place, she'd hold her responsible. "Everything can't be that bad."

Draco reached up and took Luna's hand.

"It isn't Skeeter's fault. Well, she brought me here, and so I suppose it is, but it isn't her. It's...Everything else." He didn't want to name Harry, he couldn't bring himself to. That just seemed like a bad idea. "It's everything that is expected of me and everything that isn't. I--I had a plan at home, I had a life and I knew where I was headed and the rug was ripped out from beneath me and now I'm faced with--"

With Colin Creevey, for starters, but he couldn't tell Luna about that, or he would never be going home.

She clasped his hand in return, smiling slightly. "We all feel like that, Draco. This isn't where I planned to be. There are people who know me in the future and expect me to be the same, even if I hadn't reached it yet. Perhaps it's not as extreme as your case, but I think everyone can relate, at least a little."

She sighed, squeezing his hand slightly. "Could you talk to me before you do something like this, though? I don't think you're really suicidal. Depressed and wanting help... But I can help more if you talk to me before you do something silly."

"I can try to. I'm just--it's almost like I don't realise what I'm doing, like when I--the other night, before I got sick, when I drank as much as I did, I just--"

He sighed, "I just thought Harry would come back and he didn't."

Draco wrapped his free arm around the side of the tub and using it, while still clutching Luna's hand, he got to his feet. He smiled at her. "I'm always so dependent on other people, Luna, but I'm a very poor judge of who it is I should be dependent...on."

She was a little relieved that he decided to leave the bathroom; it was chilly on the tile, and he might have had a robe, but she didn't. Luna took his arm in case he was still feeling woozy and escorted him back to his bedroom.

She took a seat at the end of the bed as he made himself comfortable, harkening back to their discussion. "If I tell you who the right people are, then you're still not deciding for yourself, and that might be just as bad as choosing the wrong people yourself. So I don't know if I should tell you that you can depend on me, or not... But you can."

"Since I've arrived here, Luna, you've been more of a blessing to me than anyone." He slipped the robe from his shoulders and climbed back into his bed, pulling the blankets up to his chin. "You've fixed my nose, you've taught me that no everyone's opinion of me remains so unchanged--you left work to see me vomit into a toilet. I can't think of many other people who would do anything like that for me. You're...you're a friend, Luna, I know that. But--really, I'm not that well versed in having friends."

"It's a learning process," Luna said simply. She hadn't really had much experience with friends in the early years of her life; her parents had never stressed "getting along with others" as a needed skill set. She probably wasn't the best person for advice on that front. She tucked him in, then leaned over to press a kiss to the top of his head, as though he were a small child in her care. "I have to go back to work. Promise you won't break into the medicine cabinet, all right?"

"I'll be all right." He promised. He was tired now anyway, and he didn't want Luna to end up in trouble because of him.

He settled down in the bed after offering Luna one more half-smile. "Thank you for coming to take care of me--I do appreciate it and--and could you please not...tell anyone else about this? Is that all right?"

Luna laughed, flashing him a smile. "It's a little late to worry about your dignity, isn't it?" She got to her feet, still smiling at him. "Don't worry, I won't. Though I'll have to update Professor Snape and tell him you're not going to die. Everyone else can be kept in the dark."

She paused at the doorway. "I'll check in when I come home. Take care." She headed downstairs and back out to her job.
