How wrong he had been to think that keeping a secret would be simple. Keeping a secret turned into constructing lies to maintain that secret, and it had gone past the point of fraying the edges of Percy's conscience. He simply couldn't live a life where his partner was pretending to date his mother to avert the attention. That was taking it to an extreme he never thought they would reach. And now that his daughter knew, it was only a matter of time before the whole of Lockewood found out.
Percy sometimes took after his mother in the regard that, when he wanted to be distracted from his own thoughts, he could spend hours in the kitchen cooking and baking. He really did hope that, regardless of whether Lucy wanted to speak about his relationship with Oliver, she would come home for dinner.
Looking at the spread on the table, he estimated six or seven people could be well-fed. Percy had made corn on the cob, meat-filled pasties, butternut squash soup, mashed potatoes, and for dessert, an apple pie was cooling on the window sill. It was a miniature feast for two people.
Sitting down, Percy knit his hands together and waited, eye on the clock.
